Default Transformer Animated: Leader Class Ultra Magnus Review

First, I’m writing this review for the benefit of those who have doubts as to decide if they should buy Animated Ultra Magnus when it’s out either in (cheaper) loose form or retail. Although my recommendation is relatively simple (GRAB HIM!), this relatively picture intensive review should provide more insight to this great piece of engineering. I apologise for the lack of video as I don’t have a video cam. Ok enough talking, now let’s transform and roll out!

Vehicle Mode

Ultra Magnus is, simply put, very cartoon accurate. I will let the pictures do the talking.

Overview

As you can see from the pictures, the vehicle mode is stunning. There’s no Autobot in sight, which is a mystery. My only explanation is that, as the Commander of Elite Guard, and their suppose “need to disguise” from humans, they forego the symbol. (Just my own theory.) Now to the vehicle attack mode.

Vehicle Attack Mode

I doubt this attack mode has been seen in the episodes so far, but it sure is cool. The amount of arsenal present in Ultra Magnus is nothing short of impressive.

Overview

Let’s go to the all so impressive robot mode.

Ultra Magnus Transformed

Elite Guard Commander Ultra Magnus is amazing! He looks just like the cartoon version, and is very accurate. Like Bumblebee said – “Now I know why they call you ULTRA Magnus”, cause he’s simply ULTRA. Love him to bits.

Transformation Difficulties

I have almost the whole cast of Animated toys so far (less Snarl, Oil Slick and Voyager Bulkhead). Ultra Magnus transformation can be a bit tricky, but not tough enough to test veteran Transformer collectors. I believe most people had trouble transforming Leader Bulkhead the first time, with the tangling arms no way to attach to the body. Magnus doesn’t have such headache transformations.

The only part I think may confuse people a bit is the legs. For that buying retail version, which comes directly in robot mode, I doubt it would be a problem. Those getting loose will mostly get it in vehicle mode. To reverse the instructions can be a bit confusing, but it may just be me. Still, the transformation is whole lot of fun, challenging enough but won’t put off most.

Ultra Magnus Attack Mode

I just have to show this mode to you all. It just shows how bad ass Autobots can be. Ultra Magnus can literally blast every Decepticons into orbit with this mode (although we know he still get pawn in the cartoon, lol).

Absolutely kick ass mode. Just grab him guys, you won’t regret at all.

Comparison Pics

Some size comparison pictures for your reference.

With Leader Bulkhead

With Voyager Prime

With Deluxe Prowl

With Voyager Lugnut (just to show how damn small Lugnut is, give me a leader class now!!!)

Ending Comments

I’m not touching on articulation as I felt it would be better being explained through a video review. I’ll be leaving this to the real pros, like Sean Long from transformersmatrix.com and the rest to give you more in depth details about articulation.

No ratings from me, cause it will be simply bias (I will give it a 6/5 anytime). My advice is to simply grab one yourself to fully embrace Magnus’s awesomeness. It’s really about time Magnus deserve such recognition in the Transformer world, and not live under the shadows of Prime.

Final picture of the day, enjoy!

Thank you all for your time, hope this review has been helpful.

P.S: It’s my first review of a toy, so pardon me if it’s amateurish. Hehe…

Video clip time!

I decided to take this very short clip of the speech by Ultra Magnus here. Enjoy! (turn up the volume, my digi cam not strong enough to record the sound clearly)
