View Full Version : SGP comic: How creative is our local talent?

talking about creativity in mr kiasu forum, this question just pop up in my mind...How creative is our local talent? if we look at Taiwan, HK or even Msia...their artist comes up with wide range of ideas for their comic...
look back in sgp...wat has the local talent done for the local comic industry. i happen to drop by library yesterday. so i went to the local publish section and look for some local comic. wat i saw there is damm sad scenario loh... only very very little comic on the shelve. dunno is it borrow by the reader, or it is that 少德可怜! only got celestial zone, a few comic by a lady artist (forgot the name :D ) and i think 2 title publish by jack neo (drawn by unknown artist)...and the content...is so boring....nothing interesting....cannot compare to oversea at all.....soooooooo sad..........
how come the local talent cannot do something like HK & taiwan...or at least close to malaysia....they ....at least hv comic king, gempak...all these magazine to feature their local comic.....at leaxzt they are more recognize in their own martket.....wat happen here????  is it becoz of the market cannot accept it? or too many rules limit their creativity???
some one out there???? any idea??? :?: :?: :?:

I agree with that. Cant really figure out what's the problem too. Pardon me, but I hate to see those Jack Neo comics that supplements or ride the wave on the popularity of the movies. Does this mean the artists can only draw and work like machines? To me its totally no creativity for those comics. [-X

Maybe our economy does not concentrate on work related to creativity, so artists find it hard to survive, finally becoming a 没饭吃 or 做不下去 kind of job. Even they are willing to fork out the time and effort, one day they may just get tired bcos of low response.

How to improve te situation, I have no idea also :|

没饭吃 or 做不下去 is the key reasons. The worst is that Spore don't have a comics culture, ppl are not willing to fork out $$ to buy.

Frankly chances are really slim to succeed in Spore unfortunately, but don't lost your entheusium :|

You know him? I was quite impressed by his effort, he did a Police Story based on SG also, and the art is very HK like. I think he owns a comic shop in the past and used a small office in the shop to draw.

I saw a report about him before if I remember correctly. He actually went to HK to look for Ma Sir and want to learn from him (depressed with SG situation??). But Ma Sir told him that he wont take him in and suggest that he go back to SG and fight his way, just like all of them in HK. He was motivaed and came back to start. Way to go! =D>

胜福 is now working in Shanghai, China.
Working for 画一publisher, working as their creative director.
Mainly dealing with translating traditional text to simplified text of HK comic that 画一get license. And also converting the color to b/w.

U can see the B/W china published HK comic. if it is pusblish by 画一, mostly are handle by 胜福 in terms of productions (for print)

Fire, for quite a while I was a member of Singapore Comics Online [SCO] and I tried and tried to get people there to tell me about published/unpublished artists. Nothing. All I got was a lot of talk about life being too busy to draw and you could not make a living from it. At one point someone wrote that I was more enthusiastic about encouraging Singaporean artists and promoting Singaporean comics than Singaporeans on the group!

I know Captain V was a long time back and the only comics I got from Singapore are on my site [http://chinesekoreancomics.4t.com] though I'm unsure whether these are FROM Singaporean artists or not.

It is VERY easy to plan how to set up and establish a comics industry. Singapore is a rich country and it could -could- easily establish its own booming comic market like Hong Kong -even export them.

But,and it is a major "but",you need artists who can keep to deadlines and draw, for deadlines,at least twenty pages per week IF they want to establish themselves as comic book artists. On SCO most doubted they could do a page per week for various reasons.

You need a publisher or someone with money to look at comic projects and publish them. Wong Yuk-Long [Tony Wong] is working on Batman Hong Kong for DC Comics -like Marvel,DC hops around the world looking for the next "new" style or country to exploit and give their comics a "daring new look". I think Wong does up to 30 pages a week,or did, when he had deadlines.

Singapore CAN do it but someone has to get off their butt to get things started!

If I can help by advising just ask.

of course u are most welcome to help....terry , u draw too? :)
i totally agree with you....ppl here dare not step out to venture into comics industry...coz they think they will die hunger....hahahaha
but i do know a few artists who are currently fulltime artists and they are doing quiet well...of course they dont rely totally on local market to support them....
is this SCO still active? u hv the web adress? btw, ur web adress www.chinesekoreancomics.... dont work.....can try amend it? i'm interested to look at the captain v comic :D

Amended the link.

Terry, is Singapore Comics Online still available? As Fire said, there are some fulltime artists here in SG, and they are dedicated. By depending on the local market, they probably won't be able to get the support they want. But its great to see that their works are recognised in other countries :salute:

HK's comic culture is there, and has been builit for more than 30 years, but they are also facing some detrioriating situations as the sales of comics drop. HK has one of the most commercial systems out there and really depends on these for survival. The 30-pages per week speed is really one of its kind in the world, nobody can beat it, and I think its introduced by Tony Wong :prayer:

Just my thoughts.

Terry Hooper

Hullo.
The link to my sites should work:~
http://terryhooperhomepage.4t.com
http://blacktowercguk.4t.com
http://chinesekoreancomics.4t.com

The first two feature some of my art,etc..
Singapore Comics Online I have no idea what happened to it. I tried logging in one day and it had closed down. I have the cover scans to two Captain V comics but, sadly, not the comics themselves!

The whole point of Singapore comics is to start on a small scale. If you try jumping in in a big way you could fail due to financial reasons. UK comics are basically Marvel and DC reprints and licenced toy comics. The real UK comics are the Small Pressers and Independent comic publishers with limited print runs and covering all sorts of genres.

If I find out what happened to Singapore Comics Online I'll let you know.

It is VERY easy to plan how to set up and establish a comics industry. Singapore is a rich country and it could -could- easily establish its own booming comic market like Hong Kong -even export them.

The Facts [1]
Singapore's comic industry is dead.
Mr Kiasu is not active anymore. Sheng Fu now in Shanghai. No one's doing it full-time except the illustrators at the newspapers (even then, they don't draw comics everyday)

Our Govt is simply not interested to do anything about our comics industry. No point and no future.

The Facts [2]
Singapore's animation industry is booming!
Look at the way Singapore Govt and our press is blowing our own trumpets about our growing animation industry? Even George Lucas comes to Singapore to set up shop.

and our govt is keen to pump in money to help it grow.

Animation, in a way, is like a more complex and sophiscated version of comics. they both tell stories and illustrate visuals. but animation has more commercial potential than comics.

i got a few friends working in animation firms. they are working on animation movies. although they are not supposed to talk about it, supposed to keep it low profile, they are confident the animation films will make a strong impact when released.

that's the future...

hi terry

its great to know that there's someone in the western country interested in the eastern country comic. hv you get in touch with sgp local artists lately? (i mean do you get to know the local comic published lately?) well if u are introducing these comics at your site or promoting it at UK, maybe i can ask their permission to send you some of their works or comics so that u can help us feature in your country and your website..(i think they wont mind...hahaha  ) maybe you can PM me and we'll see how we can arrange it. :salute:

Terry Hooper

Fire;that would be great! I never got any sort of response from Singaporean creators before so I couldn't really judge styles,etc..
Really, unless you can ask the Government for funds and make a point that comics paved the way for animation, that HK comics make millions of $ and the US and Europe have their own industries -that home grown comics could be a big export once established forget them. Its down to creators pushing and pushing and getting attention -how would your government's attitude change if one of it's citizens became the next big US comic star?
Really, you need a businessman who is interested and wants to get into comic publishing -never give up!

Liked Daniel's comic. It's what we'd call "Slice of Life"! Ahh,now I know those guys on Singapore Comics Online weren't kidding me -there really is a Singlish!
About my comments on Singapore establishing a comics industry. As I said, you need the talent that can just concentrate on work. Tong Wong says he used to produce 30 pages a week -I assume someone else did the colouring otherwise that is a fantastic achievement! I come across wannabe artists who cannot produce 20 pages in 7 months! They are never, ever going to get into comics. 22 pages in two weeks is okay if you are working on one project and want it to look great. However,I did 40+ pages for an Indian company about three years ago in just under two weeks:creating the characters, stories, etc.,as I went. I can,if I need to,produce 25 black and white pages a week. You really do need to be able to afford the time to do this.

I wondered,I know Chuang Yi publishes Manga in Singapore but what else do they publish?
Is Chuang Yi the only publisher in Singapore? If not what do these others publish.

Interested in knowing.
Thanks!

For HK, their way of drawing comics is very commercialised and it was established by Tony Wong back in the 70's. One team will consist of 10 - 20 people, all specialist in their own areas. There will be story teller, the main artist would be sketching out the story for the week and probably the outline or head. One person will draw hair, one weapons, one clothings, one background etc etc....so these people actually do the same things everyday.

I think colour used to be outsourced, now with the advanced technology, they are doing colour seperation using computer, which can be managed in house. Its basically a very systematic approach and one team can produce 30+ pages in a week, should be fastest in the world.

CY is the only local publisher with manga copyrights, not really alot on others. :)

i sang 一阵风 to my wife last time :D because i chase her until so jia lard...

anyway, back to topic, how creative is local talent? i think not as creative as philipines, china etc generally. my theory is that our gov is too efficient and conformity has more emphasis here than individuality. where there's no rules, creativity thrives (generally speaking). if u depend on creativity for survival, definitely u'll be creative :D
