anybody lucky enuff to bid? cheaper cars & petrol but poor economy, everything has a trade-off :D

source from CNA
SINGAPORE: The COE price for small cars, 1,600cc and below, dived by S$10,453 to a historic low of S$2 in the latest bidding exercise.

The next biggest fall was seen in the Open Category COE, which dropped S$3,601 to S$6,889. Open Category COEs are used mainly for cars.

For big cars (more than 1,600cc), the COE went down S$3,412 to S$4,889.

Meanwhile, the premium for commercial vehicles fell S$2,700 to S$6,189.

For motorcycles, the new COE price stood at S$1,012 - down S$497 from the previous bidding exercise.

The last time the COE price plunged in the small car category was in 2001 when it went down to S$101. And the COE price for big cars was a fluke S$50 in 1997.

Car dealers cited the economic downturn as a reason for the latest falls in COE prices. It resulted in Singaporeans being more cautious when buying big-ticket items like cars.

In addition, car dealers said that even if people are interested to buy cars, it is now more difficult to get loans from banks.

One car dealer even estimated that there have been about 30 per cent more rejections from banks compared to three months ago.

But with COE prices falling so dramatically to S$2, dealers are expecting more people to start buying cars.

Ron Lim, Tan Chong Motors' general manager for sales & marketing, said: "Definitely, with COE coming down to this level...we are just not talking about Category A at $2, even across the board in the other categories. I'm definitely sure that consumers will come back to the market to look at cars again. But having said that, this expected sudden influx of demand will definitely push up the COEs again."

Hours after the latest COE results were out, some were already shopping for cars.

"Got chance to bid for a new car, cheap COE, why not?" said a man.

"I'm looking around for cars for my family. If Cat A dropped a lot, maybe I might consider," said another.

"Our sales have been pretty low. But today, to my surprise, I got two orders, after the COE (bidding) closed," said a sales woman.

If you are in the market for a car, you would already be prepared to pay for the cost of the car plus parking, petrol, ERP, insurance, road tax and fines. A cheaper COE may at least lower the upfront car cost.

If you are not willing to pay for ERP, petrol, parking etc then you wouldn't even be in the market for a car anyway so a low COE makes no difference.

and if u going to sell the car think u'll faint cos COE $2 only no value at all think twice.
Your economic benefit will depend on whether you bidded for and are in possession of the $2 COE yourself, whether the dealer is willing to use your COE, how much a car dealer is willing to lower the car cost if he uses your COE, or how much a dealer prices a $2 COE car vs a $10,000 COE car etc etc.

Long and the short of it is that as with many things in life, the impact of a $2 COE is not so straightforward to assess and it may be a good or bad thing taking into account many factors.

Its a trap to lure people to buy, keep in mind that C.O.E is paid once. The hidden cost of owning car are :
1) ERP (1 & only in SG)
2) petrol
3) parking
4) insurance
5) road tax. (all above among highest in Asia)

6) maintenance (optional but unavoidable as mileage or K/M meter go up)

With the highest ever seen of about 1.2 million vehicles squeezed into this island, I fear of more come onto roads due to this S$2 bait! Owning car in SG is the most expensive compared to any corner in the world except for north pole! Dun want to see car tow away for .......:o, it getting way too common here.

Still swear by bicycle/cycling!

the thing abt having a $2 COE is that u don't have to buy a car... sell it off next month at $10k, u make tons of profit liao :D I know there're pple who religiously bid at a low price hoping to strike it one day, it's easy money if u've the time

I'd rather have no COE and cheap cars and petrol and no parking fees or ERP.

This is also from a car owner's view.

If wishes were horses then beggars would ride.

Whatever system in place today is here to stay. If you need or want a car, deal with it. And if you don't need or want a car, then so much the better for you.
