SUPERGIRL #1 GETS SECOND PRINTING
A day after Supergirl #1 and #0 both sold out within one day of reaching stores on Wednesday, DC Comics is rushing Supergirl #1 back to press for a new printing!
Supergirl #1 Second Printing features a story written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Ian Churchill and Norm Rapmund. The new printing features a pencil version of the cover by Michael Turner.
"I couldn't be happier for the team, but mostly for Supergirl herself," Loeb said. "I've said before that a good idea is a good idea -- and Supergirl is a great idea. Our hope is that readers and retailers will take the time to get to know her, just like the heroes and villains in the DCU are doing in the story."
Supergirl #1 Second Printing is available for order now and is scheduled to arrive in stores on Sept. 7

SUPERGIRL #1 FLIES BACK TO PRESS FOR THIRD PRINTING
September 13th, 2005 - With the second printing of SUPERGIRL #1 sold out at DC Comics a week before arriving in stores on September 8, DC sends this debut issue back to press for a third printing!
SUPERGIRL #1 is written by Jeph Loeb, with art by Ian Churchill & Norm Rapmund. Due to arrive in stores on September 28, this new printing features a new cover by Churchill, inspired by the classic cover of ADVENTURE COMICS #252.
"What the heck is going on?!" asks Loeb. "Supergirl, Power Girl, Wonder Woman are all in hot books! You'd think that suddenly the world woke up to fact that the DCU has strong, clever and often funny women who can drive the marketplace — and how great is that?! I'm very lucky to be working with such an extraordinary team: Ian Churchill, Mike Turner, Norm Rapmund, Peter Steigerwald and the fantastic Aspen color team and of course, my good luck charm, Richard Starkings. Big kisses to [Group Editor] Eddie Berganza and [Associate Editor] Jeanine Schaefer, too!"
Loeb adds, "Ian did this particular cover out of love for the original Supergirl and we wanted something that said thank you to all those fans who from 1958 until 2005 have stayed loyal to the character of Kara Zor-El. Personally, I think she's the coolest thing out there!"

GREG RUCKA TALKS SUPERGIRL
Following in line with the other changes that are coming down both creatively and editorially in the DC Universe post-Infinite Crisis, Superman’s cousin is due to a change in writers beginning with issue #7, when Jeph Loeb steps down as the regular writer on Supergirl, and Greg Rucka takes over the duties, joining forces with series artist Ian Churchill.
“I wanted to keep working with [Adventures of Superman editor] Eddie Berganza, but at the same time, I was really trying to cull the number of things I was doing for 2006,” Rucka told Newsarama. “I really overworked myself in 2005, and ended up lined up for a whole bunch of books that I had to back out of, most of which needed me to start on them immediately. After looking at possible titles that there was a little bit of time on, Supergirl came up, and I was asked if I’d be interested.
“There were a couple of other elements that came up at the same time, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized I’d really like to take a crack at it. I enjoyed writing Adventures of Superman, and would really like to keep a hand in that side of the DCU, and I’m also really intrigued by Kara, and think there’s a lot of cool stuff we can do there. So, I talked to Eddie for a bit, and got an idea of what Jeph is doing with his final issues in terms of where he’s going to be leaving us, and figured that it was something I’d really like to do.”
Among the elements of the new Supergirl that intrigued Rucka was, of course, the “stranger in a strange land” element that pervades Kara’s character, but at the same time, the character’s age offered something new for Rucka to explore.
“I like the idea that she’s a teenager and I that’s something I’m interested in looking at,” Rucka said. “That’s not to say that Kara is going to go to high school and worry about homework and boys. It’s an interesting age, and it’s an interesting age to explore with her. She is, in many ways, a blank slate, and to get in there, and take what Jeph has done, expand on it, and grow – that was an opportunity that I wanted to seize.”
Rucka is taking on the book at the start of the “One Year Later…” storyline, and as a result, wasn’t able to even hint at the barest traces of his first storyline, although he was more than willing to talk about the themes that would influence Kara and her view of the world in his run.
“She’s not well adjusted,” Rucka commented. “Would you be happy if you were in her place? Would you be content with your lot in life? Everything was taken away from her, you show up and were immediately the center of a massive tug of war. Your cousin thinks he’s your dad, and apparently also carries the whole world on his shoulders, and there’s the immediate expectation of you to do the same. And on top of that, he’s got some weird friends. You also hung out on an island with a bunch of women who have a very particular, if not peculiar philosophy of life. How do you find yourself in the midst of all of that?”
One hint Rucka said of his first arc is that the “world tour” aspect of Kara on Earth will be sidelined for a while. “Jeph will have wrapped up the world tour of the DCU and introduced Kara to everyone by the time I get on,” Rucka said. “I’m not looking at doing a bunch of crossovers and seeing who’s going to be guest-starring this issue. That’s just not the direction I’m interested in taking her. I’ve got nothing against doing that kind of arc, but we’ve got other things we want to sort out with her first. Once those things are sorted, we’ll worry about other things. Once we nail down who she is, we’ll worry about who she’s meeting.”

UNDERSTANDING THE SUPER(GIRL) SCHEDULE
In a recent Crisis Counseling session here at Newsarama, DCU Executive Editor Dan Didio said that he’s been taking any steps necessary to make sure all of DC’s books hit their schedules so that the “One Year Later” jump would be line-wide – without any stragglers.
As Monday’s press release from DC revealed, sometimes “any steps” may mean wrapping up an arc one issue earlier than planned, as Supergirl #5 will now be the final issue of Jeph Loeb and Ian Churchill’s run as a creative team on the series. The two will end their storyline in a 32 page issue, clearing the decks for Greg Rucka and Ed Benes to come on with issue #6, which will be the series’ first “One Year Later” issue.
“To get everything in line with what's going on with One Year Later in March, it was necessary to do,” series editor Eddie Berganza said when asked why a six issue arc was reduced to five issues. “Supergirl has been working just pre the continuity of Infinite Crisis. Her appearances in Superman, JLA and Crisis all follow the events after issue #5 for those that need to be specific as to where they store their comics.
“Jeph was able to craft his story without losing any punch to it within the compress space and Ian Churchill was able to draw it all in the compress time we had. And it’s important to note that neither skimmed on the quality of their work. At the end, we have a really good story that resolves a lot of things about Supergirl and where she's from, and also opens up a lot of possibilities.”
As Berganza explained, the shift in the series wasn’t wholly a matter correcting Supergirl’s schedule to get it to fit into One Year Later, but also, a final adjustment in response to the ripple effect Loeb’s schedule suffered after his son Sam passed away last year. While the writer was working at normal speed, some delays had worked their way into the system. “Some things are more important than getting your comics on Wednesday - and I know there's not much,” Berganza said. “We tried to get back on track as soon as we could. The fact that issue #5 was done so quickly shows it was not a matter of not being able to follow a schedule. That said, we are giving Ian a break, so he has time to breathe and things can settle at a more normal pace for everyone. Ed Benes will come on and do some issues.
“Aside from that the storyline changes are just in line with everything else going on in the DCU.”
For the artist, it marks his second time with the character relatively recently, although the last time he drew her, she was someone else. “Ed really caught my eye the first time he drew Kara on the Peter David run, and it's great to see his work on her again, especially with the story that Greg has come up with,” Berganza said. “He’s drawn some very pretty images and you can see how he’s evolved since he and Kara last worked together. You'll be looking at his storytelling and backgrounds as well as his hot girls this time around.”
And as far as the One Year Later story behind those covers go (Berganza declined to comment on Power Girl and Supergirl teamed as the new Nightwing and Flamebird of Kandor, while DC said that the unobstructed view of #6’s cover will be available when it his stores), the editor isn’t talking. “All I can say is that, as we’ve seen in Crisis, Kara goes into space with Donna Troy and then, we catch up to her in her book under some very interesting changes to her and her surroundings as part of the leap in time that all the books are doing.”
As Berganza hinted, final art duties for the issues in the series’ immediate future are still slightly up in the air (it looks as though Benes will return for issue #7 before leaving to take on Justice League of America with Brad Meltzer), but Churchill is coming back. “It's Ian's book,” Berganza said. “Ed's just minding the store. Ian's is also evolving and it will be very interesting and cool to see how he and Greg will be working together. There are some interesting twists and turns coming up. And some super-villains too. We been doing the tour of the superhero world, so we'll start meeting some of the dark side of the DCU. But first we'll have to get back from... well, you'll see...”
Newsarama Note: The silhouette cover, originally solicited for issue #7 is now the cover to issue #6, while the cover of Supergirl tearing off a different costume is the cover to issue #7.

extracting from wondercon 2006,
Waid said of Supergirl showing up in Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes, that part of the team thinks of her as a weird myth like King Arthur, others thinks she’s a comic book character, others think she’s a lunatic.
When the Legion finally asks Supergirl where she came from, the answer shocked his editor, Waid said.
Speaking of Supergirl, asked about the cover Newsarama featured this week showing Kara ripping off a costume to reveal a Supergirl costume underneath, new series writer Rucka said it could be indicative of identity issues, or it could be “just a cheesecake attempt to sell books”.

from the pages of newsarama...
Joe kelly is the new writer, taking over from Greg Rucka from issue 8 onward.
When asked about the change, Rucka told Newsarama:
"It's such a mixed blessing for me. I hate having to walk away from the book before I even got underway, but the fact is my commitments for the coming year have passed the ‘overwhelming’ stage and reached ‘apocalyptic flood’ stage. Between Checkmate, 52, Supergirl and something like three novels to be written in the next eight months, something had to give, and, sadly, it was Kara who got the axe. I hate having to let the book go, but that's the way it shook out.
"The good is, of course, that Joe Kelly is taking over, and he is, in all ways, outstanding. His ideas are amazing, and his take on Kara will be something the fans are going to love."

Since the new Supergirl, Kara Zor-El, showed up on earth in Superman/Batman #8, the young hero has been confused about her place in the DCU.
She's not the only one. Since the character's solo series was launched in fall 2005, she's interacted with the Outsiders, battled with Teen Titans, fought alongside the Amazons, and spent time with the Legion of Super-Heroes -- but permanently joined none of those groups. And in the same time period, she's gone through several creative teams and variations, searching for an audience among the throngs of loyal DC readers who adore her Kryptonian cousin.
But DC is hoping to change all that, giving both the series and the character a clearer direction. According to the publisher, the Supergirl series will get an ongoing creative team of writer Kelley Puckett (Batgirl, Green Arrow) and artist Drew Johnson (Wonder Woman) beginning with issue #23. And as Supergirl becomes a member of the Teen Titans within that ongoing team title, Puckett and Johnson hope to further define the character in her solo series, promising readers a "surprise" that will clarify her place in the DCU.
Newsarama talked to Puckett about Supergirl, what readers can expect of the character as he takes over her series, and why he's so often tapped to write young heroines.
Newsarama: First off Kelley, how did you get the Supergirl gig from DC Comics?
Kelley Puckett: I was working with Matt Idelson on an as-yet unannounced project when he took over the book from Eddie Berganza. Matt, who has a long history of poor judgment, decided to give me first crack at it.
NRAMA: It's not surprising to see you writing a female lead character book because you've written them in the past. What do you think it takes to write strong female leads? And why do you think you're good at it?
KP: I don't know that I am good at it, but I somehow seem to have become the (very) poor man's Joss Whedon in this industry. Honestly, I never know how to answer that question. I just write the character as I see her.
NRAMA: There's been some talk in the past about this comic being marketed toward female readers. Is that the idea behind the comic now? Or is it more directed at DC's core audience of men?
KP: In terms of marketing as in the Marketing Department, I have no idea how they see the book or what their plans are. Editorially speaking, we're all trying to do the same thing: good superhero comics. As the writer I can't think about what might appeal to this person or that person. I can only write what appeals to me.
That being said, if female readers end up hating the book en masse, I'm probably doing something wrong.
NRAMA: Have you read past incarnations of Supergirl? Are you influenced by them? Do you think the current Kara resembles or should resemble any of those?
KP: Well, I read those old school Supergirl stories when I was growing up, so I'm very much influenced by them. What I took away from them was that Supergirl was a character about Hope and Possibility, and that's something I intend to bring to my run on the book.
NRAMA: How would you describe Kara as a character? What's unique about her, her powers, and her personality?
KP: What's unique about Supergirl is that she's not unique. She's Superman. She's a Superman in a world that already has a Superman, and that's a problem for her (and me).
The big question for the character, and one that I think every story so far has been implicitly asking, is what exactly is she supposed to do? Where does she fit in? I have a very specific answer to that question, and it's one that's going to make her even more unique in the DCU.
NRAMA: Where is she right now in her life and how are you able to identify with that?
KP: Short answer... she's a teenager. So she has to deal with all the superficial teenage stuff, but more importantly, she's working through the deeper processes of adolescence. She's struggling with her self-identity and moving beyond her parent figure. Only her parent figure is the greatest hero in the history of the universe, so everything's a little amplified for her.
Fortunately I never matured much past adolescence (just ask my wife), so identifying with Kara is no problem at all.
NRAMA: Who are the key characters that will be a part of Supergirl's solo book?
KP: The key characters for the first storyline will be Superman, Batman and Vandal Savage.
NRAMA: Vandal Savage? Is he the villain in the storyline?
KP: Well, he is a villain, certainly. To Supergirl, however, he's more of...how should I put this? More of a resource.
NRAMA: You also mentioned Batman. He doesn't trust Kara very much, does he? Will that change?
KP: Batman doesn't trust anyone, but Kara's going to discover that he believes in her more than she realizes.
NRAMA: Will she be interacting with Superman more? What is her relationship with him?
KP: Her relationship with Superman underlies everything she does and everything she tries to do.
NRAMA: We've seen her dating, but never really settling down. Will she have a more steady love interest? Still "shopping around?" Or is that something you'll back away from?
KP: She's going to be dealing with far heavier issues for a while. She won't even be thinking in those terms.
Of course, isn't that usually when love hits?
NRAMA: Can you tell us what your first storyline will focus upon?
KP: I don't want to give anything away, because I think we're really doing something pretty unique, but I can say that if you've felt that the character's never really quite found her "place" in the DCU so far, you won't feel that way after our first storyline.
NRAMA: Now that Supergirl is in the Teen Titans, will you be working with writer Sean McKeever on the character's direction at all? And will the Teen Titans and her relationship with them play any part
in her solo series?
KP: I haven't spoken with Sean about what he's doing with her in Teen Titans. I'm a huge fan of his work and I think we have similar sensibilities, but a team book has a different dynamic than a solo series. You can't write Batman in Batman the way you can write him in JLA. Sean has to do what's best for his book and things can get needlessly complicated if you try to "synch up" too much.
NRAMA: How has it been working with Drew Johnson?
KP: Drew's been amazing. As good as his Wonder Woman stuff was, this stuff is in a different league. He's also helped me a lot with the character and the direction of the series. Everybody involved is really motivated and very excited to get our issues out, because we think people are really going to be surprised.
NRAMA: What else are you working on now?
KP: Right around now my last issue of Ninja Scroll (#11) from Wildstorm should be out, I think. It's a horrible, brutal story that nobody should read. But it looks very pretty, thanks to Jonboy Meyers, who everybody's going to be seeing a lot more of real soon.
NRAMA: Since you created the character, can we ask your opinion, while we have you, on what's been happening with Cassandra Cain?
KP: You know, I'm flattered that people ask me about that, but at the end of the day if the character's name starts with "Bat"...then it's not your character. She's not an easy character to write. She wasn't easy for me, and I created her. So my sympathies go out to everybody who has tried to make her work.
NRAMA: Getting back to Supergirl, do you know how long you're going to be on the comic?
KP: I think we're in for a nice, long run. We're really opening up the possibilities of the character and there's no end in sight.
NRAMA: OK, then, finally -- the sell. Why do you think people would want to check out your run on Supergirl?
KP: Supergirl's going to ask a question that no superhero has asked before. And then she's going to try to answer it. If you're looking for something different, something unlike any other book on the stands, check it out.
