In blackest day ... In brightest night ...
Beware your fears made into light.
Let those who try to stop what's right...
Burn like my power ... Sinestro's might!

That oath has been anticipated by Green Lantern readers for the last year, and in this week’s oversized Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special #1, writer Geoff Johns and artist Ethan Van Sciver introduced their promised Sinestro Corps, complete with hundreds of yellow, fear-powered rings, and setting up a story of cosmic war that will be featured in both the Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps titles this summer.

And as readers of the 64-page one-shot found out, there’s a lot more to this story than just guys with green rings fighting guys with yellow rings. Not only does Sinestro have some of DC’s most powerful and feared villains on his side, but there are several new discoveries for Green Lantern fans to soak in -- from the huge green entity who is the embodiment of willpower, to the spectrum of emotions and prophesies rejected by the Guardians of Oa, to the emotional possession by Parallax of yet another hero.

Plus, of course, cool-looking scary alien dudes. Lots and lots of cool-looking scary aliens.

But the real kicker? Among those evil Sinestro allies – leading the whole thing, it turns out – is one surprise villain that caused a collective jaw drop across DC's readership this week as they turned to the issue’s final page: The Anti-Monitor.

If your head is still reeling from a “too-much-power” hangover after reading the one-shot, sit back and take a break as we hear from the writer himself about the issue -- and find out what other surprises Johns and friends might have in store for Green Lantern fans as the story of the Sinestro Corps continues.

THE LANTERN'S ARTISTS, I - ETHAN VAN SCIVER

by Vaneta Rogers

While Green Lantern #25, the finale to the Sinestro Corps War storyline by writer Geoff Johns with art by penciller Ivan Reis, ended what many are calling DC’s blockbuster event of the year, there were a few pages by Ethan Van Sciver interspersed among the others that did something else.

Instead of wrapping up the story, they gave a glimpse into the future.

In an issue that was filled with Reis-drawn splash pages depicting a war between hundreds of the DC universe’s most powerful beings – from hand-to-hand brawls through glass-front buildings to ring-charged battles over the skies of Earth – two splash pages by Van Sciver were stuck in the middle of the story, teasing a future “War of Light” complete with strange looking creatures wearing colored rings.

And as if that wasn’t enough to pique the interest of readers, at the end of the 54-page issue, Van Sciver drew a prologue that promised another blockbuster event in 2009 called The Blackest Night.

In part one of our two-part discussion with the artists of Sinestro Corps War and Green Lantern (with Ivan Reis coming tomorrow), Newsarama attempted to get a little clarification on those few select pages from Van Sciver. And despite all the buzz about “The Blackest Night” in 2009, we found out that fans may not have to wait that long to see more work from Van Sciver – he and Johns are slated to work together before that on something else.

Newsarama: It's got to feel good to see some of this revealed to fans. You and Geoff have been talking about “The Blackest Night” for awhile now, right?

Ethan Van Sciver: Yes. We've been talking about it for over a year now. Well, actually longer than that. We've been piecing things together pretty much since Rebirth and trying to work them out.

NRAMA: Well, let's just talk for a second about this interview, because people might be expecting some great insight into the story that Ivan and Geoff are doing over the next year and a half, but you've made it clear you don't want to do that. You and I are just going to be talking about your designs for these 11 pages you did in Green Lantern #25.

EVS: Yeah. I don't want to ruin any story points. It's all so big and it's so involved, what Geoff's doing, and what Ivan and everyone involved are doing, and I don't want to ruin it. But I can tell you what I was thinking when I drew these characters.

NRAMA: OK, let's talk in general about the idea of the lanterns who would represent these colors on this two-page spread you did for the “War of Light.”

EVS: We found the idea of the seven different colors and what they meant, and then we tried to see what each of the different corps would represent and what kind of people they were.

I always call it a religion. I think of these different colors as religions. And I use that word with Geoff, and I'm not sure that he agrees. But the way I think of it is that they all sort of focus around one sort of human drive. Not even an emotion. I know it's called the emotional spectrum, but I tend to use the word "drive," because willpower isn't as much an emotion as a human drive. You have the willpower to get something done. You do something because you have will. Fear is a reason to make something happen because you cause fear in somebody, or you have fear, and that's a reason to do or not do something. Hope is the same thing.

So I believe that all of these emotions, or drives, that are attached to colors are like that. They're something that human beings would use to compel themselves to do something. And so of course we have hate, avarice, fear, willpower, hope, compassion and love. Is that right?

NRAMA: Yep. That's the list.

EVS: And then black. Black is death, I guess. Death isn't really a drive though, is it?

NRAMA: No, I guess it's the absence of human drives and emotions.

EVS: Yeah. So those are the colors.

NRAMA: OK, in this War of Light spread you drew, the art seems similar to what you did with that double-page spread in the Sinestro Corps Special, filling it with characters that you designed. I know you're constantly discussing things with Geoff, but these two pages are filled with aliens designed pretty much by you, correct?

EVS: Yes. I mean, it's all me stabbing in the dark. I think Geoff said, "Ethan, we want to see all the corps represented here." And he wasn't very specific about it this time, except to say that certain corps should be represented a certain way. My personal favorites are the Red Lanterns. I loooove the Red Lanterns. [laughs] I love to hate them.

NRAMA: Hate is what they're all about, right?

EVS: Yeah. I thought the hate lanterns would be fantastic, because who's going to put on a ring that says, you know, "You are capable of feeling great hatred" or "inspiring great hatred?" If a ring came to me and said that to me, I think I'd swat it away.

NRAMA: What’s with the red stuff coming out of their mouths? Is that what happens when you put on a red ring?

EVS: I thought the hate energy would be so strong within you that it would literally come out your pores, it would come out your nostrils and it would come out your mouth. You would just vomit red energy everywhere. Your eyes would go red and you'd just hate.

NRAMA: Anything you can tell us about the characters you drew in particular?

EVS: I created three very specific Red Lanterns on here and gave them names.

NRAMA: Can you tell us their names?

EVS: No. You’ll have to read the story Geoff and Ivan are doing to learn about the Red Lanterns. But I think the Red Lanterns are a lot scarier, they're a lot more aggressive and filled with rage, and a lot less sophisticated than an army that Sinestro would have put together. A lot more dangerous, I think. Rabid. You know, like rabid animals. And that's why I like the Red Lanterns.

NRAMA: And you created their symbols, right?

EVS: I had to create brand new symbols for everybody. I think almost everybody needed something to be developed. And you know, the basic idea of all these symbols has to be a circle, because that's a lot of what this is about. But I can’t talk about what they mean.

NRAMA: OK, next color on the spectrum is orange, representing avarice, or greed.

EVS: The orange lanterns. I can't really talk much about them either.

NRAMA: Well, it's hard not to notice that they're represented a little differently. They're all kind of glowing. That's on purpose, right? There's a reason for it.

EVS: I can't go into any more detail about that.

NRAMA: And then the Sinestro Corps, with whom we’re pretty familiar already. We’ve talked with you about them before. They’re the corps representing the color yellow and the concept of fear.

EVS: And we've already said the Sinestro Corps symbol was pulled from the original Parallax costume that Hal Jordan wore. One of these days, maybe for one of these trade paperbacks or something, I will take a picture of Parallax and do a little traced outline around his costume to show where that symbol was. A lot of people have asked me where it is.

NRAMA: That's a good idea. OK, let's go to hope.

EVS: The blue lanterns. I think my only real priority for the blue lanterns was to say that they all need to be heroic looking. They all need to look noble; they all need to look kind; they all need to look like friendly aliens. You can't have big monster aliens that represent hope, at least not to me. You know, we're just trying to establish them, and I don't know if this will represent every last one. So the few blue lanterns that I drew are superheroic looking aliens.

NRAMA: So next would be indigo?

EVS: Oh, yeah, indigo is actually interesting. Geoff asked me to draw a war featuring all of these corps, and for the life of me, I couldn't find a way to make a group of aliens who believe so strongly in compassion go to war. [laughs]

NRAMA: They don’t look like they’re fighting.

EVS: Geoff's initial thought was that they're very shaman-istic and a little like native Americans. And they don't look as high-tech as the other lantern corps do.

NRAMA: And they have tattoos or markings. They wear their symbols on their body?

EVS: Yeah, that's the idea. They wear this kind of glowing body make-up. It may mean something. It may not.

NRAMA: And the violet lanterns?

EVS: These ones were tricky because I don't want to say too much about them yet. Geoff and I spoke about the violet lanterns and whether or not men could be violet lanterns, and I thought they could be and I wasn't sure. So all I did was draw one ring of these violet lanterns and what their costumes look like. And I made them women for now. But people will have to keep reading to find out more.

NRAMA: OK, then let's just talk about how they're fighting, according to your design here. They're in a group, holding hands.

EVS: And in what shape do they hold hands? In a circle. In a ring. We'll have to wait and see what they’re all about.

So this is what we have. This is where it begins. But I think it's interesting that the great thing about all these corps is that they encompass every aspect of humanity, of life. Any one of us could look at these, at this spectrum, and decide where we would most likely fit in.

NRAMA: People are already doing that on message boards – placing themselves in a group. But going back to this picture for a second here: None of the colors have humans from Earth, right?

EVS: I don't see any.

NRAMA: Does that mean there won't be any? Or do you know?

EVS: Well, it may well be that certain Earth beings would get rings. But we wouldn't tell you that. Yet. You should have asked Geoff. [laughs]

NRAMA: Damn! I should have! OK, and you drew the introduction of the prophecy. The spread before this.

EVS: Yeah, I wanted to make sure I hinted at the different symbols there and all the different shaped lanterns, but not really reveal it until the next page.

NRAMA: Oh, yeah. The lanterns are a little different looking from each other, aren't they?

EVS: Yeah.

NRAMA: And at the end. You drew The Blackest Night tease.

EVS: The last few pages. I just want to say, notice the symbol on the black rings. It all comes together. Everything ties together. It all means something.

NRAMA: Geoff told us to look at those. It sure looks like a certain character's symbol on those rings.

EVS: Yyyyeah.

NRAMA: This has been going on since waaaay back when, hasn't it?

EVS: Go back and read Green Lantern #5 and #6, for those of you who are just jumping in. And give yourself some clues.

NRAMA: Did you draw #5 and #6?

EVS: I drew #5. The great Simone Bianchi drew issue #6 before he defected to Marvel to draw Wolverine and Astonishing X-Men.

NRAMA: At that time, were you aware, when you were drawing #5, what was coming?

EVS: Yes and no. It was all evolving. The ideas were there. It's like with Sinestro Corps, when the idea started way back as just an idea, it was just clear that he would form an opposing army to Hal. But then the Zamorans already existed, and all this stuff kind of fell into place. We were chatting through all of this, even back when we were doing Rebirth, and these revelations would just happen. That was happening all along.

And that's the way Geoff works. That's the way his stories are. It all builds on what's already set up, and it just steam rolls that way until it all ties together into one magical present, tied up with a pretty bow.

NRAMA: So Geoff has this revelation about something, and it will all be explained eventually, but we find out that there were clues all along?

EVS: Yes. It's amazing how well all this was put together.

NRAMA: And you're working with Geoff on The Blackest Night?

EVS: I don't think we want to say too much about how that project's being done, but I'm involved.

NRAMA: And you're still doing an issue of Justice League like you told Newsarama in Chicago, right?

EVS: Yeah. I'm working on that now. It’s going to be Justice League #20.

NRAMA: And you know, every time Dan DiDio has you on a panel, he says something about you doing Plastic Man, and there's a lot of buzz about it. A lot of fans miss Plastic Man. Point blank, Ethan: Are you doing Plastic Man?

EVS: I might be. Dan has actually said to me now that we're ready to go. For a long time, my ideas for Plastic Man were kind of looked at as, "Where are we going to put this? How is this going to work with what plans are already in place for the DCU?" But suddenly, everything has sort of come together and Dan has agreed to make the changes that I thought should be made in the character. And he's saying that whenever I want to do it, I can come do it. It's a matter of time. So at some time, I would still love to do Plastic Man, but I've got obligations now. I don't have the time right now. I had my window of opportunity, and I missed it a little bit.

NRAMA: Obligations? What are you doing after Justice League?

EVS: Right after Justice League, I have something else I can't talk about.

NRAMA: Not Blackest Night?

EVS: I'm going to immediately start another project that is not Blackest Night. It's another huge thing with Geoff Johns. I cannot tell you anything about it.

NRAMA: Hmmm. Since you can’t talk about that, let’s go back to this Blackest Night tease. Besides telling us to go back and look at some key issues, can you talk at all about what's coming? The dead will rise? Is the term “zombies” correct?

EVS: No, I really can't say anything else about that.

NRAMA: OK, then just as a final question related to the design of this last page: Whose hand is that coming out of the ground? Or is it just a generic dead hand?

EVS: Ah... that's a good question. We'll see. It may be a generic hand. Or it may be someone you know very, very well.

As readers were introduced to the Alpha-Lanterns in last week's Green Lantern #27, one thing became clear: Being an Alpha-Lantern isn't everything it's cracked up to be.

Although it was difficult to discern exactly what was done to those members of the Green Lantern Corps who were chosen and agreed to become Alpha-Lanterns, it didn't look pretty. And what emerged from the surgery was a strange robotic, unfeeling shell of the former Lanterns, but with a whole new type of power.

Now writer Sterling Gates will be exploring what it means to be an Alpha-Lantern in a two-part story in Green Lantern Corps beginning with this month's issue #21. The two issues will focus on Boodikka, a member of the Corps who was among those chosen to become an Alpha-Lantern.

Introduced to the Green Lantern Corps mythos by Geoff Johns from an idea credited to Grant Morrison, the Alpha-Lanterns are part-person/part-machinery hybrids that were created by the leaders of the Green Lanterns – the Guardians of Oa. This new faction of Alpha-Lanterns serves as a sort of "internal affairs" arm for the Green Lantern Corps, and it's been implied that they combine a lack of emotion with an internal power level beyond that of a normal ring-bearing Green Lantern.

The two issues by Gates were recently added to the Green Lantern Corps title's schedule after the originally solicited two-part story by regular writer Peter Tomasi was shuffled to future issues. While Gates said he doesn't know why the change was made to the fill-in issues, he's obviously happy to get the chance to flex his writing muscles again after writing a Tales of the Sinestro Corps back-up story last year, as well his work on December's Green Lantern/Sinestro Corps Secret Files issue.

Newsarama talked to Gates about his story about Boodikka as well as the role of the Alpha-Lanterns – and we found out these new Lanterns will play what Gates is calling a "major" part in Final Crisis.

Newsarama: To start with Sterling, this is a little bit of a step up from a back-up story. How did you get this gig?

Sterling Gates: After the gargantuan amount of work that was the Green Lantern/Sinestro Corps Secret Files, our editor Eddie Berganza called me and asked if I'd be interested in working on two issues of Green Lantern Corps. Of course I said, "Yes!" I wanted to do something with the Alpha-Lanterns that Geoff wouldn't necessarily be covering over in Green Lantern, so I pitched a story that looked a little deeper into what it's like to be an Alpha-Lantern. The Alpha-Lanterns play a huge part in some upcoming DCU stories, including Final Crisis, so I wanted to point the spotlight at them even more.

NRAMA: What are you going to be focusing on in this story?

SG: In Green Lantern, we saw Boodikka's (which is pronounced Boo-DEEK-uh) transformation into an Alpha-Lantern. Our story follows her next steps. Within it, we find out that when her sector partner was killed in the Sinestro Corps War, their ring went out and found a replacement. Now that replacement isn't doing their work and is disobeying the orders of the Guardians by not reporting in for training, so Boodikka is sent to investigate.

Things take a turn, however, when she discovers the negligent Green Lantern is the sister she left behind to join the Corps. And she's not happy to see Boodikka. Or an Alpha-Lantern, for that matter!

NRAMA: We saw a little bit of what the Alpha-Lanterns do in Green Lantern. But can you elaborate on what role the Alpha-Lanterns play within the Corps?

SG: The Alpha-Lanterns act as "Internal Affairs" for the Green Lantern Corps. If someone isn't doing their job right, they get flagged, and one of the Alpha-Lanterns is sent in to see why they're not doing the job.

You know, Grant [Morrison] really hit on a wonderful idea and started the ball rolling with the Alpha-Lanterns, conceptualizing them, then Geoff developed the idea even further in Green Lantern. I'm focusing in on one of them in particular and really delving into her character and what drives her to be an Alpha. So as we follow Boodikka's investigation, we'll also be exploring her past and why she left her family behind. This story really serves as an origin story for Boodikka, looking back at her life while moving her forward as a character and an Alpha.

NRAMA: Can someone read this story without having read Green Lantern #27, which introduced the Alpha-Lanterns?

SG: Sure. The idea is that it's like Alpha-Lantern #1. If you've read Green Lantern, then you know what's going on. But in Corps, on page one, we give you an origin box of what the Alpha-Lanterns are and what they do to try to make it very reader friendly.

NRAMA: Are you going to explore what powers the Alpha-Lanterns have and what they can do that someone with a regular Green Lantern ring cannot do?

SG: Right at the beginning of the first issue, you'll see something that Alpha-Lanterns can do that Green Lanterns are not able to. In Green Lantern #27, Geoff revealed that they're part Manhunter, which puts a totally different spin on their powers and what their abilities are. As we saw with Laira, they're able to shut rings down, which, as an Internal Affairs officer, is important, because they need to be able to disarm Green Lanterns. But we'll see a little more about their powers in this story.

NRAMA: It was also implied in Green Lantern that the Guardians desired the Alpha-Lanterns to be free of emotion. Is that part of what you're exploring in these issues?

SG: Yeah. Part of their "programming" suppresses their emotions for justice. And whether or not Alpha-Lanterns' emotions can emerge from underneath that programming remains to be seen.

NRAMA: Did you have to do a lot of research for this, or had you already done all the research you needed when you were working on the Secret Files issue?

SG: You know, I did so much research for Secret Files. But that research paid off, and I knew exactly what scenes from her past we'd seen before that I wanted to use – specifically Emerald Twilight, where Hal Jordan and Boodikka square off and she loses her hand. That causes a whole rift between her and Hal, and she's unable to forgive him. And we'll touch on that in this story.

But her past besides that is almost entirely unexplored. She shows up in Green Lantern and just says, "Hi! I'm this totally bad-ass warrior chick. Ha-Ha! Make me a Green Lantern!" I really wanted to find out why she even wanted to be a Green Lantern in the first place, and what happened to her family after she left.

NRAMA: As you said, an important part of her past is that she was one of the Lost Lanterns. Is her relationship with the other Lost Lanterns going to play a part in this story?

SG: Absolutely. I think that relationship was really important to her before she became an Alpha-Lantern. And once she becomes an Alpha-Lantern, the Lost Lanterns feel she's become something different, something they can't identify with.

NRAMA: It was kind of creepy, the way they became Alpha-Lanterns.

SG: Oh, it was disgusting! And I've had talks with Geoff about this. To me, the morality is a little shady – the ethics of what the Guardians do. Because they essentially gut them, and take their hearts out and replace them with power batteries. And the question is, does that constitute murder? That's something that will be really interesting to look at later. But that scene was as disturbing as it was completely disgusting.

NRAMA: So, she's not just the Bionic Woman with a few robotic parts.

SG: No, she's now something... more.

NRAMA: What's it been like working with Nelson?

SG: Nelson's incredible. And he's extremely talented and extremely fast. As soon as I would turn something in, he'd have a rough version, and a finished version within days. His work has a very classic feel, yet he does a really good job of marrying it with a very modern look.

NRAMA: This is a pretty big break for you, isn't it? The back-up story you did in the Superman Prime one-shot and the Secret Files were first steps, but this is your first work on a monthly title, and your first story going more than one issue.

SG: Yeah, I can't wait to actually go to a store and see it on the shelf!

NRAMA: Is there anything else you want to tell people about the issue?

SG: I just hope people pick it up and give it a chance. The Alpha-Lanterns are such a great idea, and they're going to play a major part in Final Crisis.

When Green Lantern readers were told at the end of last year’s blockbuster Sinestro Corps War that another high-profile storyline – the Blackest Night – was coming in 2009, it seemed an awfully long way off.

But if this week’s Green Lantern #28 is any indication, the predictions of the Blackest Night prophecy are already starting to take shape. As next month’s Green Lantern issue #29 starts a new “Secret Origin” storyline, readers are seeing the seeds planted for what is already anticipated as one of next year’s must-read events.

Previewed in several pages of the oversized Green Lantern #25 in December, the prophesized War of Light and Blackest Night have caused a lot of fan buzz ever since. Readers were led to believe that sometime in the next year, not only would there be Sinestro Corps members wielding fear-powered rings of yellow against the Green Lanterns, but there would be new corps harnessing the energy of other emotions by wearing corresponding colored rings.

It was teased as something we’d see in the future. Yet already, more than one other color showed up in this week’s issue. And months before the promised Rage of the Red Lanterns storyline later this year, with this issue, the cosmos of the DCU now has two Red Lanterns spewing their red energy of hate.

As we checked in with Green Lantern writer Geoff Johns to talk about this week’s issue, we found out that the next storyline, Secret Origin, is more than just a look back at Hal Jordan’s past. Not only does the story arc represent what Johns hopes is a resurgence of the “Secret Origin” concept in the DCU, but it kicks off the road to Blackest Night by revealing more about Hal Jordan, Sinestro, and the mysterious new Red Lantern named Atrocitus.

Newsarama: This issue was filled with hints about what’s coming and obviously begins the journey toward this “War of Light” and the Blackest Night storyline we keep hearing about. When are we going to find out answers to all these mysteries, Geoff?

Geoff Johns: Keep reading Green Lantern. The reason I didn't want to jump to Blackest Night is that I have a lot of stories to tell. I have a lot of characters to build. And I have a certain journey that Hal Jordan is going through as he weaves between these different corps and comes face to face with them. There's a specific journey for him to take to get him prepped for Blackest Night, and to get the Green Lantern mythology prepared for the Blackest Night.

NRAMA: So this tease we saw at the end of the Sinestro Corps War in Green Lantern #25, where there are all these different corps, isn't going to just suddenly happen. We're going to get just a few concepts or characters introduced at a time over the next year or so?

GJ: I want to lay out these characters and invest the time in them. The overall plots and the storylines are intricate, and I really want to explore this to its ultimate potential. Each one of them deserves a spotlight, deserves some time, instead of just having them all show up. It's not going to work that way. The Corps are so different, they act so differently and the rings are so different. Every one has such a different purpose.

It's Hal Jordan's journey that we'll see through Secret Origin, through Rebirth and Sinestro Corps and Blackest Night, really. It culminates into a big part of his journey as a human being and as a Green Lantern.

NRAMA: Let's talk about this issue, then we can talk a little about what comes next. In the beginning of Green Lantern #28, we see the red part of the emotional spectrum emerge.

GJ: Well, you see a Red Lantern. He's the first Red Lantern, on the planet Ysmault. Atrocitus.

NRAMA: He's one of the Red Lanterns we saw in the spread that Ethan Van Sciver did in Green Lantern #25, where the War of Light was previewed, right? This is that same character?

GJ: Yep. Ethan came up with that name – Atrocitus - and I loved it. So I immediately began drafting his backstory, the role he played in the past and the role he’ll play in the present. Atrocitus is a main character in Secret Origin and the Blackest Night.

NRAMA: Does Atrocitus have anything to do with the Alan Moore story from Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual #2, where we saw Abin Sur on Ysmault?

GJ: Atrocitus was there on Ysmault at the time of that story, but he's a brand new character. Alan’s story told about the fall of the Green Lanterns and Sodam Yat, but beyond that, it didn't say much. It’s one of those little gems that sparks a bigger idea. I thought if there was a doomsday prophecy for the Green Lanterns there was no other name for it than “the Blackest Night.”

NRAMA: In his introduction, he kills Qull, whom astute Green Lantern fans have noted is the prisoner on Ysmault who told the prophecy of doom to Abin Sur back in the Alan Moore story.

GJ: Yes. He is the one who first told Abin Sur the prophecy.

NRAMA: It was implied in Green Lantern's history that Qull only told Abin Sur the prophecy of the Corps' doom in order to scare him. Does this scene in Green Lantern #28 confirm that? He tells Atrocitus he "planted the seeds of fear" within Abin Sur.

GJ: Yeah, he told him he planted the seeds of fear. But at the same time, it's true. However, like other ancient texts it can be deciphered and looked at on several levels. It could apply to the universe or the soul of an individual character or both. It could be subtext or literal. It could be everything and nothing. That’s what prophecies are.

NRAMA: Although it didn’t happen exactly the way it was foretold, there was a battle between the sentient city Ranx and the planet Mogo and the Children of the White Lobe. There was a Green Lantern named Sodam Yat. Those things were all predicted in the prophecy.

GJ: Yeah. But Qull was not all-seeing. The prisoners on Ysmault are not all-seeing. They found this prophecy somewhere else. They're not as powerful as the Guardians or anything. There's quite a bit of history with those prisoners that hasn't been revealed that will. You’ll have to read Secret Origin for that.

NRAMA: Atrocitus says "your innards will give me my freedom, Qull, and your blood my power." So does Atrocitus have to kill him in order to use the power of hate?

GJ: How a Red Lantern is chosen, why and what makes them different than the other Lanterns will be explored. And it involves blood, of course.

NRAMA: Laira is the second Red Lantern who is recruited at the end of the story. And in her transformation, we saw what Ethan Van Sciver told us about the Red Lanterns, where the energy of hate just comes pouring out of their mouths.

GJ: It's not pleasant. And also, it's the far end of the spectrum, so this power really eats you up inside.

NRAMA: When you say it's the far end of the spectrum, you're talking about how the colors in the middle, such as green and yellow, are easier to control and wield, while the colors further out are not?

GJ: Red is further from the middle of the spectrum.

NRAMA: Similar to the other end of the spectrum: The uncontrolled power of love we saw in the Star Sapphires.

GJ: Yeah. You saw the same thing in the Star Sapphires earlier when we introduced them again. You saw the power and what it does. It almost completely takes someone over. The red power is a little bit different, and again, we'll get into that more as we flesh out the Red Lanterns. I'll tackle them a lot more in the Rage of the Red Lanterns arc.

NRAMA: Both of these Red Lanterns, Atrocitus and Laira, are directing their rage toward Sinestro?

GJ: Interesting, isn't it? [laughs] Interesting how that worked out. The idea is that with all of these corps, I've laid out all the individual motivations. They're all different, and they're all intertwined. They all have something personal at stake. And the reason for Atrocitus' attention toward Sinestro will be a major point of the Secret Origin arc coming up. Why he has rage against Sinestro will all be revealed there.

NRAMA: Are we going to see a whole lot more Red Lanterns recruited?

GJ: Not yet. Not for a little while. And there's a reason for it when they all start coming out. There's a reason that the Red Lanterns surge after Secret Origin, and there's a reason it can't start until then.

NRAMA: Is there anything else you want to say about the Red Lanterns?

GJ: Keep an eye on Atrocitus.

NRAMA: OK... let's talk about the color orange. There's a character named Agent Orange?

GJ: Yes. He will be my favorite new character. I’m already sure of that. He’s too much fun to write.

NRAMA: And the person who mentions him is the Guardian who was scarred by the Anti-Monitor during the Sinestro Corps War?

GJ: Yeah! I've nicknamed her "Scar." I just call her Scar for my own purposes -- you know, in my story notes. 'Cause she obviously has that scar. She hasn't taken the name herself or anything, though.

NRAMA: She's the one who just recruited the Green Lantern Ash to find the corpse of the Anti-Monitor. Is it right that we should be suspicious of what her agenda is here?

GJ: It's probably not good. [laughs] Her agenda's probably not good.

NRAMA: She was allegedly “resting.”

GJ: Yeah. She's not being completely honest with the Guardians.

NRAMA: Just one more question about the color orange – we not only heard a mention of Agent Orange, but also saw the Controllers interested in the energy of the color orange, correct?

GJ: Yeah. There's a couple of splinter tribes out there that have left the Guardians. You have the Zamarons and the Controllers. The Controllers are kind of like these guys who have batted zero for 1000, and someone has helped them discover that there are these powers out there, and they want to grab one of their own.

NRAMA: And so they're looking at the color orange, which is the color of avarice. Can we assume Agent Orange is also someone who is interested in the power of avarice?

GJ: I think that's probably a fair assumption, but you can never assume anything about where this story is going. It's definitely not going anywhere that it looks like it's going. That’s the fun of it.

NRAMA: The other big scene in here involves Sinestro and Hal, and their relationship is what you are mainly going to concentrate upon in the next story arc, right?

GJ: Secret Origin is Hal Jordan's story of how he first completely embraces what being a Green Lantern is. And by doing that, he overcomes some things that have held him back in life. His attitude – he’s a little bit blind to his faults in the beginning. He lays a lot of blame and anger and frustration on other people. But he's extremely passionate and he's a good guy. You see in the first issue of Secret Origin that he's been in this cloud of a life that isn't normal, that hasn't really provided him anything that he emotionally needed. He's completely out of touch with a lot of people. He doesn't have a good relationship with his family or his co-workers.

So you have Hal Jordan who thinks he knows what he's doing, and then you have someone come in who actually does know what he's doing and at the height of his career in Sinestro. And obviously, Sinestro telling Hal Jordan what to do isn't going to work. Hal's not going to want to listen to anybody. And Sinestro's not going to want to have someone not listen to him. So it's the story of these two guys, and really, the story is key to the foundation of the Green Lantern mythology and everything that we're doing. There’s an extremely specific reason why this story has to be told.

NRAMA: Didn't it say at the end of the Sinestro Corps War, in Green Lantern #25, that the powers of fear and willpower will unite?

GJ: They'll have to. That's what the trailer said. If they want to survive.

NRAMA: That points toward Sinestro and Hal Jordan having to fight on the same side.

GJ: Right. But if you read the issue closely, and if you read Green Lantern #28, Sinestro has a very different view of what it's going to take to combat any kind of dark prophecy. He doesn't know the details, but he knows something. And you see him in that final scene, talking to Hal, he says the Green Lantern Corps will be strong enough to do this because of me.

NRAMA: In this issue, Sinestro says, "I believe in the Green Lantern Corps, Hal Jordan."

GJ: Yeah. [laughs] "Don't you?"

But the Guardians believe that prevention is the only answer, instead of preparation. They're focused on prevention. Right now, that's probably the wrong thing to do. They think they can control it and contain it.

NRAMA: Sinestro says they're going to panic when they finally realize they can't prevent it.

GJ: Yeah. Well, they're trying to cut emotion out of it so hard, and there's a reason for that. Their emotions would be extremely powerful and would power other spectrums. So if a Guardian got really angry, it would power that spectrum. That's why they need to temper their emotions.

NRAMA: Why did Hal go immediately after that trial and see Sinestro?

GJ: Because he knew that law was going to make Sinestro happy. He knew that law was something Sinestro already foresaw. Sinestro pushed the right buttons. And Hal probably considered not going, and he just had to go.

The relationship is a very complex one. I think it's actually, for a hero and arguably arch-villain, I think it's probably one of the most complex ones in comics. Maybe you've got other characters out there who are interesting, but they certainly haven't been through the stages these guys have been through. Maybe a lot of that, to me, is probably more in my head than on some of the pages, but that's why I’m doing the Secret Origin – to get that on the page.

NRAMA: OK, it sounds like this “Secret Origin” story is pretty important. But let’s talk about the name. You're bringing back the idea of "Secret Origin" with this next story arc?

GJ: “Secret Origin” is a DC term. It’s a classic one that I think should be back and carefully and selectively done. If there’s a “Creeper: Secret Origin” next month, the title’s just been wasted. It’s more than the term though – Year One is great, but it’s only Year One. Just by the nature of the title, it doesn't encompass everything. This story is from the time Hal is 10 years old until the time he really accepted his role as a Green Lantern. I think a “Secret Origin” can allow for a lot more ground to be covered.

And, yes, Green Lantern: Secret Origin isn't the only one I'm going to do. I think Jeph Loeb has done some of the absolute “Secret Origin” stories at DC with Tim Sale. His Batman: The Long Halloween run, Superman: For All Seasons, those are my inspirations as well as a lot of my own pyrotechnics. Ivan Reis has done a simply incredible job and it’s so great to have him back after he exploded open with Sinestro Corps. It’s just a different story, it’s so much more grounded – at least at first – and personal in a different way.

Eddie Berganza and Adam Schlagman have really put the care into this too. The cover ideas and the kind of “painted” look to them was all Eddie’s idea and it turned out phenomenal.

NRAMA: You said you're doing another Secret Origin story besides this one in Green Lantern? In a different comic?

GJ: Eventually, I'm going to tackle another one. I want to try to bring “Secret Origins” back into the DC universe.

NRAMA: That other Secret Origin – can you tell us what comic it will be?

GJ: Hell, no!

NRAMA: [laughs] OK, but despite the fact that this interview is concentrating just on Green Lantern and not your other DC titles, it's hard to talk about the emotional spectrum and not mention that we saw a character in Action Comics last week who seemed to tap into this emotional spectrum for her powers.

GJ: Yeah. [laughs] Rainbow Girl. But not very well. She's managed to tap into a couple of colors. But she doesn't understand them. To her, it's just more for fun.

NRAMA: So we know the emotional spectrum has power even into the future.

GJ: Yeah. Where there is no Green Lantern Corps.

NRAMA: There isn't any Green Lantern Corps in the future?

GJ: Not in the 31st century.

NRAMA: So... there's nobody left from the Green Lantern Corps?

GJ: Uh... in the 31st century, you have two Green Lanterns. That's it.

NRAMA: Who are they?

GJ: One's Rond Vidar. And there's another one.

NRAMA: Uh huh.

GJ: ...

NRAMA: And are you going to tell us the other one?

GJ: No. [laughs]

NRAMA: [laughs] So I guess we're going to find out who the other one is in some upcoming story?

GJ: Yes, we will.

NRAMA: Is that something you’re writing?

GJ: Uh... maybe.

NRAMA: OK... we'll move on to another Green Lantern subject. Something about the emotional spectrum that maybe you're going to explore in more detail later, but might clarify for us here, is that it was established early on that there was a weakness to yellow for the Green Lanterns – particularly the rookies, but really anybody who couldn't overcome fear. And it was associated with Parallax being in the power battery. Right?

GJ: Yes.

NRAMA: Do Green Lantern rookies still have that weakness to fear now that Parallax isn't in the power battery any longer?

GJ: They do because Parallax has tainted the pool. They were entwined for so long. Yellow and green are so close together and so intertwined, kind of back and forth for so long, that there is still some intersection there.

NRAMA: So if there is this "weakness" relationship between the yellow and green power, is there a similar type of relationship between other colors in the spectrum?

GJ: There are certain reactions between other colors, but they're not exactly what I would call a weakness. Certain things about the energy will affect and change when they come into contact with other parts of the spectrum. But it won't necessarily react like green and yellow react.

NRAMA: So the reaction between green and yellow is unique?

GJ: Yes. It's very unique.

NRAMA: And the weakness is still traceable to Parallax having been in the power battery?

GJ: Yep. And again, a Red Lantern isn't just a Red Lantern like a Green Lantern. It's not, "Hey, I'm red." Blast! They're all different. As you saw when Laira was recruited, it's a terrible process to become a Red Lantern. It's horrible. It's not comfortable. It's violent.

NRAMA: Are we going to see anyone from earth offered these various colored rings, particularly the red ones?

GJ: Not right now. I'm obviously focused on what's happening now. I want to explore all the different aspects of it until we start to get into the War of Light. And let's wait to talk about any specifics on that. But I have it completely planned out: All of Blackest Night and the way it's going to affect our characters and the storyline.

NRAMA: From the sound of the next few issues, even the origin story you're telling in Secret Origin plays into this 2009 story of Blackest Night, doesn't it?

GJ: All of it starts to build now. Green Lantern #26-28 was the epilogue and getting the second law up and running, and getting everyone in play. And you can see the flickers of light – I call them flickers of light – but they're things in the universe that are starting to happen. Everything that's happening now will play into Blackest Night and the future and past of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps.

NRAMA: Anything else you want to tell fans about Green Lantern?

GJ: Thanks to everyone reading the book. I’m proud to be a part of one of the most unique superhero mythologies in comics.

Green Lantern, by Philip Tan

Starting with February’s Green Lantern #39, readers will get a look at Agent Orange and the greed-focused Orange Lanterns through the artwork of Philip Tan.

The artist, who won rave reviews for his work on Final Crisis: Revelations, is the latest DC artist to help design the creatures who populate the Green Lantern universe as writer Geoff Johns takes the title toward the War of Light.

Based on the idea that emotions hold power that can be harnessed -- with the Green Lanterns harnessing the central green-colored power of willpower -- the War of Light is a prophesized battle between the Green Lanterns and other factions who control various colors in the emotional spectrum. It's all a precursor to the highly anticipated Green Lantern event titled "Blackest Night," which is scheduled to take place next year, featuring Black Lanterns who are raised from the dead of Earth.

So far, the Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps titles have seen the yellow fear-based energy of the Sinestro Corps, the violet love-based energy of the Zamorans, the hate-focused power of the Red Lanterns, and a hint of what the Blue Lanterns who offer hope can do.

Various artists have helped to design the aliens who make up the colored corps (with a foundation laid by Etahn Vansciver, and now it's Tan's turn to put his stamp on the Green Lantern universe through his designs for the greed-focused power of the Orange Lanterns and their leader, Agent Orange.

Newsarama talked to Tan about how he landed the Green Lantern gig and what he's hoping to portray in the creatures who harness the power of avarice.

Newsarama: Phil, we just saw Shane Davis put his stamp on the Green Lantern universe by designing many of the Red Lanterns who populate the comic right now. Are Agent Orange and the Orange Lanterns going to be your chance to do a little design work for the Green Lantern universe?

Philip Tan: Yes, that's what is most exciting about this project. I think Agent Orange was pretty much designed in Green Lantern #25. But I get to do the fun stuff of designing all the other Orange Lanterns. While I put the finishing touches on the last issue of Final Crisis: Revelations, I've been brainstorming and doing research into what I want to do with the Orange Lanterns.

NRAMA: We're seeing some of your designs here for the first time. What can you tell us about them and why they look this way?

PT: Well, I've been talking to Geoff for a long time about the Orange Lanterns and what kind of a look we're trying to achieve with them. He really wants them to have, of course, this horrible look of being greedy, so they should look grotesque. It's not so much scary as it is just, twisted by avarice. They are the lanterns of avarice. A perfect example, if you think about it, is Gollum from Lord of the Rings. Obviously not everyone's going to look like that, but it's that grotesque look of having been possessed by greed. And it's interesting to see how even Agent Orange has been designed compared to the other Lantern colors because he's not very buff; he's a little leaner and more grotesque. His gestures will echo that as well. And it all inspires me as I design the Orange Lanterns.

NRAMA: They are very alien looking. Is there anything we should notice about these images?

PT: Well, there are things in the story that I don't want to give away. But one thing you might think about is how these creatures look like predators. A lot of these creatures are very hunting based. There are elements in their design that are based on a very believable back story about how they track down and go after their prey.

NRAMA: The creature with the wings has some type of rings on his tail?

PT: Well, again, we don't want to give away too much about the story, but you'll notice that he looks like a carcass. But it's actually a sentient creature. And the orange rings are there on his tail, appearing like they can be taken. So that would be a way to lure in his prey. You can imagine what would happen to someone who would be greedy and want to take away those rings, believing that he's dead.

NRAMA: There's another image here of a figure whose rings are on his horns atop his head. His tail looks similar to a Venus Fly Trap or something. Did he already catch something in there?

PT: [Laughs] Yes. He's part of a hunter race who weave spells, and the horn is almost like a tuning fork for the spells they cast. All these creatures I'm trying to come up with, they don't work in one way. They don't just shoot power blasts out of their hands. They don't just go punch people. Some of them cast a special magic in space, and some may hunt their prey in other ways.

NRAMA: This last one looks more humanoid?

PT: Yes, but notice that there is something not quite humanoid about it. The idea is that a humanoid creature may have been taken into the Vega System somehow, and they have been adapted over the millennia into what you see now.

NRAMA: Anything else you can tell us about these three characters?

PT: Well, again, I don't want to give too much away. You will find out so much about the Orange Lanterns in the story. But the most important thing is that they're all designed on the idea that they are creatures of avarice. And they are supposed to look alien. We haven't seen the Vega System explored before, so that gives us a lot of freedom.

NRAMA: OK, switching gears, Phil, why was working on Green Lantern something you wanted to do after Revelations?

PT: I have another project I'm doing, but it's not going to start right away. And I've been a fan of Geoff's comics for a long time, and we've talked about doing something together for awhile now. So when my schedule opened up, Geoff wanted me to do some Green Lantern.

NRAMA: So are writers fighting over you now, Phil?

PT: [Laughs] No, I wouldn't say that. I'm still a new guy in the DC fold. But this just worked out well. It didn't hurt that Eddie Berganza, my editor on Revelations, just happened to be the same editor for Green Lantern. So it turned out working well. I've talked to Geoff since this year's San Diego show. I was a big fan of his writing. And I was amazed to hear that he liked my art and he was interested in working together with me. It was a great feeling. So it worked out well.

NRAMA: You said you're a fan of Geoff's -- were you a Green Lantern fan?

PT: Honestly, I was a huge fan of his JSA stuff, and then I've been getting into his recent Superman stuff. So I hadn't really read a lot of his Green Lantern stories. I used to read Green Lantern, but not the recent ones. When I heard I might be working with him on the Green Lanterns, I started reading everything. Now, I'm a huge fan of what he's doing with Green Lantern. It's like... the way he puts it is, "Lord of the Rings set in space.” And that's something that plays to my strengths because I can design characters and I like drawing alien-looking, darker creatures.

It's also what I wanted to do next. I wanted to do something that would allow me to design characters from other worlds and galaxies and work on some of those kinds of things. I think it's very exciting.

NRAMA: As you looked back and read the issues of Green Lantern that have been done so far, what did you think of the look that's been established for the Green Lantern universe recently?

PT: Oh, it's really amazing. Ethan Vansciver and Ivan Reis have been presenting Green Lantern in ways that he hasn't been presented in a very long time, at least in my opinion. They have given it a fresh and new look. I hope that I can live up to that. I want to make sure I can support the War of Light storyline with my own unique approach to my artwork. I think my style will fit well with the Orange Lantern storyline in particular. And I hope that we really entertain people. That's probably the biggest goal I have is to tell the story well and entertain people. I couldn't be more excited about working with Geoff on this book, and I hope that excitement shows in the work.

With February's Green Lantern #39, readers will be introduced to the greed-centered Orange Lanterns created by artist Philip Tan.

As we get closer to their debut, Tan is sharing some of his sketches with Newsarama readers, detailing the backgrounds of the creatures who make up the Orange Lanterns of the Vega System.

Best known by DC readers for his just-finished work on Final Crisis: Revelations, Tan had previously honed his dark, moody style at Image Comics. Tan now becomes the latest DC artist to help design the creatures who populate the Green Lantern universe as writer Geoff Johns takes the title toward the War of Light and this year's Blackest Night event.

In a concept first revealed by Johns during the 2007 event Sinestro Corps War, the energy the Green Lanterns wield is powered by willpower, expanding upon the idea that emotions have power. Other colored energy harnessed by lanterns of light represents a spectrum of emotions. So far, the Green Lantern universe has seen the yellow fear-based energy of the Sinestro Corps, the violet love-based energy of the Zamorans, the hate-focused power of the Red Lanterns, and most recently, the hope-centered energy of the Blue Lanterns.

Next, it's time to spotlight the Orange Lanterns of greed, in a storyline named after their leader, "Agent Orange." And last time we spoke to the artist, Tan told us these creatures will have a "grotesque look of having been possessed by greed."

"There are things in the story that I don't want to give away. But one thing you might think about is how these creatures look like predators," Tan said. "A lot of these creatures are very hunting based. There are elements in their design that are based on a very believable back story about how they track down and go after prey."

As we share three more of Tan's designs, we talked to the artist again to give Green Lantern fans a taste of what's to come.

Newsarama: Phil, let's start with this worm-looking creature in that first sketch. What kind of alien is this?

Philip Tan: This Orange Lantern is creating his construct with his four tiny arms in front with the rings, much like spinning a cocoon. It's like creating weapons and traps from "threads." That's how their species lives -- how they create stuff to hunt.

NRAMA: What are those thorn-like things coming out of the back of him?

PT: The back part is like a clamp made of sharp jagged teeth. It is used to cling on to their "city." These hunting creatures live in a "colony" formed under the belly of a gigantic herbivore of their planet. The herbivore provides them warmth and liquid during the cold times. They are almost like parasitic citizens of a big living city.

NRAMA: On the second sketch, what kind of creature are we seeing?

PT: This is a smaller creature. They are amphibious beings that live in toxic swamps of their world. The two eye-like things on top of its head are decoys that shoot out a toxic substance, but wielding the orange ring, it's pretty much useless compared to the power it possesses under the orange light.

NRAMA: Last time we talked, you had a several designs of creatures that lured their prey closer somehow. Does this creature have a manner in which to lure their prey?

PT: They can read minds and are more like shapeshifters, but in a way where the body produces an image of something their prey is emotionally attached to, to lure them. Their bodies are mostly made of ooze, except the head and some limbs. The bone stuff inside the ooze-like body are remains of whatever they consumed.

NRAMA: The last one looks more humanoid. Last time we talked, you said the idea behind the human-shaped aliens from the Vega System is that humanoids had adapted over the millennia into what they are now. Is this another case of a person from a humanoid race being modified?

PT: Yes, a humanoid modified in the Vega system. It doesn't have a face but instead a big open mouth. They are creatures bred solely for war-purposes. Like battle-mages, these lady creatures emit different kinds of sounds from their mouth and use varieties of dances to create mystic effects with the sound. The hair covers many eyes that only see in the dark.

The drumbeat to this summer’s Blackest Night has begun, and nowhere is it louder than in Green Lantern Corps written by Peter Tomasi and illustrated by Patrick Gleason. Telling the tales of the other Green Lanterns – Arisa, Guy Gardner, Sodam Yat, Kyle Rayner, and dozens more, the series is DC Comics’ police procedural in space.

Most recently, the Lanterns have been involved with the Star Sapphires and the vile Sinestro Corps member Kryb, while Mongul is making noise about leading a group, and the rogue Guardian Scar is looking to start some kind of trouble with the Anti-Monitor’s body.

We spoke with Tomasi for more.

Newsarama: Peter, in Green Lantern Corps, especially recently with the Star Sapphire arc, it seems that you’ve been tasked with laying the groundwork for the coming Blackest Night and war that is coming...is that an accurate overview of what you’ve been doing – setting the pieces in
place?

Peter Tomasi: I wouldn't say I'm laying all the groundwork. A guy by the name of Geoff Johns -- you may have heard if him, he's been doing some pretty good stuff over the years -- is actually leading the charge on Blackest Night. What I'm doing is laying the groundwork for certain important elements that are going to be part of the Corps tapestry that will be woven into Blackest Night. This story is going to be massive and epic across the DCU, but obviously key elements needed to start gestating now in both Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps to help set the stage, along with both books being key to everything once the big event of 2009 hits the racks . I honestly feel that anyone interested in Blackest Night should really be picking up both GL books right now because it will definitely enrich the reading experience of Blackest Night when it hits.

NRAMA: As readers, we know that Blackest Night is inevitable – it’s coming up this summer. But how about storywise – we’ve seen a lot of factions among the various Lanterns – are the coming events that will be known as Blackest Night something that someone is pushing the players toward, or is it going to be a byproduct of all the machinations within the various factions?

PT: Both, actually, and even more. There's going to be so many wild and intense moments in this epic story, coupled with a driving force behind it all, that when it's all revealed it's gonna send readers screaming into the night with joy and horror!

NRAMA: Speaking of machinations and those who may be constructing them, let’s talk about Scar...she seems to wield an unusual amount of power among the Guardians. Why is that? Why isn’t their more opposition to her?

PT: Scar's simply stated her case in many instances that jibe with the way the Guardians think at this juncture in time due to the prophecies and such that are now before them. Scar is a master of subtle manipulation that only Ganthet and Sayd, once being members of that intimate inner circle, would have spoken truth to power to if they were still there.

NRAMA: While we’re speaking of the Guardians, there have been two new Laws written in the Book of Oa – the use of lethal force, and in #30, the forbidding of non-professional, platonic relationships among the Lanterns. In your view, are the Lanterns as a body the same as they were prior to these new laws? Clearly, the Zamorans don’t think that they are...

PT: As I mentioned in the previous answer, time and events are fluid. Everything is changing. Prophecies have come to past and the Guardians believe they are being proactive and meeting these problems head on with decisive, and in their minds, just and proper. Whether they are taking the right course of action is anybody’s guess at this moment. Only time will tell.

NRAMA: You’re juggling probably one of the largest casts of any DCU series. What’s your formula to allow the characters rotate in and out of the spotlight while the larger story moves forward?

PT: I have to say, when it comes to large casts, the story dictates who should be in the mix at certain times. I keep a cast list pasted on the side of my computer so that when I look up from deadline hell I ask myself if I have given everyone a fair shake, is there story points that certain cast members can better address organically than others. The last thing I want to do is force a character into a situation simply because they haven't had much page time. If they fit into it, then great. If not, I know I'll find a place for them to shine sooner or later.

NRAMA: Is writing a book with a large cast such as Green Lantern Corps with its many characters and viewpoints harder, easier or just different from writing a solo book such as Nightwing?

PT: Definitely harder. Because you do want to have everyone contribute and you do know that there are readers who have particular favorites, so in the back of my mind I always know I'm gonna disappoint some people, but that's the way it goes with team books.

Also, if you've read Nightwing and Green Lantern Corps, you'll see that I've stayed away from using captions most of the time when it comes to GLC. I think it's better with an ensemble book to let the dialogue and visuals do all the heavy lifting, while a book like Nightwing, with a title character, gives me the chance at internal narration that I would rather stay away from in a team book if possible.

NRAMA: Let’s touch upon some of those smaller spotlights – first off, Saarek’s mission by Scar to communicate with the corpse of the Anti-Monitor. What could the corpse of the Anti-Monitor tell anyone, anyway?

PT: Since we've still got a little ways to go before Blackest Night hits, let's just say that Saarek's mission is incredibly important to the scheme of things and will have its own set of integral ramifications.

NRAMA: Ion – what’s his larger role in the Corps? He’s moving into the spotlight coming up soon with Mongul, correct?

PT: Obviously, Sodam Yat -- according to prophecy -- has a major role to fill within the mythic nature of the Green Lantern Corps. Geoff is writing an amazing story in his book Legion of 3 Worlds with George Perez, and that prophecy is even touched upon there. But always bear in mind the definition of 'prophecy', which is simply a "prediction", like what the weatherman does every day of the week. He's gets a bunch right and misses some, too.

Also, for all you Sodam Yat fans out there, he'll have some pretty amazing powers on display in the coming months as he and Arisia make their way to Daxam to confront Mongul and the Sinestro Corps.

NRAMA: Guy and Kyle – arguably the most “relatable” for readers, yet they’ve been slightly moved to the back of the stage recently – not in clear leadership roles, but still around. Will they be moving back up into the main action soon?

PT: Well, in my mind they've never really left the main action. Yes, by degrees, the story has dictated a certain amount of stage time for Kyle and Guy, but they are still the leads in my mind, and I've made sure that something is always going on for them, especially when it comes to their personal lives. They will definitely be front and center when the veritable crapola hits the fan soon.

NRAMA: The larger Sinestro Corps – even though Sinestro was captured, they’re still a very viable and active threat. Who’s behind the driver’s wheel over there? What is their larger plan these days?

PT: Mongul is obviously planning to get his big yellow mits around the leadership role of the Sinestro Corps and build a specific game plan for them. We'll see shortly to what extent that will take place as Mongul arrives on Daxam and begins his own call to arms, and just what ramifications that will have especially since Sinestro may have something to say about someone leading his aptly named army.

NRAMA: More specifically among the Sinestro Corps, let’s talk about Kryb. Jeez man, why focus on the creepiest Corps member ever in the storyline, and in this issue? What does he gain by stealing babies, again?

PT: Why not? I really dig Kryb. And by the way, he's a she actually. Kryb is a wanna-be mom who happens to also despise everything the Green Lanterns stand for. She feels that growing up in a Lantern household is poisonous, and she will do whatever it takes to "save" these children from being infected by the "Green". She's a caring and loving being that just wants the best for her adopted youngins.

NRAMA: Coming up – this week sees the team catch up with Kryb – and what else should readers be keeping an eye out for?

PT: Aside from kick ass action in GLC #32, there's some interesting emotional developments thanks to Star Sapphire making an appearance, and this new law that the Guardians put on the Book of Oa has immediate consequences which will dramatically effect the future of the Corps from here on out.

Then in GLC #33 the “Emerald Eclipse” arc begins as all the stakes are gonna get ratcheted up as we march from there directly into Blackest Night. A lot of fires so to speak are going to ignite in “Emerald Eclipse”, especially on Daxam and Oa, and our cast of characters are going to be put through the emotional ringer. This isn't a status quo story, where all the pieces will be back in place by the end of it. Everything in the Green Lantern and DC Universe will change forever.

NRAMA: While we’ve got you – wasn’t Mongul supposed to get the Faces of Evil look in this month’s issue that focuses on Kryb?

PT: Actually, the cover that was used for early marketing was a mistake. As you can probably see now, the cover to the Faces of Evil month is actually a disturbing image of Kryb by my crazed partner in crime on the book, Patrick Gleason. But Mongul is in the issue and to answer your question, Mongul is simply just one of those complete bad-asses that is a blast to write. One of my first published stories for DC was a 36-pager in two issues of Showcase back in 1995. It was recently reprinted in a DC Universe Special: Superman #1 issue. Mongul's best played as an intelligent powerhouse with no reservations about taking life. A villain through and through, with no redemptive qualities whatsoever. I feel he's one of the DCU's best villains and I've been happy to take him out for a little spin once in awhile. He's got a nice twisted part to play in the coming months.

NRAMA: Finally - what other beats in the build up to Blackest Night can we expect to see as 2009 unfolds?

PT: The most important ones are -- hey, look at all those shiny red laser dots on my body, they look like little fishies swimming around waiting for some -- BLAMBLAMBLAMBLAMBLAM

Artist Philip Tan is sharing more of his Orange Lantern designs, but this time looks may be deceiving.

While some of the Orange Lanterns designed by Tan for his upcoming run on Green Lantern look innocent enough, as he told Newsarama last month, "there are things in the story that I don't want to give away, but one thing you might think about is how these creatures look like predators." The artist, who is best known to DC readers for his work on Final Crisis: Revelations, reveals in our interview below that even the most innocuous-looking Orange Lanterns have a way of hunting.

Beginning with next month's Green Lantern #39 by writer Geoff Johns, Tan will be filling in on the title for the "Agent Orange" storyline as regular artist Ivan Reis works ahead on future issues of Green Lantern. The Orange Lanterns utilize the energy of avarice, or greed, much like the Sinestro Corps uses the yellow energy of fear in their ring-powered corps.

Based on the idea that emotions hold power that can be harnessed -- with the Green Lanterns harnessing the central green-colored power of willpower -- the War of Light is a prophesized battle between the Green Lanterns and other factions who control various colors in the emotional spectrum, with a total of seven colors due to unite in battle. It's all a precursor to the highly anticipated Green Lantern event titled "Blackest Night," which is scheduled to take place next year, featuring Black Lanterns who are raised from the dead of Earth.

Newsarama talked to Tan about these latest designs and what it's like to work with Johns on the build-up to the War of Light.

Newsarama: Phil, you've told us before that these most of these creatures who harness the power of avarice are "hunting based." But this first one doesn't look a lot like a predator, although there are a lot of teeth there. What can you tell us about this first Orange Lantern?

Philip Tan: He definitely is one of the top predators, but this lazy hunter burrows a hole on ground and hides in there with its mouth wide open facing the sky. It is filled with earth and vegetation to camouflage itself, waiting for enough prey to pass by and get swallowed. This beast usually won't be hard to deal with by any ring bearer even with it standing over 20 feet high. But with the ring, it creates all kinds of conjured traps that weakens the opposing light. Geoff is tentatively calling him Fragulla. The first one with a name.

NRAMA: The second Orange Lantern also looks fairly harmless. Are looks deceiving? How is this a deadly Lantern too?

PT: The most deceiving of the Orange lanterns. The little fellow can split its back open to release a huge amount of slime that will just consume anything.

NRAMA: We're seeing a lot of Orange Lanterns who seem to use multiple rings to lure others. Is that something we should be noticing about Orange Lanterns in particular?

PT: Yes.

NRAMA: What can you tell us about this third creature?

PT: Probably the fiercest warrior among the Orange lanterns, but too much pride to wear another ring. Whatever he doesn't get, he destroys. A bottomless hunger for power.

NRAMA: Is that armor on his head?

PT: The armor plating on his face and neck are to protect the only vulnerable area of him.

NRAMA: To finish up this time, Phil, now that you're getting into drawing the series itself, can you tell us how it's been working with Geoff on these issues?

PT: It is really challenging trying to keep up on the designs and fleshing out of the planet and creatures in this story arc. But Geoff keeps challenging me on coming up with crazier stuff each time! And the script -- he really knows how to keep the artist's creative engine running. Just as you get two pages of slower moments, you get something exciting to draw immediately. Really great pacing for the artist schedule-wise.

DC Comics has confirmed for Newsarama that beginning in July, the monthly Green Lantern series will get a new regular penciler just as Blackest Night begins.

"The absolutely brilliant Doug Mahnke is taking over the book," said Geoff Johns, the title's writer. "Blackest Night will be its own mini-series in July, and so beginning in July, Doug Mahnke will be the regular penciler on Green Lantern. Doug is an amazing penciler. The stuff he's already done for Blackest Night #0 is just phenomenal."

Ivan Reis, who's been the Green Lantern penciler since 2006, is now the artist on the Blackest Night mini-series, working months ahead with Johns for the July launch. And as Reis told Newsarama at New York Comic Con, the last issue of Blackest Night will mark the end of his run with the Green Lantern characters, although he said his next project (still unannounced) will reunite him with Johns.

"It is so much fun to work with Geoff. And if I can work with him for 10 years, I'll do it," Reis said.

DC has provided Newsarama with artwork by Mahnke of a double-page spread that will appear in Blackest Night #0, the Free Comic Book Day issue that kicks off the publisher's summer event on May 2. While specific details of the Blackest Night event have not been released, creators involved have indicated that the story will run through the Blackest Night mini-series along with the Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps titles, with some special tie-in issues along the way, all beginning in July.

As for what Johns is doing after the end of Blackest Night, the writer said he's not going anywhere.

"I'm staying. I'll be working with Doug on the [Green Lantern] issues going forward after Blackest Night," he said.

"I've said it before, that to work with such a group of talented artists on this, like Ivan and Ethan [Van Sciver] and now Shane [Davis], and Philip [Tan] and Doug. Green Lantern's probably been one of the most fortunate books in recent history that's been blessed by so many great, talented artists," Johns said. "I've been really happy to work with them all. And to have each of them take ownership of a Corps. They've each added their own spin on it and added their own characters. Creating all these Corps and all this excitement with them – it's pretty phenomenal stuff. "

Just as we recently summarized all the news being released on the internet about the Green Lantern movie, we're taking a look at all the Green Lantern comic book news as fans have been inundated with information lately about the road to this summer's Blackest Night event.

- Eight Issues: As announced at the ComicsPRO retailing summit in Memphis last month, the Blackest Night mini-series by Green Lantern writer Geoff Johns will be a total of eight issues beginning in July. These eight issues will follow a Free Comic Book Day release on May 9th of the Blackest Night #0 prologue issue.

- Tie-ins: As Johns and Dan DiDio have both told Newsarama, the Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps titles will tell part of the story of Blackest Night along with the mini-series. Blackest Night editor Eddie Berganza told IGN this week that "ideally we're giving you complete stories in each title, but if you read them as a whole, you are getting a larger view of this threat that is spreading death throughout the universe." DC has not confirmed how many issues of Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps are involved in the event.

Berganza also announced the following Blackest Night tie-in issues:

Green Lantern #43: Just like Blackest Night #0, Green Lantern #43 will serve as a prologue issue for the mini-series, coming out in early July before Blackest Night #1. While Issue #43 is the debut issue for >new Green Lantern penciler Doug Mahnke, Johns told Newsarama the issue will also debut new "entities" representing the colored energies of the emotional spectrum (similar to Parallax for fear and Ion for willpower). "You'll see two new entities – one kind of revealed in Green Lantern #43, and another full out in Green Lantern #43. But the entities are these living creatures that are born out of this power," Johns said.

Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #1-3 - Written by Johns and Green Lantern Corps writer Peter Tomasi, these three issues in July will highlight the various colored Lantern Corps. As Johns told Newsarama last month, basic information on the Lanterns of the emotional spectrum will be in the next few issues of Green Lantern, but the Tales of the Corps series will go into "a lot more detail on a lot of these Lanterns."

Blackest Night: Batman, Blackest Night: Superman, and Blackest Night: Titans - These three-issue comics will tell up-close stories beginning in August about how the characters in the DCU react to seeing their deceased friends and/or family members rising from the dead to become Black Lanterns. Another wave of tie-in minis will follow in November and will include Blackest Night: Wonder Woman. While writers for these comics have not been named, Berganza teased that they will include Tomasi, James Robinson, Greg Rucka and J.T. Krul.

- Artists: Art by Reis and Doug Mahnke is featured in Blackest Night #0, the Free Comic Book Day preview issue.

At New York Comic Con, Reis promised Newsarama readers that he will be drawing all eight issues of the Blackest Night mini-series, plus a few other possible tie-in issues. Blackest Night will be the last work he does on Green Lantern, although Reis said he's planning another project with Johns after the event finishes. Oclair Albert will provide inks for Reis with Alex Sinclair on colors for Blackest Night.

As Reis moves off the Green Lantern title, Mahnke will take over as penciler beginning with Green Lantern #43. Mahnke will continue as the regular artist on Green Lantern during and after Blackest Night, along with Johns, who told Newsarama he's staying on the title indefinitely. Christian Alamy will be the inker on Green Lantern with Randy Major and Nei Ruffino on colors.

As we found out last week from Mahnke, the new Green Lantern artist shares his studio in Minnesota with Patrick Gleason, the artist on Green Lantern Corps, who will continue to pencil that series during Blackest Night. "If a bomb was dropped up here on North Branch, Minn., that would wipe out the team," Mahnke joked. Providing inks on Green Lantern Corps will be Rebecca Buchman, with colors by Major and Ruffino.

- Black Lanterns: Fans got their first glimpse of some Black Lanterns designed by artist Ethan Van Sciver as they hit the internet this week. On DC's newSource blog, the publisher released images of two characters who will apparently rise from the dead to serve as Black Lanterns during Blackest Night. As Van Sciver told Newsarama in October, he worked with Johns and editors to "compile a list of specific DC superheroes and supervillains who have assumed room temperature," and was "assigning a new look to each of them." Artists Ivan Reis and Joe Prado told Newsarama in February that they are also designing Black Lanterns for the storyline. (Spoiler: The two teaser images of Black Lanterns released this week depict Earth-2 Superman and Aquaman as zombie-looking Lanterns. Of course, E-2 Superman as a Black Lantern was spoiled awhile ago when Blackest Night action figure previews were released.)

Other Lanterns: Based on the idea that emotions have energy that can be harnessed with power rings – with the Green Lanterns controlling the central, green-colored energy of willpower – the Green Lantern titles have been revealing the various colors of the emotional spectrum and their ring-wearing corps for awhile now. To date, readers of Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps have seen the Red Lanterns, who wield the power of hate; the Sinestro Corps members, who use the energy of fear; the Violet Lanterns who use love; and the spiritually driven Blue Lanterns of hope who support the Green Lanterns' energy of willpower. Johns told Newsarama of the yet-unseen wielders of the compassion-driven indigo energy: "I've been very careful with indigo because they're not what everyone expects, and they act very differently than what everyone expects. They will be introduced within Blackest Night. And they're actually called the Indigo Tribe. You'll see a little glimpse of them in Blackest Night #0, the Free Comic Book Day comic we're doing, but a very little glimpse."

And beginning next week, Philip Tan will debut as artist on Green Lantern for the four-issue Agent Orange story arc. The story will introduce the Orange Lanterns, focusing on the leader Larfleeze. The stories in both Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps will build toward this summer's event over the next four months, Johns said, and "as the books get closer to Blackest Night, there will be more threads zipping between the books."

Upcoming Green Lantern artist Phillip Tan has been providing Newsarama with looks at his Orange Lantern designs over the past couple of months, but what about the title's titular hero(es)?

Glad you asked. Tan provided us with a spread of the Green Lantern Corps from Green Lantern #40, due in comic book shops in May.

"There are a lot of two-page spreads in issue #39, but this is the first time I got to draw all the Green Lanterns," Tan said of the image. "It's the one where I finally got to draw that classic image of the Green Lanterns and everyone together on a spread.

"Hal is the centerpiece, obviously, and you try to give your audience something exciting visually when drawing him. So I just worked with him as the focal point and went from there. These were really fun pages to draw and work on. It's the fan in me that really wanted to draw these Lanterns and make this work with what Geoff [Johns] was trying to achieve in the story."

"Agent Orange" the story arc that Tan is illustrating begins in next week's Green Lantern #39.

The cover is illustrated by Ivan Reis, and has many long-time Green Lantern fans have speculated, while Black Hand has been shown to be the prime mover behind the start of Blackest Night, and the corpse of the Anti-Monitor is somehow playing a role, the screaming skull seems to suggest that Nekron (first appearance in Tales of the Green Lantern Corps #2 in 1981) – who has been shown to raise the dead before – will play a major role in the storyline.

Going deeper into the realm of pure speculation, Nekron is in line with the other ring colors, as the major newly revealed Lanterns have established figures that have played a role in the larger mythology.

As the Green Lantern comics get closer to Blackest Night, the whole DC Universe is becoming further embroiled in the prophesized "War of Light."

At the center of this war is the concept that emotions hold power, and that the energy of those emotions can be harnessed by ring-wearing "lanterns." Each of these seven distinct emotions have a color associated with them, so when a "lantern" wields the energy of hate, that power manifests as red, or when a lantern wield the energy of hope, that power manifests as blue.

The concept came from the mind of Geoff Johns, the writer on Green Lantern since he relaunched the comic in 2005, soon after bringing Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps back to life in Green Lantern: Rebirth. As he developed this idea, his collaborator was then-Green Lantern artist Ethan Van Sciver.

Along with the colors associated with emotions are the symbols – usually worn on the chest of those Lanterns who wield the emotion's energy.

In the first of a two-part interview with Van Sciver about the origins of these concepts, we talked to the artist about how he designed these symbols that have become so popular that it's hard to walk through a comic book convention without running into someone wearing it on his chest.

Newsarama: Geoff told us on Newsarama recently that Graphitti Designs kept selling out of the various colored Lantern symbol shirts at New York Comic Con. How does it feel to see people at conventions walking around wearing these symbols you designed?

Ethan Van Sciver: I always see people wearing the Red Lantern shirt, which makes me happy. Because I'm diabolical, and I want everybody to wear my symbol of hatred and rage. And they're volunteering to wear it!

And also, the yellow lantern shirt – the Sinestro Corps symbol – is very popular. I don't see a lot of compassion T-shirts being worn. I don't see a lot of men wearing the Violet Lantern shirts – the symbol of love.

NRAMA: Those are probably more popular among women.

EVS: Yeah, but why are they meant for women? You know, from now on, I'm going to wear the Violet Lantern T-shirt at conventions, just to let everyone know where I stand. Everybody knows that I am all about love.

NRAMA: Like John Lennon said, right? It's all you need.

EVS: Yes. Seriously. John Lennon's gone now and I may have to fill in for him in a lot of respects. I am all about love, peace and understanding.

NRAMA: Let's talk about the symbols you designed. Can you tell us a little about how you designed them?

EVS: Sure. I mean, the one thing they all have in common, I'm sure almost everyone has noticed by now that there is a ring in the center. There is a circle. And that means something. And that something will be addressed in Blackest Night.

NRAMA: There's more of a meaning to it than just that they all wear rings?

EVS: Absolutely. I think that it's safe to say even the idea of wearing a ring comes from somewhere and means something. There's a lot of symbolism in the Green Lantern mythos that just... you know, it's almost religious. I love it. I think it's neat.

And you know, these symbols are only there to make you feel a certain way. It's not that there's necessarily a direct meaning to the way I put the lines down inside that little white circle. In that sense, the only really important thing is that it all looked natural, it all looked like something that, if you've been reading Green Lantern for years, it may evoke something that you've already seen.

NRAMA: Since you're all about "love," we'll save that for last. What can you tell us about the Red Lantern symbol of hate?

EVS: With the Red Lantern symbol, I poked around a little bit for different symbols in the DC Universe, and I loved the Manhunters from Geoff's first story arc on Green Lantern, so I took the little lines from their chest, and I put the little circle in between them. That doesn't actually have any big meaning behind it or anything. But I liked the way it looked. It looked mean. It looked dark. So thus is became the Red Lantern symbol.

NRAMA: How about the Orange Lantern symbol, which we're seeing in the current story arc. Is that a little fat guy?

EVS: [laughs] It's a self-portrait! No. Well, yes. But let's talk first about the Indigo Lantern symbol.

NRAMA: The Indigo Symbol has a circle with arrows.

EVS: Right. And they're pointing outward from the top and bottom. So it ends up making a lantern shape, but the little triangular shapes point outward, so it's a giving kind of suggestion.

So with the Orange Lanterns, which are obviously going to be the opposite of the Indigo Lanterns, I just kind of reversed that so that the arrows were pointing inward, and then I broke it a little bit so it would kind of suggest a person. You know, a singular kind of "me." It's all about "me" – an individual rather than something more universal. And that's where that symbol came from. It's no accident that it looks like a little devil. It's intentional. [laughs]

NRAMA: I think we've talked pretty extensively before about the Sinestro Corps symbol. It's based somewhat on the Parallax symbol, right? Since Parallax is the entity for fear, it comes from the Parallax costume.

EVS: Sure. The original design for Parallax created by Darryl Banks inspired that Sinestro Corps symbol. I was just trying to lift the motif from something that already existed and that we were familiar with. It's a very loose, sketchy symbol pulled off the Parallax design.

NRAMA: And the opposite of that symbol of fear is the symbol for hope. Is that why the symbols for those two look somewhat similar?

EVS: Yeah. The idea was to invert that Sinestro Corps symbol to create the opposite. Hope. I tried to have them all be the opposite of their counterpart on the other end of the spectrum.

A lot of people have said since that the Blue Lantern symbol kind of looks like one of the power batteries in profile, which I hadn't realized but I see it now. It looks great. I'm probably most happy with the blue and yellow symbols because I think they're really neat.

Again, these symbols don't necessarily mean anything. These symbols have existed for countless, countless, billions of years ago since the creation of emotion. So, for example, when fear was devised and fear was created and Parallax was born, that symbol was created by the very first beings to know what fear was. It was drawn on cave walls. I mean, you can go back to Green Lantern: Rebirth and see very primitive creatures drawing very primitive Parallax shapes on cave walls. It's always existed. They are as old as human emotion itself.

ENLARGE IMAGE NRAMA: So we need to finish with the symbol for love, which is based on the Star Sapphires, right?

EVS: Yeah. I'm not exactly thrilled with that one because it is so dissimilar to everything else. I guess I probably would have liked to have gone and done some sort of reversal of the Red Lantern symbol. But my attitude was, and the rule book I set up for myself was that, wherever something already existed, use that. And so, since the Star Sapphires already had this kind of star shape associated with them, the answer was just to poke a hole in it like a doughnut and call it the Violet Lantern symbol. To me, it looks like the odd man out. But it doesn't matter because it's natural. It's organic. It was there to begin with.

NRAMA: What about the Black Lantern symbol? Was that your creation?

EVS: Well, it was my decision to use it. But that's the symbol that Black Hand uses on his uniform – his newly designed uniform. So the credit would go to either Geoff Johns or Peter Tomasi or somebody. I really like his new costume design, but I didn't design that. I was assigned to design a Black Lantern symbol, and I thought, why? Let's just use this and keep everything consistent. And everyone agreed.

Since today marks the release of Blackest Night #1, we pulled together a simple list – well, as simple as humanly possible in the world of comics – to help you prepare.

It's not necessarily a complete list, as there is always more to know about the vast cosmic universe of the Green Lanterns – not to mention the rest of the DCU affected by Blackest Night – but it should get you started.

1) The Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic police force. And these Earth men were chosen to be a part of it. According to writer Geoff Johns, this is all you really need to know. You can stop here. But if you're one of those completists who loves researching all the details, read on.

2) The Guardians of the Universe are not necessarily the good guys. Although they lead the Green Lantern Corps, who usually fight as a force for good, the little blue powerful guys called the Guardians have been more than a little misguided lately. For example, their homeworld, Oa, was ravaged by a group of rioting prisoners, so they decided to just start brutally killing the prisoners. And they've done a bunch of other stupid stuff that would make an ethics commission explode in fury. They claim they're trying to prevent war, but like the actions of any power-hungry idiots in an epic story, all the Guardians' decisions seem to only fan the flames, and Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner are starting to notice.

3) Black Hand is one creepy mofo. If you didn't pick up Green Lantern #43 yet, we'll avoid spoilers here, but the specific origin of the Black Hand is contained within. And while his few appearances in past issues of Green Lantern haven't showcased much that is remarkable about the character, he's now been established as a disturbing villain who's been obsessed with death from an early age, sleeping among corpses. After he is revived by Scar (see #4 below) with a black ring, he's told that he's the embodiment of the black power, and he starts digging up Batman's body, beginning the road to Blackest Night.

4) Scar and the Anti-Monitor have what Hollywood would call an "interesting relationship." Scar is one of the Guardians. The Anti-Monitor is among the biggest, baddest villains in the DCU. In Sinestro Corps, he smacked her around. Now she serves somebody who locked him up and is drawing power from him. Sound complicated? Not really. The simple version is that the Anti-Montior's body powers the big black lantern for the Black Lantern Corps. And the first ring for the Black Lanterns was regurgitated by Scar. The two of them serve the dark power that drives the Black Lanterns. What role they play in Blackest Night, and whether they live happily ever after, remains to be seen. But Scar's been a key player as she manipulated her fellow Guardians to take actions that would spiral the universe toward war.

5) Anyone who's dead can be a black lantern. Yes, that refers to your long-gone favorites, Titans fans. Or Dibny fans. Or even Green Lantern fans who have been yearning for a return of characters like Ch'p and Jade. You could see anyone.

To give you an idea of the scope, here's an at least partial list of a few of the formerly dead characters who have either shown up on Blackest Night covers, in solicitations, in teases, or in interviews with the folks at DC as suspected Black Lanterns, besides the already established members Scar and Black Hand:

Martian Manhunter
Ronnie Raymond (Firestorm)
Psycho-Pirate
Terra
Boston Brand (Deadman)
Earth-2 Superman
Arthur Curry (Aquaman)
George Harkness (Captain Boomerang)
Mirror Master
Blue Beetle
Jade
Ralph Dibny (Elongated Man)
Sue Dibny
Jean Loring
The Flying Graysons (John & Mary)
Hank Hall (Hawk)
Pantha
Wildebeest
Arthur Light (Dr. Light)
Jack Drake
Solomon Grundy
Alexander Luthor
Manitou Raven
Robert Long
Katma Tui
Fentara
Ke'Haan
Bzzd
Question
Maxwell Lord
Ted Kord
Al Pratt
Ch'p
Gallius Zed
Jack T. Chance
Roy Lincoln (Human Bomb)
Wesley Dodds (Sandman)
Jonathan Kent
Batman
Air Wave (Larry Jordan)

Notice one of your favorites? As you can see, it looks like ANY dead character could rise from the dead, wearing a black ring, and become a living zombie serving as a Black Lantern.

6) It's about your emotions, baby. As Geoff Johns told us earlier this month, "The real central theme in this series is emotion. This entire series is about emotion. It's about conflicting emotion, and changing emotion, and dealing with emotion. What emotion means, what it is."

With any other series, the writer's statement would merely refer to the emotions his characters will experience, but with Green Lantern it goes one step further. The Green Lantern corps, which uses willpower to wield the energy of its green rings, is not the only corps in the cosmic neighborhood. There are seven corps who use some type of emotion to fire energy from their rings, and there are seven corresponding colors:

Red = Hate
Orange = Avarice
Yellow = Fear
Green = Willpower
Blue = Hope
Indigo = Compassion
Violet = Love

Each of the seven emotions has an "embodiment" of their power, and each has a corps of at least one being wearing the colored ring. It should be noted, Willpower isn't an "emotion" but rather what remains when emotion has been cast aside, as was the original goal of the Guardians.

7) The leaders of each of the corps are:

Hate = Atrocitus - A big, mean red dude who has it out for the Green Lantern Corps for once imprisoning him, and hates Sinestro in particular.

Avarice = Larfleeze, or "Agent Orange" - A grotesque, whiny, long isolated creature who wants everything and more, but now wants a blue ring in particular.

Fear = Sinestro, a well-established Green Lantern villain - While technically, Sinestro has to fight Mongul for control of the Sinestro Corps of fear, come on... the corps has his name, so we're calling him the leader. He once had a mentoring relationship with Hal Jordan, and his daughter is a Green Lantern named Soranik Natu who is a love interest of Kyle Rayner.

Willpower = Guardians of the Universe. (See #2.)

Hope = Ganthet and Sayd - Two former Guardians of the Universe members that got sick and tired of their brethren and decided to take matters into their own hands to save the universe, creating a blue-color corps of hope. As a side note, the hope rings can't fire energy on their own, but act in conjunction with the green rings of willpower.

Compassion = Indigo-1 - A character we know absolutely nothing about, but her staff-carrying, primitive-looking corps of compassion is said to be a lot different and more powerful than we expect.

Love = Zamarons - Once Oans like the Guardians of the Universe, this group left the planet due to the decision to suppress their emotions. The Zamorans decided to instead embrace emotions and later were the driving force behind the Star Sapphires who wield the power of love.

8) Green Lantern John Stewart and Star Sapphire Yrra Cynril have a history. He failed to save a planet called Xanshi, and at one time, the guilt almost destroyed him. Xanshi was also the homeworld of the young Yrra Cynril, who was luckily off-planet when it was destroyed, but lost everyone she loved. After a stint as a villain named Fatality on earth and a Sinestro Corps member, the character has now decided to turn over a new leaf and become a lantern of love, wearing a skimpy little Star Sapphire costume and kissing John Stewart, encouraging him to forgive himself because she already has.

9) Green Lantern Hal Jordan and sometimes-Star Sapphire Carol Ferris have a history. A long one, actually, tracing all the way back to their childhoods together. When Hal Jordan returned from the dead, Carol was married to someone else. Hal started a relationship with a fellow pilot, Cowgirl. But Carol has recently gotten a divorce, so things may get interesting. Whether she becomes a Star Sapphire again remains to be seen, but Johns has indicated she's involved in this story.

10) Yes, there are tie-ins. But according to Johns, it is possible to only read Blackest Night and understand what is happening. That said, this entire article is a list for completists, so you're going to get everything anyway. Here's your checklist through October, and click here for the cost report so far:

This morning on DCU Blog The Source, DC Entertainment "kicked off 2010 with some major news." The follow-up to Blackest Night, as some deduced, is simply called Brightest Day.

Starting in April (just after the conclusion of Blackest Night in March) with an issue #0, the series will be 26 issues long and ship biweekly. Writers Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi, who currently write the two Green Lantern series, will be writing the new book. Fernando Pasarin will do the art for issue #0, but no regular artist was announced on the main series as yet; it will however have multiple art teams to facilitate the every-other-week schedule. It was heavily implied that Johns and Tomasi will also continue writing Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps, respectively, and that both books will tie-in to the series.

More news on Brightest Day will be coming later today. This also kicks off another week of DCU Announcements, so stay tuned all week long for more on DCU 2010.

On DCU Blog The Source today, the Greg Horn variant cover to Green Lantern Corps #46 was revealed by Editor Adam Schlagman. The cover features a major new Black Lantern, the villain that started the cycle of mega-Crises in the DC Multiverse, and arguably the ultimate evil of the DCU.

As Schlagman said, "Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason" found a way to "make things worse for our Emerald Warriors" by having the Anti-Monitor, the villain at the center of Crisis on Infinite Earths return with a black ring. Find out what new tricks this villain has up his sleeve with his new power ring in GLC #46.

The events of Blackest Night have affected a lot of characters in the DCU, but the Green Lantern Universe is feeling the changes all the way to the creative teams and titles.

Beginning in May, writer Tony Bedard takes over Green Lantern Corps with Ardian Syaf on art, making way for current GLC writer Peter Tomasi to launch a new Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors comic in August, while Geoff Johns continues with Doug Mahnke on Green Lantern.

Bedard, who already deals with some of DC's space heroes in R.E.B.E.L.S., will begin writing Green Lantern Corps as the title revises its cast after the events of Blackest Night. Corps members Kyle Rayner and John Stewart will be joined by Ganthet, the former Guardian, to round out the three lead characters.

In the first of a series of articles on the titles most affected by the wake of Blackest Night, Newsarama spoke with the writer to find out more about Green Lantern Corps and what comes next.

Newsarama: Tony, let's start with the big surprise in Blackest Night for the Green Lantern Corps: What effect will Jade's return have on Kyle and Soranik Natu? And what role might Jade play in future GLC stories?

Tony Bedard: We'll begin to explore the effect of Jade's return in issue #49, but the ultimate resolution of that awkward triangle will take awhile to play out. To be honest, I'm not sure yet which way Kyle will go. Maybe he doesn't get either girl. I've loved most of these characters for years, but writing them is something else entirely and I'm still weighing my options at this point. I don't anticipate Jade becoming a regular cast member in GLC, but I definitely do plan to pursue this plot thread to the end.

Nrama: As we head toward the launch of Emerald Warriors, what insight can you give us into the premise behind having the two books? Is there a story reason for there being two separate groups, and are you able to share some thoughts behind it?

Bedard: I wasn't in on the actual decision, but I assume some very wise person at DC took a look their hottest property and asked if it would support another book. But unlike some overexposed or strip-mined titles, the Green Lantern concept is so rife with possibilities that I think it easily supports a new monthly. The thing that attracted me to Green Lantern in the first place wasn't so much Hal or Kyle or any individual, but the idea that there are so many of these dudes from so many different cultures. The Green Lantern Corps is an inexhaustible wellspring of stories.

Nrama: Stepping back a bit from the story, what will be the difference between Emerald Warriors and GLC from a style perspective? Will they have a different overall feel to them?

Bedard: it's still early days yet, and Emerald Warriors is still taking shape (and so is my Green Lantern Corps for that matter!). I would anticipate the differences will reflect the differences in Pete and I. Pete excels at hard-nosed characters and war stories and I expect Emerald Warriors will have a very proactive take-no-prisoners feel. I mean, with Guy Gardner anchoring the book, what else would you expect?

I'm more focused on playing up the grandeur and diversity of the Corps. I might play up the Cop aspect more than the Soldier aspect, if that makes sense. But both Pete and I also follow Geoff's cue, so whatever differences the GL series may have in tone, certain core aspects of Green Lantern's success will remain consistent. We'll all be telling widescreen, epic tales in the Mighty Mogo Manner!

Nrama: You'll be concentrating on just two of the Earth Green Lanterns while Guy Gardner moves to Emerald Warriors. Is the desire to better share the spotlight between those two characters in GLC? And what will we learn about the two of them as you take over the comic?

Bedard: Kyle Rayner and John Stewart will play lead roles in Green Lantern Corps, along with Ganthet, Soranik Natu, and a couple of others. I'm quite fond of Kyle from my days as an editor on Grant Morrison's JLA run. He has this everyman quality that really sets him apart from other Green Lanterns. John is more the strong silent type, and showing how deep his still waters run will be a challenge. But I think the fact that he is both an architect and a Marine sniper gives him a rich inner conflict between his creative and destructive natures.

Nrama: What's Ganthet's role in the book? And what's he like? Is he still going to be the soothing, knowledgeable presence he's been in the past, or will we see something new from him?

Bedard: Ganthet acted as both a Green Lantern and a Blue Lantern through the course of Blackest Night. As I pick up the reins on GLC, Ganthet makes a decision to forsake his status as a Guardian and continue operating as a Lantern. There is a big reason he's doing this, and it will become clearer in the coming year, but for now we'll get to enjoy watching him explore his newly reawakened emotions.

Nrama: As Ganthet explores those emotions, will Sayd's relationship with Ganthet be explored? And will her role as the guardian for Larfleeze come into play?

Bedard: This is the other relationship I really want to explore, particularly because Ganthet's emotional development is so important to Green Lantern Corps. I need to talk it through with Geoff, but we'll certainly want to delve into this very messed-up situation. I mean, Sayd is doing the honorable thing, living up to her promise to Larfleeze, and Ganthet tries to pretend he understands and respects her decision, but it's a living hell for both of them. Ganthet will reach a breaking point over it before long.

Nrama: How does Ganthet interact with Kyle and John in the comic?

Bedard: Ganthet, John and Kyle are the "power trio" or Corps. Whatever the tale or story arc, we will always focus on these three, with the rest of the Corps enriching the background. Ganthet's interactions with them have changed in that he is now a peer instead of a superior, but John and Kyle are both pretty fond of the World's Oldest Rookie.

Nrama: Who are the other supporting characters in the book going to be?

Bedard: Kyle's new girlfriend Soranik Natu will be a regular cast member – assuming she can avoid the fate of Kyle's ex-girlfriends, that is! And we'll also be joined by Hannu, the big stony Lantern who hates to use his ring because his race views relying on a weapon as an act of weakness. And there will be one more regular cast member who I won't yet reveal because it's a story point in the first story arc.

Nrama: Did you pick the supporting cast?

Bedard: I was given the top three characters but had a lot of freedom picking the supporting cast. I'm very happy with this lineup, and I feel very free to walk through any of the other Lanterns. I really want to keep showing how cool it is that the Corps is so unbelievably diverse.

Nrama: What's it been like working with Ardian Syaf? What do you think he'll bring to this comic that will give it a unique look?

Bedard: It's my first time working with Ardian, but his stuff has been outstanding so far. He has a really detailed, dynamic style that reminds me of Andy Kubert with shades of Bryan Hitch and John Buscema in there.

Nrama: Now that you're writing both titles, is there a possibility we'll see the Green Lantern Corps interact with R.E.B.E.L.S. again?

Bedard: We will see some Green Lantern action in R.E.B.E.L.S., especially with the rookie Lanterns assigned to the newly reopened Vega Sector! They will debut very soon in R.E.B.E.L.S., and we'll see the Green Lantern Corps knock heads with L.E.G.I.O.N. as it continues to expand.

Nrama: Let's talk about your first storyline. What story will you be telling in your first few issues of Green Lantern Corps?

ENLARGE Bedard: The opening story arc will focus on the Alpha-Lanterns. They're up to something creepy and huge and there is a familiar hand behind their revolt, which we'll reveal in issue #50. By the end of this arc, we'll have our main cast in place.

Nrama: Monday's solicitations have revealed that Cyborg Superman is returning in Green Lantern Corps #50 in July. Anything you can tell us about what his motivation is now or what he's planning?

Bedard: Same motivation (to end his miserable existence); new master plan. I don't want to reveal too much, but I do hope to throw Hank Henshaw a curve-ball this time around, and make this a really memorable appearance for him.

Nrama: Then to finish up, Tony, can you give us a few hints about what comes further down the line for Green Lantern Corps?

Bedard: I'm planning a tale about the guy who forged Sinestro's ring. He thought he'd be a hero of the Qwardian people, but Sinestro turned out to be nothing but bad news for Qward, leaving the Weaponer with quite an axe to grind.

Beyond that, I have some other ideas, but there are also things afoot that affect all three GL titles. We may not be marching in lockstep the way the books have operated through Blackest Night, but we will continue to have big overarching events that periodically affect all three books.
