Image Comics has provided The Continuum a preview of Image Comics Future Shock, the Free Comic Book Day offering that includes a four-page look at a major event in Witchblade.
The Top Cow title hits #100 in July. Writer Ron Marz will bridge the gap between the old and new, with a story to be drawn primarily by two artists. Outgoing artist Mike Choi, who has been with the book since #80, passes the torch to new artist Adriana Melo. In addition, guest artists including Marc Silvestri, Billy Tan, Randy Green and Christian Gossett will also contribute pages.
Marz promises major events that will shake the title's status quo.
"The recent 10th Anniversary issue in Witchblade #92 was really about the Witchblade's past, finally revealing where it came from and giving a glimpse of the past bearers," Marz said. "Issue #100 is very much about looking forward, about the future of the Witchblade and the future of Sara Pezzini. By the time the readers get to the last page of #100, we'll have paid off plot threads that have been building since I first took over the book, and laid the groundwork for what's to come in the next year. And I guarantee the next year is going to be the most turbulent year this book has ever had."
Witchblade #100 will be 48 pages, with a $4.99 cover price. Four regular covers will be available, with art from Marc Silvestri, Michael Turner, Mike Choi, and an "Anime" version based on the original Witchblade anime developed by Gonzo Animation now showing on Japanese TV. A fifth incentive cover from Dawn artist Joseph Michael Linsner will also be available.
"One hundred has that special ring to it of something that matters, doesn't it?" said Top Cow CEO Marc Silvestri. "Like the 100th episode of a favorite TV show or a beloved relative reaching that 100th birthday. Big chunks of time are measured by centuries tied up in neat 100-year bundles. Notable moments in our history are often referenced by what 100-year span those moments occurred in. One hundred will always have some meaning, some history, some importance behind it.
"For us over at Top Cow, celebrating 100 issues of our iconic character means we've accomplished longevity, that despite the odds we're still here and still doing what we love. For the character herself, 100 means a depth and substance and an almost tangible feeling of being real that only time can bring.
"For the reader, 100 issues means a long relationship with a character they've grown to love and understand and have a real empathy for. The best of those characters have a strange and wonderful way of returning that same love, understanding and empathy to the reader. And the enduring quality of Sara and the Witchblade, is the ability to do just that. This enduring quality is thanks to all the talented writers and artists who've given her life, and all the fans who've followed her adventures, and suffered in her pains, and relished in her joys. That is why Witchblade is turning 100. And that is why she's special."

If all goes to plan, his will be the version of Witchblade people will both see for the next three years, and ideally, remember fondly in years to come. Who’s he? Stjepan Sejic.
Top Cow today announced that it has locked in the Croatian artist for a 34 issue run on Witchblade, from issue #116 through #150 – that would start early next year, and wrap up in right around the end of 2010.
Yeah. Apparently, they’re serious.
But before we get into the nitty gritty, let’s give the guy a little respect, and start this off with a definitive way to pronounce his name.
“Our best, informed theoretical pronunciation of his name goes like this: ‘Stee-pan Say-itch,’” said Filiip Sablik, Top Cow’s Vice President of Marketing and Sales. “But our goal is to have a different way of pronouncing his name at every show we go to – although I think we’re slowing down and settling on ‘Croatian Sensation,’ to be honest.”
So what went into signing an artist for a specific book for such a substantial run? Basically, the desire for stability and identity.
“We haven’t really had an artistic identity on Witchblade since Mike Choi left the book,” Rob Levin, Top Cow VP of Editorial told Newsarama. “We brought on Adriano Melo to do a nice long run and tackle it like Mike did, since Mike’s run gave the book some stability and strength. But Adriano couldn’t deliver on a monthly schedule, and we ended up a little lost again. We knew we needed a high caliber person on the book, and Stjepan was there. As we were working more and more with him, and gear up for First Born, we just saw that there was so much creative energy coming from him, and that he was just more of a powerhouse than we thought original. I think he’s one of the bets artists working today, and can deliver at a steady pace, so he’s committed to the run – from #116 to #150 – 34 issues. When he completes that, we’ll have the longest run of Witchblade ever by a single artist.”
Sablik agreed. “Yeah, what really sealed it was when we started seeing the pages for First Born. We got really excited about what he was doing, and saw the potential he had. One of the things that Matt Hawkins has said that, in the past, Top Cow has been known for taking art in our books in new directions with guys like Mike Turner and David Finch. Those two, largely, were our first generation of the Top Cow style and the Top Cow look, and I think that Stjepan really brings something new to the table – a new artistic look for our flagship title. It’ll be a new era of Witchblade.”
Both Sablik and Levin are firmly convinced that Sejic will be able to continue to meet his deadlines, something that some fans already have a hard time believing, given the painted art.
“Generally, painted work is much slower than pencils and inks, but Stjepan has come up with his own process – he even does tutorials online where you can see that he’s doing nothing differently,” Levin said. “He’s laying down colors and the flat shapes, and building it up from there to result in the finished product, but he’s doing it all in Photoshop. But yeah – he can turn things around to stay on a monthly schedule and the quality is just, frankly, shocking. He’s turned some things around super-quickly – and I’m not going to say what – on tight deadlines that I’ve checked for fan response, and no one even noticed.”
Sablik: “And if you look at his sketch work and his developmental work, you can see that he really does think like a painter. A lot of guys that you see do painted work in comics are still coming from the perspective that the line work comes first, and then you go in over top. Stjepan really paints in light and color, and then shapes and then brings the detail out at the very end.”
So – if half the creative team is locked in, what about the other half? Will Witchblade writer Ron Marz be calling the series home through the end of 2010?
“Assuming that Ron doesn’t have a nervous breakdown, Ron is along for the ride,” Levin said. “We don’t have every issue plotted out through issue #150, but Ron and Stjepan have been working together really closely to plan out what’s beyond what’s already been set. So, I know that the two of them really want to work together on the book, and they’re both committed to it, and we’re committed to keeping that team together as long as we can.
“Likewise, with Phil Hester and Michael Broussard coming in on The Darkness – we’re going to try and lock them in for a nice, long run as well. So if everything goes as panned, we’ll have two flagship books coming out on a regular basis that will show people month-in, month-out the best that we have to offer.”

Back in Witchblade #103 Sara Pezzini, the modern-day bearer of the Witchblade gave it up...well, gave part of it up, to Danielle Baptiste. Transference of powers, right? A staple of comic book characters where a legacy is passed on to another.
Well, not quite so simple.
While Dani has wielded her portion of the Witchblade since (the series is currently on issue #121) Sara has remained in the background, as a large chunk of the storyline focuses on her and her new baby (born in the First Born event, collected in the Witchblade volume 5 trade). Apparently, there’s a battle a ‘brewin’.
Beginning in issue #125, Ron Marz and artist Stjepan Sejic will tell the six part “War of the Witchblade,” which will show just what happens when you split the Witchblade between two bearers. The covers at right are to Witchblade #125 and are by Chris Bachalo.
“The story runs from #125-#130 by the end of it, we might have one wielder of the Witchblade again...or we might have no wielder of the Witchblade,” Marz told Newsarama . “Dani and Sara each have what’s most easily described as ‘half’ of the Witchblade right now, but since the Witchblade is best explained as a balance between the dark and the light, the half is split along dark and light lines. We haven’t seen much of that, but there have been hints, and the bearers – Dani and Sara will start to go more in those directions.”
Marz said that (thanks in part to the intro page in the front of each issue) the story of the “War of the Witchblade” will be entirely self-contained in Witchblade, and not bleed out into other Top Cow series.
“It will be pretty well contained in our book – this is a Witchblade story,” Marz said. “It’s not one of these things that crosses over into every other book in the universe. It’s a big-deal Witchblade story, so we’re containing it in the Witchblade title.”
Pressed for details, Marz declined specifics, but did explain where each of the bearers are found at the beginning of the storyline:
“Sara is still getting used to being a mom. She had her baby in First Born, and that remains an ongoing aspect of the series – we didn’t do the whole, ‘Hey, let’s have a baby!’ and then six issues later, have it adopted or whisked into a different time, or something like that. So the baby is still a big part of the series, and we’re playing that straight. A new baby forces you to adjust, and Sara is going through that process while still retaining her job as a police detective.
“Dani is still adjusting to the fact that she has the Witchblade. This is an on-the-job training situation for her. She doesn’t know what she’s doing with it, or where it’s going to take her life, so it’s very much up to her to figure out what she’s going to do with this thing, and maybe, in the long run, whether or not she even wants this thing. She’s taken on the responsibility so far, but maybe at some point...enough’s enough.”
And of course, as history has shown, where the Witchblade is involved, there are other interested parties looking to get their hands on it...or rather, it’s hand on them.
“There are always third parties, and in this case, if you were a third party that wanted the Witchblade, wouldn’t it be easier to take it from the rookie than the hardass NYPD detective? So yeah, that’s an aspect of the story too. Sara knows a lot more about what she’s doing with the Witchblade – Dani’s a lot more vulnerable. I’m not saying that Dani’s going to lose the Witchblade or that Sara is going to keep it, but at the end of the story, we’re going to have a new status quo.”
