SINGAPORE: Out with the paper and in with the radio frequency tags.

HDB residents with season parking tickets will have them replaced with radio frequency identification tags within a year.

The car parks among the first to be under the tag scheme are in Ang Mo Kio, Balestier, Pasir Ris and Sembawang.

The tag is displayed on the same place as the paper discs on the vehicle's windscreen.

The tag stores a vehicle's identifying number, and parking enforcement officers can scan for the number using handheld scanners.

The number is associated with information about the vehicle, such as its licence plate number and season parking ticket validity.

Parking ticket holders will be notified by post when the tag scheme is implemented at their car parks.

New season ticket applicants will get the tags when they apply for a season ticket.

The scheme is being implemented after a successful trial in April 2005. - CNA/ir

Unneccessary moves. Just making the job more easier for the officers only :( What if accidentally the owner lost the tag, can't even retrieve it back and still need to buy a new ticket just for the sake of getting the tag only :|

Bad news for the drivers. They can't cheat 1 or 2 hrs on the tickets liao in future :|

it makes 'em more efficient, thus they need only to hire fewer officers... long term wise, it's cut cost... wht's wrong? :o

Yeah it may cut cost for them, but the cost savings still will goes on with other new projects after this. I rather they stick to the old plan rather than implementing new system which might ask the drivers to spend $$$ installing new stuffs in their cars just for the sake of being more efficiency for their officers to do their work etc...

I'm not sure whether the tag comes along permanently once we get the season ticket or we need to keep on changing the tags whenever we purchased the tickets. Let say, if we lost the tag but the tickets are still with us, still useable anot??

There wasn't much info for the usage of these new system in the report though, so can't gives much comments :|

if I'm not wrong, the idea behind the electronic label is that u won't need to change labels all the time, juz get the label once (with ur car registration number), and in future u can go to internet to renew ur car park label... so less hassle for drivers... since they use the PDA wireless access to check against the HQ database, ur car park status would be update w/o u changing the car park label...
