SINGAPORE : The body of a missing diver was found in the waters off Pulau Hantu at around 9.40 am on Tuesday.
Singaporean Sue Qing Wen, who is in his 20s and who had just finished his National Service, was reported missing on Saturday, the eve of the Lunar New Year.
He and several others has gone for their first dive in open waters off Pulau Hantu - as part of their diving certification - but did not make it back.
Pulau Hantu is 15 minutes away from Sentosa by speedboat.
Police said they received a call from a member of the public about the body.
A diving wet suit and an oxygen tank were also found with the body.
No one responded to Channel NewsAsia's queries when our crew visited his house in Chua Chu Kang - CNA
I feel this has a very negative impact on SG diving industry. Coz im into scuba diving & it is a very safe sport if all the safety measures are being followed. But being parents, they will always worry about their children's safety. Hope the poor guy's soul rest in peace.

It is really that dangerous. If you buy insurance policies and declare that you do go for diving as part of your lifestyle, you will be pay more premiums than someone who don't. :D

Diving is not dangerous..it is diving for beginners in Singapore and remote places that are dangerous.
It has a way lower fatality rate than Motorbikes.
Just tat diving accidents are more newsworthy than car accidents.

I agree diving is not "extreme" sports as what many people there think. As long as safety precuation is taken to mind, diving is one of the safest activity to take up, it is only the gear, money, the amount of safe diving area which prevent people there from doing so.

There must be a statistical research done to classify them in the high risk category. :)

So time I got this feeling that the statistical research for classifying diving in the high risk category is out dated or funded by some insurance company.:| Any way this is not the only diving accident to happen near or around the waters of Pulau Hantu, a few diving death happened there before. I guessing the place maybe not very "clean" as it maybe something to do with the old malay fishing village, ...........black magic.........wandering spirits............:pray2:

Be it superstition or watever.....the important aspect is safetly.....one of my friend's friend know the deceased...heard that his diving partner went up the surface without the deceased...by right, as they are still obtaining their open water license, they should come up together.....diving always must be accompanied by a partner.....
diving always must be accompanied by a partner.....
I agree on that. Sometime the number of divers is the thin life line in which one can be save.

Both of them are still taking the open water cert, so it is not totally fair to blame the other party. It is more like to alert the divemaster/instructor if your buddy encounter difficulties in the water. Sometimes, super blur especially it is the 1st time diving. Sure got cxxx up here & there.

Explaination:
Pulau Hantu
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chinese : 韩都岛
Pulau Hantu is located to the south of the main island of Singapore, off the Straits of Singapore. Pulau Hantu is actually made up of two islets: Pulau Hantu Besar (Big Ghost Island) and Pulau Hantu Kechil (Little Ghost Island), with a total area of 12.6 hectares. At low tide, it is possible to wade across the shallow lagoon between the two islands, but not at high tide.
Hantu is the Malay word for ghost and Pulau Hantu is aptly named as "island of ghosts". It was here that ancient Malay warriors once dueled to the death and their ghosts are said to wander the isle.
There were once two great warriors locked in a fierce battle at sea. Many people died and the blue seas slowly became polluted with human blood, upsetting the Jinns at the bottom of the ocean. In anger, one powerful Jinn created a whirlpool and sucked the two warriors into the deep sea to drown them. Not deterred, they continued their battle. Suddenly, the Jinn sprayed water on one of them. The other warrior, seeing his opponent blinded, thrusted his sword into his abdomen. At the same time, the wounded warrior plunged his sword into the other man. Both collapsed and died.
The gods felt it was wrong for the sea spirits to interfere in human affairs. Thus, the Jinn transformed the two warriors into islets so that their spirits can continue to live on them. As one of the warriors was smaller than the other, his islet was known as Pulau Hantu Kechil while the bigger one was called Pulau Hantu Besar.
