KUALA LUMPUR : A well-known Malaysian political commentator has been questioned by police over the gruesome murder of a Mongolian girl near the capital Kuala Lumpur.
Police chief Musa Hassan has declined to identify the man, but local media has identified him as the head of a local think tank.
The police chief, however, confirmed that three members of the police force, including a woman officer, have been arrested in connection with the murder, with more arrests to come.
According to Malaysian media reports, the body of the 30-year-old victim, Anna Ana Ang, is believed to have been blown up by a hand grenade.
Police are combing the crime scene off Shah Alam, some 30 kilometres west of the capital Kuala Lumpur.
The victim reportedly had a brief affair with the Malaysian man when he went to Mongolia on a business trip a year ago.
Following her liaison with the man, reported to be a close associate of a senior cabinet minister, Ms Ang is said to have delivered a baby this year.
She is said to have travelled to Malaysia with two friends to demand US$500,000 from the man and have gone to meet him at his upmarket residence in Damansara Heights.
But the meeting did not go well, according to the local media, and three police officers were later called in to remove Anna from the house.
When she did not return to the hotel, her friends lodged a police report of her disappearance and subsequently notified the Mongolian consulate in Bangkok.
Malaysians will be watching with keen interest as more details unfold in the coming days.- CNA/so/de
