Marvel with a 12-page preview of July’s Ultimate Fantastic Four #21, the first issue of Mark Millar and Greg Land’s three-part “Crossover” story.
Back to our quick April interview with Millar about the arc, the writer ain’t about to confirm or deny that the “Crossover” in question is a literal meeting of the “Ultimate”/“616” universes, although the cover image released certainly suggests that’s what may be happening.
“What happens is that Reed starts getting emails from another dimension with a warning of an impending crisis,” Millar said. “Details of how they can open a bridge between these two universes are quickly conceived and then much madness ensues.
“Would a crossover between the Ultimate and Marvel Universe really be that bad? Nobody complained when the Justice League met the Justice Society. Just sit back and enjoy the story. We've got time-travel, fights at the beginning of time, fights at the end of time, pretty much every character Marvel has on their books and probably the best villain I've ever come up with. And that's just the first story and leaving out the best parts.
“After this we have the undersea pyramids of Atlantis; the Tomb of Namor; the hidden secret shame of the Storm family; Johnny's new best pal; a rival school that resides in a great big building near the Baxter Building and hates their guts; alien invasions; the Thing going mad; Reed and Ben shrunken down and chasing bad guys inside the President; and a million other things I can't even remember. Plus two other big things I can't reveal because they're major spoilers for later in the year.
“It's non-stop and probably the most unselfconscious thing I think I've ever written. It's just a good comic and will pretty much round out the rest of my Marvel contract”
At his messageboard, Millar has been unabashedly hyping the upcoming run to regular visitors for the past months as he’s seen the pages from Land start rolling in.
As it turns out, there’ve been some calls for Millar to put up or shut up.
As Millar posted on his messageboard:
“[Brian] Bendis said he had enough of me showing off about how our Crossover story launching Greg Land and my run on UFF (next month) is going to kick the arse of New Avengers both in terms of quality and sales. He asked me to put my money where my mouth is and Joe Q gleefully started rubbing his hands together because, well, he likes this kind of thing.
“As you know, the Jim Cav/ Superman bet where I lost a grand to Harry Knowles (plus some other bets you never heard of) means that my wife has banned me from throwing any more cash around. Thus, the stakes just got a little higher and I hereby promise that if New Avengers outsells my Ultimate FF ish 21 in July I will go through the entire Chicago Wizard Con completely sober this year. THAT'S how confident I am (and yeah, I might have had a peek at some of the early tracking numbers before I made this bet, but so what?)
“New Avengers is indeed a monster, but Crossover features pretty much every character in the Marvel line-up drawn by Greg Land and some of them have their tits out. You really can't beat that. Also, there's another little surprise up my sleeve which you won't know until you see this so I'm expecting a very fast sell-out too and a quick second printing.”
It was quickly pointed out that Millar’s “bet” had no price for Bendis (i.e., if Ultimate FF did beat New Avengers #7 in sales…then what? Bendis had to spend all of Chicago drunk?), and the stakes were changed slightly. Currently, as the bet stands, if UFF #21 beats New Avengers #7 in July, Bendis will have to wear a curly blond wig for all his panels at WizardWorld: Chicago in August. If New Avengers #7 beats Ultimate FF #21, Bendis welcomes Millar to the shiny side, and will shave Millar’s head as a feature of Saturday’s “Cup ‘o Joe” panel.
As Quesada also added to Millar: “I also recommend that you up the stakes. Grow a beard for the con so that if you lose (and you know you will) not only does Brian get to shave your pinpoint of a head, but he gets to carve a J and a Q on respective sides of your beard just for the shear boldness of this dare.”
There are rumors that if UFF beats NA, Millar will get to shave Bendis’…well…we hope it’s a joke.
