Which place is good ?
I've tried the one at Taka basement (Romando or something), Curry Flavour at Stamford, Hitomi (?) restaurant and another one at Shaw. So far think the one at Romando best.

Erm, my homecooked Japanese beef curry. Best curry ever.
I went to Liang Court basement for dinner after working late this friday. I think i saw that one too. Looks gd, but i didnt try coz i was too tired to wait. Just want something quick...
Personally i tried the japanese restaurant at Chinatown Point before. Its not bad and FREAKING filling.
Basically u get a big plate of rice, glazed with curry. The curry comes with carrot, potato and chunks of meat. AND THEN, there is still a big piece of tonkatsu. Coz its Tonkatsu curry rice lor:D
I am a big eater. I was almost stuffed to death by it. It cost ard $12, i think...

Romantic Kobe is nice. $8.90, the curry is served separately so that you could eat it differently if you don't want the curry over the rice.
I like the Katsu curry. Hmmm deep-fried pork chop with curry.

Try throwing in some meat. Pork is more "traditional", chunky pieces. Beef is a good option too, but maybe some cant eat though...
Oh, onions can also. It is supposed to sweeten the flavour. Use the japanese onions, i think they are sweeter. Our local ones are more on the spicy side...
Rem to throw in whole. I think no need dice or chop them. Have them in their whole, this should be more flavourful.

From my experience, I think Kazuki's comment on the Chinatown Point Jap restaurant's portion is somewhat exaggerated - I am not a small eater, but neither am I a bottomless pit - but I certainly had no problems finishing the curry rice portion. Had enough space for side dishes too. Price was not too ex, which is good. Then again, I last ate there in 04, so maybe things have changed.
I haven't eaten at Tonkichi for a while (years ago in fact), but IIRC I thought they were overpriced for the amount and quality of food served.
I've eaten once at the Taka basement one (Romando?) in 04 ... wasn't particularly impressed. Regulars tell me that their standard has dropped ...
For me, I actually rather enjoyed eating at Curry Favour. I thought it was reasonably priced for a decent portion, with a nice-tasting sauce and fresh cuts of meat. I suppose in the end, different people will have different preferences on spiciness/sweetness level etc so there's no real correct opinion on the best Jap curry rice joint.

Well... At least from my past few visits, they never failed to serve me with giant portions. So its either yours or my problem lor...
Imagine a plate filled with rice then glazed with curry, many pcs of carrots, potato and meat. Then coz its a Katsu curry, there is still a piece of Katsu abt the size of a human's palm.
(My pit size is something like can dump 7 dumplings. Is that consider normal?)

7 dumplings - you are referring to bak zhang? Each one about the size of a large apple?
If you can whack 7 of those at one go with the glutinous rice and all, I really dun see how 1 commercially reasonable serving of curry rice can stop you!
If their portion can really = 7x bak zhang, I confirmed will also want to eat there so can be full full for once :powerhead

ya, bak zhang.
But i am only consider the slightly above average eater in my grp. I have a buddy, at foodcourt he can have a plate of pork chop, then order chicken rice add another 8bowls of rice. Then a platter of fruits to end. That was the best record(and his also) i ever seen. I am always fighting with him to see who can eat more:P
But seems that i was satisfied with their portions several times, and u werent. I dunno if u still wanna take "risk" again...

My God. TV shows teach you the wrong stuff, I see.
A good Japanese curry (on the more traditional side) needs to have carrots, potatoes, big red onions, meat (either chicken, beef or pork) all diced up. If you just throw an onion in like what Kazuki-sama has said, the flavour of the onion won't mix well with the rest nicely.
I like to cut my veggies smaller pieces (smaller than bite-size) so that the flavours come out and it gives the curry a new taste too.
Speaking of food, I haven't been able to cook something good for myself. Oh the woe.

Same ingredients as i posted mah.
Carrots, potatos, onions and meat. Which part different???
Btw, as for the onion. I didnt learn it from those variety shows, its those shows where chefs of restaurants are invited to perform. They throw in onion as a whole too.
My grandma when she boils soup or makes stew, she will throw in onions as a whole too.
But my grandma will piece/dice the onions if she is stir frying meat or rice.
I think japanese curry, some restaurants will add other veggies or even grated apple to enhance the sweetness.

My grandma dices the onions when she's cooking curry. Even when she cooks stews or soups she dices the curry. I ask her why, she says the flavours will then come nicely together.
I'm the kind of people that loves to eat onions. I don't like soups or anything else (especially curry) with a whole onion in it. The core of the onion would be too sweet.
To each his own, I think. You think it's best to cook an onion whole, I don't think so, we'll see how the rest likes their curry.

K, i went to eat at Bistro Takaya after csc yesterday.
1st, the portion slightly decreased liaoz...:( But lucky still able to fill me.
They used to serve it in a big round plate. Yesterday i got my Katsu Curry Rice served in a more rectangular one, something like those hotplate but bigger.
The meat in the curry are no longer in chunky pcs, they are sliced liaoz. Still there are potatoes, carrots, that piece of katsu and lettuce.
$11
But lucky i ordered a portion of Kurage in advance. It came the way i like it. Cold, sourish and chewy.:D
$4.50
The prices are nett priced.
If time permits(and wallet...), maybe will go that outlet at Liang Court to try too. I like that silver container they use to hold the curry.:D
Wow, you damn rich:prayer: , eat $11 curry rice liao also eat $4.50 entree...I could survive 2 days of meal by just your lunch alone!!!:salute:

Very spicy japanese curry....
hmm...
Actually in the 1st place, i think japaneses dun really take spicy food. Which easily explain why the japanese curry we find are more on the sweet side.
If i am not wrong, japanese cuisine is more on the light side, especially the Kanto side. The Kansai's tastebuds are more for the heavier flavourings.

Ma Maison. This is a Japanese Western restaurant in Bugis 2nd level. Prices for a dish meal is abt $10++.
Went with a grp of friends yesterday. I ordered Beef Stragonov Rice and Tonkatsu.
The former is actually ommelette rice, the very typical japanese style with an ommelette wrapping fried rice. U can get to choose btn ketchup our brown sauce(i suspect its glazed sauce).
The Tonkatsu is really GOOD. But rem to eat it while its pipping hot. Or else the meat will becomes tough liaoz...[-X
The ambience of the restaurant is really good, cozy and nice. And u will see small grps of friends and japanese families dining there.

OK, have tried:
Romantic Kobe at Meidi-ya - $12.90 - deluxe set. The fried stuff not fantastic, the curry is good, but a tad too "indian" or spicy for me.
Tonkichi at Suntec basement -$18 + GST. Tried the fried fish curry. Fried fish is good. Curry portion is large, but I overestimated the amount of gravy as there are a lot of potatoes and carrot in the curry gravy (separate bowl). Curry is very richly flavoured, but not spicy, with a slight sour aftertaste, perhaps from fruits.
So far my personal favourite still the one at Taka basement.

I went to Liang Court's Romantic Kobe for lunch today.
Ate their Deluxe Curry and Seaweed salad.
The Deluxe Curry set comes with a piece of Ebi tempura, 1 potato croquette and two pcs of tonkatsu, with rice. The curry sauce is served from another dish so that u can pour whatever amt of curry at your own preference.
I find the fried stuff abit too dry though. I would have prefer those stew meat curry that comes with chunks of beef. But i dun remember seeing it on the mene...
Then its the seaweed salad. I have to admit its saltish, but it tastes very refreshing! It is very simple food. Seaweed threw over lettuce and laced with soya sauce. The crunchiness of the seaweed is very siong!=D>
Then is the service of the staff. The cashier lady actually bother to smile and thank me when i was leaving. It might be a small gesture, but it does touch my heart. :)
