I read the story when it first came out and although quite
good, I had mixed fellings. Stardust is a classic fairy tale-type
story with its evil witch, coming of age questing and magical
elements. And taken as it with the targeting of the younger
set, it is fine. However, being a Gaimen fan, I was expecting
a bit more. I had finished reading Neverwhere and some of
his Sandman stories and was expecting characters a bit more
mysterious and richer; the ploting to be more ingenious
than following fairy tale formula (young man goes on quest, meets
girl, falls in love, battle evil, learning things along the way, etc).
I guess I had unfair expectations on the book.
The art, however, by Charles Vess is excellent.
I do recommend the book as a nice evening read.

BTW, there is a movie adaption coming out. It stars a few big
names: Robet De Niro, Clare Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer.
