project synopsis :
The Asia-Europe Foundation launches a pilot project that brings together a team of artists from Asia and Europe to produce an Asia-Europe Comics Publication. The team will convene in Singapore for a 12-day meeting to “hot-house” a script and storyboard sketches to be produced into a 100-120 page comics publication. It will set out to produce content that has both social purpose and commercial appeal, but its primary aim would be to promote the discovery and building of new inter-relationships between Asian and European people and societies, by relating their common concerns and aspirations through each other’s eyes. The publication would be targeted for launch at international festivals.

The success of this pilot would lead to a continuing process of collaboration and subsequent projects that would deepen understanding among Asian and European creators, storytellers, artists and communicators by encouraging cross-cultural exchange and production. Output from their projects could serve as the basis for future publications on Asia-Europe connections, both at the societal and personal levels. These could either be adopted as a publication series, or take place as finite and self-contained collaborations.

Artists from Asia, Europe meet in Singapore for comics project
By Adelyn Lim, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 05 August 2006 1807 hrs

The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) has brought together a team of comic artists to work on a project.

The 12 artists come from various European and Asian countries.

Thanks to the Asia-Europe Comics Project, these young comic artists have a chance to get together.

They are in Singapore to work on a project on migration.

Chin Hock Seng, ASEF's Director for Public Affairs, said: "We also wanted to bring the group here to Singapore on the eve of the 41st birthday of our nation and give them an experience of what it is like for an immigrant society four decades on - fairly successful.... (to show them) how the different communities from different language backgrounds, different racial backgrounds, different cultural backgrounds, coped with the challenges of living together."

The artists will work together on a script that will illustrate the issues and experiences surrounding migration across communities.

"I'm quite excited about it and the very idea that I'm actually a part of this is good enough, and sometimes it does overwhelm me," said Lyra Garcellano, one of the artists.

As part of the project, the artists will also hold a talk, workshop and exhibition in Singapore. - CNA/ir
