North Korea launches missiles, Taepo Dong 2 explodes

By Joseph Bermudez Jr Jane's Analyst Colorado

North Korea (the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) conducted a series of ballistic missile tests, launching a total of six missiles during the early hours of 5 July. Initial reports indicate that these six systems consisted of one Taepo Dong 2 and five 'Scud'-class (-B/-C/-ER) missiles. As JDW went online, a seventh, as yet unidentified missile, was fired at 0822 (GMT).

This missile exercise is notable for several reasons:

1 It is the first launch attempt for the Taepo Dong 2;

2 It is the largest ever North Korean ballistic missile exercise to date. Prior to this, the May 1993 exercise was the largest with the launch of four missiles - three 'Scud' B/Cs and one No Dong;

3 Most of the exercise was conducted in the early morning, apparently so as to both restrict foreign intelligence-gathering capabilities and achieve an element of surprise.

Success or failure?

While the Taepo Dong 2 failed shortly after lift-off, it is likely to still have provided the North Koreans with valuable experience and some limited data collection. Both of these will be funneled into future developments of the system. Additionally, the successful launching of six 'Scud'-class missiles (possibly including one No Dong) demonstrates that Korean People's Army missile units have achieved a significant level of operational readiness and that the missile systems are developmentally mature.

I like Mr Kim for the 4th of July scary firework. He really know how to celebrate, he the man. I just dun want Japan and South Korea to be harm.:pray2:

I thought there are people still starving in North Korea and their government has the money to spend on missile test...?

Missile test is simply waste of money. Or are they thinking of selling this to another country for terrorisim...?

This dude is so brainless.:bang:
Country and ppl poor liaoz must concentrate on economy if u want other countries to respect u.
U see South Korea, China. They are gd examples. They knew what they are lacked of and really worked on it. They are now undisputable impt economic countries in the world now.

Sometimes stupids will always be stupid...
Now this action is as if telling the South Korea, Japan and USA "Hey Dude! Come hit me lah! ne ne ne.:duh: "

[OT]
Btw, ask u all. Have u all got any North Koreans in your life before???
I rem back in my sec2 period. For 1yr my class had this big handsome looking North Korean guy transferred in. He was the hit with everyone lor. Handsome, the gals love him. Sporting and rich, even guys wanna mix with him.
But that time for us 14 yr old kids, we dunno the diff btn North and South Korea. So now thinking back, i am thinking why he was in sg that time... Coz for them to get out of country is not an easy task lor. He is quite rich also. Strong too. He does pull-ups for a 14yr old like no sweats. 30+++ still going fast.:o

I don't think it will be a WW. Other than the US and N Korea, no countries will wanna get politically involved coz it's not good for the economy.

It will just be another case of Iraq Vs US scenario.

Those missiles are damn ex and unlike computer games it's limited also. From the past few week's report, it's quite obvious they are targeting at US, that's why they tested the missiles on 4th July too.

Actually sometimes I wonder how much threat these missiles actually pose, coz I have seen documentaries on missiles and anti missiles weapons. There are tons of anti missiles that are really powerful. Somemore N Korea and US is such a huge sea apart. The US can fire 5 to 1 anti missiles before the N Korea's one can even see the coast of US. =))

I know India has nuclear too. Almost every major military power has nuclear. But if the countermeasures destory it in the middle of the Pacific, no lives will be lost. :D

If US attacks first like Iraq's case, prices won't really soar because N Korea don't really produce any resources. For Iraq's case some of the prices went up coz mercenaries were destorying oil rigs. But at the same time, stock market prices went up. :D

I believe it's a matter a time before US finds a crappy reason to take down N Korea like Iraq. There was a email with the world's most wanted people and I think Iraq has been conquered, N Korea soon, other parts I remember was like South America or Russia. :)

US not stupid. why go for war to waste $$? u know why US so involve in war in middle east? ans: OIL!!
they fight N korea and send in young AMerican life for what?

remember when u go in as a conqueror u can take things and order certain things to go your way. pple go for war to gain things which most of the time is wealth. War need money and if return not good why start war. anyway if it happen, then maybe america will commission other country to join in so they dun use so much money. i bet Jap will be happy to try their training and get more freedom in military power which they are restrict after WW2... so the show may happen....

Not all wars are really profitable. Like the ongoing Waziristan War, it is to remove monkeys from playing punk with US. If N Korea were to really do something, US will definately do something to flatten them completely. =D>

Imagine you having the world's no. 5 most powerful military country and no. 2 in terms of special ops forces poking your backside everyone once awhile when you're celebrating your birthday. I think you will also go nuts one. =))

Anyway so far no country proposed military action in response to the test fire and all calls for action have been diplomatic or economical, so give it another few days and I think things might settle down again. :)

Hmm... whatever the outcome is, people in North Korea is still starving. I find it funny, N.Korea leaders are building something that can't feed their own people. Maybe thats where all the money goes to.. Instead of the people stomache, its going to feed the missiles... :(

This is the weird thing abt communist...
Too tied liaoz. They must be more open hearted, accept the others. Let others earn your money. When they earn enough, they will give u some profits also wan mah. Then when u have money, economic power, then build a really strong undefeatable army.

I hope N.Korean will be sane enough not to start another war. Irag is a very good example. One country against the world, who has a higher chance..? Whatsmore, N.Koreans are starving, and do you think they will support their leaders decision to start one...? I doubt so...:(

Sometimes, its hard to decipher whats on the leaders mind. Especially when the whole world is trying so hard to rake revenue/profits/trades, but they on the other hand is trying on experimenting new toys...Sad...

But the problem is desparate ppl will do desparate things. They are using this as a bargaining chip, if a war really breaks out, who will loose out more? Like I said before, this is a case of " want to die, all die together".

this is a very bad sign now. With north korea going nuts... I really do not know why they do not want peaces.... -_- (I am thinking of that weird movie on that singing north-korea guy)

Japan they may have did a very BAD deed in WORLD WAR II. But they are now mostly doing things like "saving" people's life.

US schoot have kick their ass by now if not for the war they are "on" still.
