Incredible, Far-Reaching Changes Coming to Comic Series
http://www.newsarama.com/Image/spawn/spawn150_tan_photo_01_dp.jpg

The groundbreaking 150th issue of Spawn is coming this fall and we've got huge news to share concerning the comic and the character that is the very wellspring of the McFarlane Companies.
http://www.newsarama.com/Image/spawn/spawn150_tan_photo_03_dl.jpg
First, the obvious: The 150th issue of an independent and often dark and disturbing comic book, one that saw its first issue hit shelves in June of 1992, is a truly big deal.
http://www.newsarama.com/Image/spawn/spawn150_tan_photo_02_dp.jpg http://www.newsarama.com/Image/spawn/spawn150_tan_photo_04_dp.jpg
Regular readers know that the core Spawn character has been changing, adapting to his Hell-born powers and his circumstances, transforming into an organic force of nature. Spawn #150 is the marker that signals a real turn in Spawn's existence.

The sleeping giant has awoken.
http://www.newsarama.com/Image/spawn/spawn150_tan_photo_05_dp.jpg
"I have to keep pushing the limits of my character and the direction I've always envisioned for him," said Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. "I believe that we've been pacing a bit slowly, so we're moving onto the super-highway with Spawn. Enormous changes are in store changes at a cosmic level and it's tremendously exciting."

To increase the pace and the energy of the book, we're proud to welcome a new creative team to the fold. Penciler Angel Medina and longtime writer Brian Holguin were masterful in creating with Todd's direction the current world of the Hellspawn.
http://www.newsarama.com/Image/spawn/spawn150_tan_photo_06_dp.jpg
Now we're ushering in the team to take it to the next level: phenomenally talented penciler Philip Tan (of Uncanny X-Men fame) and British writer extraordinaire David Hine (best-known for District X, Strange Embrace and Daredevil).

Brian Haberlin a man who knows the Spawn mythos inside, out and backward will become the new editor-in-chief of Spawn and will bring a new energy (and new projects?) to the Spawn universe. He, along with the new creative team, will be in charge of turning Todd's vision into reality.

Spawn #150 itself will be a special double-length story with added editorial content, pinup art and much more. It will feature four variant covers from four unique artists: Todd McFarlane, Greg Capullo, Philip Tan and Jim Lee.

Want a bold new enemy for Spawn? Check. Got it.

This incredible issue will serve as a jumping-on point for new readers and marks an undeniable change in the future of the Spawn that will intrigue longtime readers. Don't miss it when it hits stores in September.

JIM LEE: SPAWN-ing A COVER

http://www.newsarama.com/Image/spawn/LeeSpwnpncls.jpg

http://www.newsarama.com/Image/spawn/LeeSpwninks.jpg

http://www.newsarama.com/Image/spawn/LeeSpawnclr.jpg

At the Sun of Gelatometti group blog, Jim Lee has posted the pencils, inks, and colors for his cover to October’s Spawn #150, the first issue of the series revitalization/new direction.

Jim, being Jim, of course narrated the stages of cover creation:

Man, when Todd asked me to do a variant Spawn #150 cover, I thought, “Crap, it's been over 10 years since I have drawn this guy.”

Not sure of even what his current costume was, I had Todd and co. shoot me a jpeg for reference. Then I started and memories of the early Image days flooded back. But it wasn't the old squabbles that came to mind, but all the goofy crap we did when we were riding high and living out our dreams. So just from that standpoint--this image was a lot of fun to draw, simply for that old walk down memory lane. I remember Todd's hopes for his character--this was way before the
movie and toys and damn, if he didn't accomplish 99.9% of his dreams. That's perseverance for ya. Hopefully I can tap into that same enthusiasm when I tackle Wildcats with Grant Morrison cause this was way too much fun!

Talk about the hookup! Yowsa...inks by the ever meticulous Danny Miki. He really went to town on this cover. If I had known he was going so intense, I would just have drawn a stick figure, heh. I dig all the textures on the demons and check out how he hooked up Spawn's right forearm.

Normally, I'm not into inkers drawing in what's not there but Danny is a maestro at making Spawn look Spawnish and he didn't disappoint me here. I spent at least a half hour just staring at the intricacies of his line-work. The rendering and shades of gray he establishes on Spawn's rib cage is really world class inkage. Take a bow, Danny!

Colors by the incredible Brian Haberlin. Look how he separates all the detail and elements using just the minimal right of colors. Note the subtle renderings on the tendrils near the bottom center of the page. Adds texture without busying up the already intense piece. He put cool blues in the foreground to frame the hot, warm tones on Spawn himself establishing depth and color vibrancy.

Makes it really sing...don't it?

TODD MCFARLANE'S SPAWN #150 COVER REVEALED
Spawn's Creator Gets Hands-on for Historic Issue

Todd McFarlane, one of the most influential comic book creators of the last two decades, returns to the character he created with his first cover illustration since 2000's Spawn #100. Now, 50 issues later, and on the cusp of an all-new direction for his Hellspawned warrior, Todd once again puts pen and ink to paper to craft another in a long line of visually stunning cover images.

During the creative process, Todd took the time to consider a number of possible layouts for what will undoubtedly be a fan favorite amongst the four covers produced for Spawn's milestone 150th issue (incoming artist Philip Tan, longtime Spawn contributor Greg Capullo and one of Todd's original Image Comics partners, Jim Lee, provide the other three).

Should he go with a close-up of Spawn's head and shoulders? A nice close-range image, which would allow him to go crazy with all of the gross little details present in Spawn's broken, beaten, burnt and decayed visage? Really go to town on all of the insane details he has become known for?

Or maybe, he could construct a violently hypnotic battle between the hell-spawned reincarnation of Al Simmons' damned soul and one of his many old (as well as some new and as-yet-unrevealed) enemies? Maybe Spawn could be tearing the Violator to pieces in a necroplasm-fueled rage? Or, it could be the Disciple, a mysterious new adversary who makes his first appearance within the pages of Spawn #150, feeling the full brunt of Spawn's fury. Whoever Spawn's foe would be, the overall theme of carnage would remain the same, allowing the brutal action to portray a contrast to the other three cover offerings.

Then, of course, there was the thought that an iconic image of the tormented warrior would serve well to not only showcase Todd's talent, but to also bridge the gap between the past, present and future of Spawn. With more attention being focused on having the covers capture some element of the story within each issue, this would be the perfect time to showcase Spawn in all of his glory. No overly dramatic posing or twisting angles, just Spawn -- back straight, chains whipping about, hands glowing that eerie shade of green, as he manipulates the destructive power of the necroplasmic energy which makes him whole.

This last idea hit the mark, and Todd went to work. First, sketching out the rough outline using non-reproducing blue lead -- this allows the artist to rough out the basic concept without having to worry about mistakes. Then, going back in with ink to bring the art to life and add the fine details that have long been a hallmark of his artwork -- both in terms of comic books and his many concept sketches and notes for any number of action figures.

One of the elements of Todd's Issue #150 cover that differs from some of his past work is the fact that he deliberately stayed away from adding any heavy blacks, allowing his line work to better stand out. Instead of a harshly shadowed image, Todd worked closely with colorist (and newly appointed editor-in-chief of the Spawn comics lineup) Brian Haberlin, to ensure that the colors used on the cover not only worked to set the mood, but also added an extra dimension to Todd's original artwork underneath.

i do remembered reading a related article stated tan eng huat is from malaysia. i think his first breakthough into comics was a title from dc comics, most probably doom patrol or suicide squad a couple of years ago.

billy tan is from malaysia penang. his first breakthrough was from top cow comics back in the late 90's...as for the 1st title, something related to "volt"..

SPAWN: NEW ARTISTS AND A NEW DIRECTION!
It's a Brand New Year of Change
January 19, 2007
Copyright 2007 TMP International, Inc.
Change is in the air - or more accurately, on the page.

The epic 14-issue Armageddon storyline wraps up this month with Issue 164. The collected edition of the first half of this arc was a quick sell-out with a second printing in stores soon.

Issue 165 will break continuity and feature a Mandarin Spawn one-shot. Lan Medina, part of the Eisner award-winning team on Fables, will be doing the art honors. The Mandarin Spawn action figure has long been a fan favorite, and in response to their requests over the years, this issue provides the origin of this character.

And now for the change. Spawn regular series artist Philip Tan will be moving to TMP's first new monthly Spawn title in four years, Spawn: Godslayer. Described as a "re-imagining" of the historic Spawn series, Godslayer is set in an epic fantasy world ruled by myriad gods. It tells the story of a warrior prince named Bairn, who is cursed to hunt down and slay the gods, one by one. This new regular series follows up the successful 64-page one-shot by Brian Holguin and Jay Anacleto, which debuted last fall. Philip was tapped as the perfect artist for this project with his incredible eye for detail and design. Simply put, Philip can do fantasy like no one else in the business. Holguin will helm the writing, with award-winning artist Anacleto on tap to do the covers for the series.

And with Spawn 166, a new direction! Todd McFarlane's vision for the book has always been dark, cinematic, urban horror, and the book is now set to become just that. Brian Haberlin will be taking over the art with a more realistic style than the book has ever seen. Fan favorite David Hine will continue as scribe. With Issue 166, Spawn has re-created the world and has unwittingly created the bad along with the good. The series will see the return of favorite old villains with new twists, plus the creation of new villains more dangerous than any in Spawn history.

"Issue 166 is the re-launch," says Spawn writer David Hine. "Spawn has literally destroyed mankind and put it back together, but it soon becomes apparent that things are not quite right. It's just little things at first - the fact that whiskey tastes a little different, or that everything is more sharply defined. We're running with the questions raised by the science fiction concept of the matter transmitter. If you break a human being down into particles, zap them across the universe and put them back together, is it still the same person? As the story progresses, the cracks will really begin to show."

Haberlin says, "I had just started on a new series for TMP, Todd McFarlane's Dragons, based on the toy line. Todd loved the pages (or to quote him, 'These pages rock!') so much that when we decided to change Spawn's direction he wanted to put me on it, and let Dragons come out later as a miniseries. Well, when you get an offer like that, you just can't say no."

Spawn 166 becomes a true picking-up point for die-hard fans as well as new fans that are simply daunted by 165 issues of continuity.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!
We have finally found our artist for the new Robert Kirkman and Todd McFarlane superhero. We're not talking until we have art to show, but he's great! and... Still to come, Spawn: Architects of Fear, an original graphic novel by Arthur Clare and Aleksi Briclot, the team that brought you Spawn Simony. We can promise you this: the art will simply blow your minds! Please keep an eye on SPAWN.com for additional details and special behind-the-scenes information on all these projects.

'THE DEATH OF SPAWN' IS COMING
TMP to Kill Flagship Comic Book Character This Summer
March 30, 2007
Copyright 2007 TMP International, Inc.

This summer, death comes for Spawn.

Fifteen years ago, government assassin Al Simmons died, only to be reborn as the dark hero Spawn. In August, death finally catches up with him. Todd McFarlane Productions proudly presents the comic book event of the year: "The Death of Spawn." This major comic book crossover will take place across each of TMP’s titles, and is sure to shock and delight fans around the globe.

TMP editor-in-chief Brian Haberlin recently visited our Tempe offices to meet directly with Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and put the finishing touches on this epic story.

SPAWN.com asked Todd about the meeting, and killing off his iconic creation. "It went well," he said. "This move will surprise a lot of fans, but at this point, it’s the only one that makes sense. Spawn has always been about death. The character himself couldn’t have been born until Al Simmons died. Now it’s time for Spawn to die as well."

Todd explains, "We just wrapped up what I feel is the most shocking Spawn story we’ve done so far: the ‘Armageddon’ story arc, and the revelations about Al’s past in issue #164. As a storyteller, you have to ask yourself, ‘Where do you go once you’ve destroyed the entire world? Once you’ve brought your hero to the height of his power as the savior of an entire planet, and revealed his darkest shame?’ To me, the only logical step was to destroy the hero himself."

We then turned to Brian about his thoughts on the death of Spawn. "This is why Todd brought David [Hine, Spawn writer] and I on board -- to take the book in bold new directions. To be honest, I was a little taken aback when Todd first let the cat out of the bag that this was where he wanted to go. But, now that we’ve been able to see the master plan unfold over the past 15 issues, and we know where we are going and how certain events affect and set up some of the upcoming issues, I think it’ll be great."

Brian also provided us with the Previews solicitation copy for the event’s first issue:

"SPAWN #172: Nemesis -- Part 1"
An unstoppable new villain rises from the ashes of Armageddon. Even in the perfect world he created, Spawn cannot escape the forces of evil. This terrible new force brings Spawn to a dark epiphany: as the last remnant of Hell, is Spawn now the very source of evil?

SPAWN #166 — featuring Spawn's rise from the ashes of armageddon — has sold out at Diamond. That's right: After 15 years of continuous publication, Todd McFarlane's signature creation can still spawn sell-out sales. This time it's thanks to new artist Brian Haberlin, who joins writer David Hine to steer Image's flagship title in an all-new direction! Hine and Haberlin's new take on SPAWN has struck such a chord with fans, and Image is immediately going back to press to meet the huge demand.

"Todd wanted us to grab people by the lapels and tell 'em that Spawn is back!" says writer David Hine. "The whole creative team felt supercharged, and it shows in the book. Once I saw Haberlin's art – particularly that soul-chilling last page – I knew we had a hit on our hands."

SPAWN #166 chronicles Spawn's life after the epic conclusion to the Armageddon story line. Spawn has returned to the alleyways of New York and found that not everything is right in the world. Part gritty crime story and part cutting edge horror, the opening salvo of Hine and Haberlin's new direction is easily the most talked about issue since the series' debut.

"Hine and Haberlin are leading SPAWN in a very new, very dark direction," says retailer Mike Malve of Atomic Comics in Phoenix. "If you haven’t read SPAWN before, now is a good place to give it a try. Haberlin's art is as different from previous incarnations of
Spawn as McFarlane's original run was different from his work on Spider-man. Very dark, very disturbing… very good. "

When Brian Haberlin took over as Editor-in-Chief of the Spawn line in 2005, his marching orders from Todd McFarlane was to “kick his creative ass.”

So, he and the then-new team of writer David Hine and artist Philip Tan brought Armageddon to Earth (and Spawn readers’ consciousness), thus destroying all of humanity, only to remake them again in Spawn’s own image.

The series went through a makeover (again) with the sold-out issue #166 - a new beginning with a focus on psychological style horror, and a new artist in the form of Haberlin himself.

We spoke with Haberlin about McFarlane’s greatest creation that once spawned (no pun intended) a feature film in 1997, an HBO animated series, and a line of action figures whose unprecedented attention to detail made McFarlane Toys a toy industry giant.

Newsarama: The 15-part “Armageddon” arc (issues #150 to #164) gave us the feeling that the chapter that started with McFarlane's issue #1 back in 1992 is now closed, and the Spawn mythos begins anew again in line with the creator's wish to "direct, produce and fund" a new " R-rated, cool, creepy, psychological thriller that will hopefully keep you on the edge of your seat".

First of all, Brian, as E-i-C of the Spawn series, why the need to close the old chapter and begin with a new direction?

Brian Haberlin: I don’t think we closed the old chapter really. “Armageddon” was more a way to tie up a bunch of dangling Spawn story lines from the past. Sort of put his narrative house in order. Al is still Al and we’re finding out more about him and what has really been going on behind the scenes for the past 166 issues. There are some things coming up that will knock fans old and new on their asses!

NRAMA: Spawn was once the top seller but many, many fans have left the franchise altogether in the last decade... Top Cow's Witchblade gets a new bearer, so why not Spawn? As mentioned, “Armageddon” is over and done with, although everyone still remembers the Rapture but with a new world re-created by Spawn, why did you decide to further tell the adventures of Al Simmons as the HellSpawn even though there've been many HellSpawns in the past with many more to come?

BH: Witchblade? Who’s that character… I’m not familiar with it? [winks]

In any case, we are actively pursuing stories with new Spawns and using them as buffers in between story arcs of the regular Spawn series.

NRAMA: Yeah, Mandarin Spawn was featured in issue #165 of the main series. Are there plans to highlight/spotlight the Lord Covenant Hellspawn from The Dark Ages series, Daniel Llanso, Pirate Spawn aka Cut Throat, Abdiel, Raenius, and others in "filler" issues in the ongoing series or some other projects?

BH: That’s right. We just did Mandarin Spawn (from Todd’s toy line) and we have Gunslinger Spawn and World War One Spawn waiting in the wings. And who knows down the line maybe another new Spawn series with a new Spawn… there has been talk.

But what I find encouraging with the new direction is we’ve gotten a lot of emails from folks who were Spawn readers when Todd was doing the book himself, who went away from Spawn and perhaps comics (seems people do that… go away for a bit then gravitate back) and are now older… more mature and just love the new take on their old hero. We might have just lucked into some good timing there.

NRAMA: We've not seen the last of Mammon, Man of Miracles, Christopher, Sam & Twitch, and the others, have we?

BH: Nope. Sam and Twitch are major players in the book right now. And we are bringing back a slew of the old characters but with fresh new twists to them.

NRAMA: What's in store of Spawn readers and fans in the months ahead?

BH: Hopefully a comic that will keep them on the edge of their nail biting seats! We have several old Spawn cast members returning as we build of Spawn’s core group of characters, The Clown/Violator, Nyx, Ab and Zab, Mammon… and we even have a storyline coming up dealing with Al’s brothers really revealing more as to why Al is Spawn. I think what people will find if they pick up the book is a Spawn that is more real, more adult, and more scary than ever before. It’s hard to say much about upcoming storylines as David Hine is writing such jaw-dropping stuff you hate to ruin the surprises.

NRAMA: Moving on to other new Spawn projects, we have Adventures of Spawn by Jonathan David Goff and Khary Randolph, edited by Tyler Jeffers. With a webcomic and the 48-page Director's Cut edition already out, what's in store for fans in the coming months?

BH: Yep, they are at it again. New pages are being drawn at this moment. Look for new stuff around San Diego Convention time.

NRAMA: Will there be more webcomics and comics based on previous and/or upcoming McFarlane Toy's Spawn action figure series?

BH: Absolutely, the Adventures of Spawn webcomic was quite a success both online and in print. I think you’ll find a lot more new content coming from us. And a lot of it crossing from web to press and visa versa.

NRAMA: There's also the Godslayer monthly by Brian Holguin and Philip Tan. How does the once warrior prince known as Bairn who's now the Godslayer tie into the overall Spawn mythology/saga?

BH: From the get go, we decided he was a Spawn from a another time and another place. He is really isolated from the rest of the Earth Spawn mythos. Really an excuse to get our fantasy itch scratched. And Philip and Brian really are amazing when it comes to that genre and by them not being tied to Earth history they are able to freely create a new reality.

NRAMA: More Ken Kurosawa and Shadows of Spawn aka Spawn Manga? There's supposed to be four volumes in total, right?

BH: Ken may come back at some time but only 3 Manga were done in Japan… so for now 3 it is.

NRAMA: Got it. Okay, speaking of other Spawn projects, Arthur Clare and Aleksi Briclot are working on a new graphic novel, Spawn: Architects of Fear. What's it about? Since it's by the team that brought us Spawn: Simony, will it feature a familiar character, eg Cogliostro/Cain? Or will it introduce a totally new character?

BH: It’s Spawn and Angels and Demons, what more can you ask, and fully painted by Aleksi… who has become totally amazing as an artist. Not that Simony wasn’t cool but now Aleksi is truly world class. The story takes place outside Spawn regular continuity. So what happens there happens only there.

NRAMA: More crossovers with Batman and other characters from other publishers?

BH: Not until we get Spawn/Batman out.

NRAMA: Finally, will we ever get to see Steve Niles's Spawn: Book of the Dead?

BH: Probably in some form. It may have a place in an Art of Spawn book.

Todd McFarlane Productions has announced that the new Spawn creative team will feature Image Comics co-founders McFarlane (creative director) and Whilce Portacio (artist) joining returning writer Brian Holguin.

The new creative team's run begins with Spawn #185 in October.

"We've just been talking with everybody involved about what we can do to inspire the readers," McFarlane said. "One of them was to take the book in a different direction in terms of the storyline, and the other was to take it in a bit of a different direction artistically, too."

"Having Todd by my side is fantastic, because he gives me all the texture he's been trying to place in his stories," Portacio said. "As the artist, I get to say, 'Okay, let me grab all of this stuff that's oozing out of your head, and let me see if I could make it visually pleasing.' For me, that is artistic bliss."

McFarlane and Portacio will be guests at Wizard World Chicago.

Image Comics has provided us with a first look at November's cover to Spawn #185 by Greg Capullo, which will ship evenly with the Whilce Portacio and Todd McFarlane covers. The issue is the first of a new direction for the series, which sees McFarlane returning to writing the title, with fellow Image founder Whilce Portacio illustrating.

As McFarlane described what he was looking for from the long-time Spawn artist:

“I was looking for a simple, stark image," McFarlane said. "All the #185 covers will have a white background. I needed a visual for people to look at and say, “Whoa, what is happening here?” and the answer to that question is inside the comic book. The cover is the teaser to what’s inside, and where we’re going with our new direction.”

And from Capullo's point of view: "Todd phoned me up and told me the type of image he was hoping for. So, away I went. When he saw what I had done, he told me it was too similar to the image (that I hadn't seen) that he'd done. So, the image you see is my second swipe at it. Kinda of cool, though. How we (Todd and I) think along the same lines, I mean. I love that."
The solicitation for the issue reads:
