Italian striker Montella to join Fulham

Roma striker Vincenzo Montella has joined Fulham on loan for the rest of the season.

The Eternal City club confirmed today that an agreement had been reached to loan out the 32-year-old hitman to the Premiership outfit.

``Roma announce that they have perfected an agreement with Fulham Football Club to loan on a temporary and free basis the sporting rights of the footballer Vincenzo Montella for what remains of the 2006/07 sporting season,'' read the one paragraph statement posted on the club's website.

Montella's departure means that now only club skipper Francesco Totti remains of the starting line-up that won the Serie A title five years ago.

Montella, nicknamed 'il aeroplanino' (the aeroplane) because of his trademark goal celebration, previously played for Empoli, Genoa and Sampdoria before moving to Roma in 1999.

He scored a number of crucial goals in the Scudetto-winning season of 2000/01, many as a substitute, after refusing to hand over his cherished number nine shirt to newly-signed Argentinian striker Gabriel Batistuta, who had demanded the jersey.

He was part of the Italy squad for the 2002 World Cup but did not feature in Marcello Lippi's victorious 23-man party in Germany last year.

Liverpool 1 Arsenal 3 (FA Cup 3rd Round)

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42421000/jpg/_42421527_rosicky_getty416.jpg

A game that knocked the holders out at the first hurdle. Arsenal scored first blood after some delicate one-twos between Hleb and Rosicky who dispatched a first-time curler past Jerzy Dudek into the top left corner. For his second, Rosicky kept going as the Liverpool's defence kept withdrawing till he fired a low shot to squeeze past keeper into the bottom right. 2-0 Half-Time.

Benitez must have re-organised his troops and Liverpool came out ignited to get something out from this game. Jermaine Pennant provided some great opportunities and it was his corner that Crouch's header was directed to Kuyt for a point-blank headed goal. 2-1.

Xavi Alonso was rightly cautioned as he made a meal from a Gilberto challenge inside the box. Sanz Luis Garcia showed a tendendy to go down clutching his face at every contact with the opposition. Emmanuel Eboue should work at his game instead of his theatrics. Hleb received continuous abuse from Garcia who went unpunished. Kuyt and Crouch were both effective players up front for the Reds.

The anfield faithful was soon cheering the team on for the equaliser and Arsenal was tested several times before Carragher lost out on a loose ball to Thierry Henry who then powered into the box for Arsenal's killer goal. With just five shots on goal, Arsenal was clinical in the few chances it had compared to Liverpool with 16 attempts and 62% of possession.

Referee S Bennett did a poor job today and handed out cautions when he could have exercised restrain and failed to punish more deserving players. Clichy worked extremely hard today =D> and the opposite with Julio Baptista, who contributed to nothing in the game coming on as a substitute. Alumnia did a good job today.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly gifted Man Utd a goal in the FA Cup third round tie as he let Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's shot through his body in stoppage time. Earlier Henrik Larsson had made an impressive debut and scored, before being taken off in the 70th minute for super-sub Solskjaer. Milan Baros' strike had looked like pegging United back to force a replay, before Kiraly's late error gifted them a 2-1 win.

Taken from Channelnewsasia - League cup! Baptista!

Football: Gunners hit Liverpool for six
Posted: 10 January 2007 0623 hrs

LIVERPOOL, England : Julio Baptista missed a penalty but still scored four goals as Arsenal booked a League Cup semi-final against north London rivals Spurs by destroying Liverpool 6-3 at Anfield on Tuesday.

Incredibly, Arsene Wenger's mix of young and second-string players became the first team since Sunderland in 1930 to score six times at Anfield, while Baptista became the first visiting player to claim four goals at the famous stadium since the end of World War II.

Brazilian striker Baptista, who had failed to score a domestic goal for Arsenal since his loan move from Real Madrid in the summer, ended his drought in spectacular style as Wenger's team claimed their second cup victory at Anfield in four days.

Further Gunners goals from Jeremie Aliadiere and Alexandre Song completed a memorable win for Arsenal, with two Steven Gerrard goals and a Sami Hyypia header making the score slightly respectable for the home side.

Although Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez had been set to field his youngsters in the original game, which was postponed due to heavy fog last month, Saturday's 3-1 FA Cup defeat against Arsenal at Anfield had left the League Cup as Liverpool's most realistic route to silverware this season and he recalled the big guns for this game.

Liverpool's hopes suffered a blow, however, when Chilean winger Mark Gonzalez was stretchered off on ten minutes with his right leg in a splint after falling badly following a challenge Theo Walcott.

And the home side's nightmare start continued when Arsenal took the lead against the run of play with their first effort on goal on 27 minutes.

French striker Aliadiere sprung the offside trap to latch onto Kolo Toure's long ball forward and an impeccable first touch by the 23-year-old allowed him to shoot goalwards.

His initial effort was blocked by Jerzy Dudek, but Aliadiere reacted instantly to slot the rebound into the net at The Kop End.

It was harsh on Liverpool considering their dominance of possession, but Fowler managed to drag them level on 32 minutes when he beat keeper Manuel Almunia with a typical poacher's goal from close range.

Almunia had palmed away Fabio Aurelio's free-kick, but Garcia pounced on the rebound and his square ball was flicked into the net by Fowler at the near post.

Liverpool's equaliser only sparked an incredible three-goal rout by Arsenal that left Wenger's team 4-1 up by half-time.

The Gunners regained the lead on 40 minutes thanks to a stunning free-kick by Baptista which left Dudek rooted to the spot from 30 yards.

A scrambled goal by Song from a corner made it 3-1 in first-half stoppage time before Baptista bagged his second when, looking suspiciously offside, he latched onto Aliadiere's throughball before beating the helpless Dudek.

When referee Martin Atkinson awarded Arsenal a 56th minute penalty following Hyypia's foul on Aliadiere, humiliation was seriously on the cards for Liverpool, but Dudek produced a brilliant save to keep out Baptista's spot-kick.

The powerful striker claimed his hat-trick four minutes later, though, when, after being fed superbly by Aliadiere, he beat Dudek with a low shot from 20 yards to score Arsenal's fifth.

Liverpool were now facing their worst defeat since losing 5-1 at home to Preston North End in September 1953, but Gerrard ensured they avoided that unwanted feat by scoring perhaps the goal of the game with a volley from the edge of the penalty area on 68 minutes.

The goal hardly raised a cheer from The Kop, though, and Liverpool's horror night was made even worse when Garcia was stretchered off in the closing stages with his leg in a splint, just like Gonzalez.

Hyypia gave the home fans faint hope of a remarkable comeback when he headed in to make 5-3 on 80 minutes, but Arsenal had the last word when Baptista hit his fourth after more good work by Aliadiere. - AFP/de

Not a surprising outcome given the team line-ups. But six is abit too much to bear [-X think Liverpool should be concerned with the injuries picked up by their players more.

Liverpool: Dudek, Peltier, Hyypia, Paletta, Warnock (Alonso 58), Guthrie, Gerrard, Aurelio, Gonzalez (Luis Garcia 11), Fowler, Bellamy, Luis Garcia (Carragher 75).
Subs Not Used: Reina, Crouch.

Goals: Fowler 33, Gerrard 68, Hyypia 80.

Arsenal: Almunia, Hoyte, Toure, Djourou, Traore (Connolly 88), Walcott (Diaby 74), Fabregas, Song Billong, Denilson, Julio Baptista, Aliadiere.
Subs Not Used: Poom, Lansbury, Randall.

Booked: Song Billong.

Goals: Aliadiere 27, Julio Baptista 40, Song Billong 45, Julio Baptista 45, 60, 84.

nevermind... everybody's been mocking me since morning... I juz told 'em Arsenal is the best team in the world... from wht I'd read it's another case of 6 chances and 6 goal kind of scenario (and more referree's biasness), so I'm not too disappointed, especially considering wht's at stake (Mickey Mouse Cup)... I'd watched the FA Cup, Arsenal don't deserve to win, but on well... anyway, think that Arsenal is a bit too physical (I thot they've shredded that bully playing style long ago)... now, Liverpool can concentrate on the league (UCL fingers crossed) :D

Leslie

Arsenal best team in the world? Not from the Premiership standings, they're not. Have to give it to Man Yoo this season lah, consistently performing.

Arsenal getting better physically, even though got no replacement for Viera ... but recent games have shown that if anything, they are still prone to getting pushed around by teams who don't have the same level of technical flair and substitute with hard play. Why do you think teams like Bolton have a more than fair chance of grabbing a point or even three when they play Arsenal ... >_<

I do like Arsenal's style of play, but they also have to learn to deal with the teams who come in to games hoping to whack their way to victory.

I hope Garcia and warnock injuries are not too serious, See Garcia face like he's in a lot of pain and warnock still got to relied on oxygen to substain conscious. Poor guys.

Beckham agrees five-year $250m LA Galaxy deal

David Beckham will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season and join side Los Angeles Galaxy on a £128million ($250 million) five-year deal.

The former England captain will leave Real in June and begin his new career in Major League Soccer in August.

Beckham said in a statement: 'This week, Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract by a further two seasons.

'After discussing several options with my family and advisers to either stay here at Madrid or join other major British and European clubs, I have decided to join the Los Angeles Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year.

'I would like to thank the supporters and people of Madrid who have made my family and I feel so welcome in my time here, making this an extremely difficult decision to make.

'I have enjoyed my time in Spain enormously and I am extremely grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to play for such a great team and their amazing fans.

'I am proud to have played for two of the biggest clubs in football and I look forward to the new challenge of growing the world's most popular game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own.

'For the rest of this season I will continue to give 100% to my coach, team mates and fans as I believe Fabio Capello will bring this club and its supporters the success they truly deserve.'

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42447000/jpg/_42447955_ars.jpg

Arsenal shook off an early disadvantage right from the 12th minute, when Gilberto was sent-off for reacting to Robbie Savage (who only got Yellow) who ran a rough double-tackle into him. The Gunners played well to stay on top of the game. First goal coming from a superb Toure's header, placed beyond a stranded Friedel off the near post via a floated pin-point free-kick from Thierry Henry. 1-0 up Half-Time.

Benedict McCarthy and young lad Matt Derbryshire were the most threatening up front for Rovers as Blackburn had a few chances themselves to draw level. Pedersen also created a few opportunities but Arsenal defence played well today. Justin Hoyte is still seen hoofing and mis-directing passes. Rosicky played well and was full of energetic running today.

Arsenal then hit the second on a counter attack where Henry drew out defenders on the left flank and eased a one-two with Cesc Fabregas before firing a diagonal blast near edge of the box, past the keeper (who got a hand to it) bouncing in off the crossbar. Mark Hughes sent on Nonda to little impact. The visitors showed grit and determination that even bad weather and numerical disadvantage will not stop them from bagging the three points.

Lauren departs Arsenal for Portsmouth

Arsenal can confirm that Lauren has signed for Portsmouth for an undisclosed fee.

Lauren, who is 30 on Friday, signed for Arsenal from Spanish side Real Mallorca in May 2000 and during his time with the Gunners made 241 appearances, playing an integral role in the Club winning two Premiership titles, three FA Cups, two Community Shields and remaining unbeaten throughout the entire 2003/04 Premiership season.

Originally a central midfielder, Lauren (full name Laureno Bisan-Etame Mayer) was one of the most consistent right full-backs in the Premier League during his time with the Club, with his versatility also enabling him to play a role in midfield and at left full-back on occasions.

Lauren, who was voted in the PFA Team of the Year for 2003/2004, made 22 appearances for Cameroon before retiring from international football in 2002, after winning two African Cup of Nations, an Olympic gold medal and representing his country at the 2002 World Cup Finals.

Lauren’s last appearance for the Arsenal first team was on 21st January 2006, in last season’s Carling Cup semi-final second leg against Wigan Athletic, before a knee injury and subsequent operation ruled the defender out of action for almost a year.

An excellent penalty taker, Lauren will always be remembered for his calm penalty conversion in the 86th minute to secure a vital 2-1 Highbury win over Tottenham Hotspur in April of the 2002 ‘double’ winning year.

On Lauren’s departure, Arsène Wenger said: “Lauren’s contribution to Arsenal since he joined the Club in 2000 has been absolutely outstanding. He has been a central figure in the Club winning the Premiership twice and the FA Cup three times and his high level of performances have made sure that he will always have a place in Arsenal history. On behalf of the players and staff we wish Lauren the best of luck at Portsmouth.”

Lauren said: “I have made many great friends and have many wonderful memories from the years I have spent at Arsenal. I have enjoyed great success with the Club and I am very grateful to Arsène Wenger, my team mates and all the fantastic Arsenal fans for their support. The fans have been brilliant. Of course I am sad to be leaving Arsenal, but am I am very much looking forward to a new challenge at Portsmouth.”

Everyone at Arsenal Football Club wishes Lauren the best of luck during his time with Portsmouth.

clearly CHELSEA problem surface in central defence/ midfield.

W Makelele out thru suspension n Carvalho unavailable w fever, Mourinho deployed Essien in central defence !

While Ballack n Lampard were to pair in central midefield, Ballack (again) was hardly impressive. the pair din make any significant contribution.

Instead, e introduction of Wright Philips was impressive. he was e one few whom managed 2 cause some problems for e Reds.

:D
e most embarrassing moment - e free kick by Drogba where miscommunication occured btw Ballack n Drogba. =))

Pool defence record at home is IMPRESSIVE. onli concealin 3 goals thus far ! -
which onli e match agast blackburn resulted in a DRAW. e other 2 came fm Westham n Villa which Pool won 2-1 and 3-1 respectively !

Even their away defence record is not tt bad either - 13. its their inablility 2 score durin e early season tt caused them losin points. Reason : - Benitez inconsistent strategies of tinkerin players position - Gerrard play position on e right, e strikin partnership btw Kuyt, Crouch n Bellamy.

This win for Pool is a major one. now 4 points clear off gunners. They will ve 2work hard on those away games. :D

Im 1 happy LIVERPOOL fan !

Liverpool's win against Chelsea is really good for me :)
better than beating MU, imo... I still remember how Mourninho used to gloat when his team defeated Liverpool... one of games, Drogba handball in penalty box, and other decisions going against Liverpool, they won it marginally, and Mourninho claimed that Chelsea deserved to win... blah :shooting: :shooting:

Rare praise from the Special One

from LFC website
JOSE: WE STRUGGLED TODAY
Paul Eaton 20 January 2007
Jose Mourinho had no complaints after watching his side be outplayed and beaten by Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.
Chelsea's lead over Liverpool in the league table has been cut to just five points after goals from Dirk Kuyt and Jermaine Pennant secured a well deserved victory for Rafael Benitez's men.

Chelsea rarely threatened as an attacking force but it was at the back - where Paolo Ferreira and Michael Essien formed a makshift central defensive - where Mourinho felt his side had most problems.

He said: "Liverpool are happy today and they deserve to be happy because they played well and deserved to win the game.

"I was hoping we could get through the first 15 minutes without conceding because we had players playing out of position and those players would have gained confidence if we'd made a good start.

"When we went behind after a few minutes and then conceded another shortly after we knew it was going to be very difficult.

"Rafa isn't stupid and I'm not a magician. We had no central defenders and I knew two weeks ago that Crouch and Kuyt would play in this game. The defenders we have could have coped with Bellamy but they couldn't cope with Crouch winning the headers and Kuyt's strength holding the ball up.

"In other games of late we've been able to cope but I knew we'd have problems today and Liverpool did very well."

yep ..Arsenal really gave it all. The reaction from Fergie when Henry scored is precious!!

too bad rvp broke his foot...but I think Adebayor and Baptista ..will be adequate replacements ..who knows ..with the enforced break ..RVP may come back in the end of season run in ..as strong as Henry has shown recently

wrong... may S'pore win :pray2:
even if S'pore play lousily, may S'pore win :pray2:
even if M'sia has more shots on goal, may S'pore win :pray2:
even if S'pore has no shot on goal, may S'pore win :pray2: (possible mah, M'sia OG  )

anyway, this is a 2-legged match... a draw with 1 or 2 away goals is a good result for S'pore :)

I wonder how much improvement Singapore will dish out in this match. I feel Singapore football is a milking cow for the Singapore pool. Did very little improvements over the years. Some players really.............:|

The only chinese you see in SG 1st 11 line-up today is a Mainlander who I believe should be boot out for lousy field performances. He play like a school boy with not pride and nothing to lose dun know if he too is another "sports person" with connects like Lee Ja Wei (the table tennis player whose dad is a chinese diplomat)

Well..actually the other chinese you see in the first 11, is the keeper, Lionel Lewis , who plays decently though. w/o him, I think Singapore would have conceded a lot more gols.

The current coach , Raddy, has done quite a good job ever since he has been in charge ... the team was in the doldrums , since the stars like, Fandi, Malek , retired. But with the coach , we manage to win the Tiger Cup two years ago, and has become extremely difficult to beat, even when facing the strong Asian teams ...

In the recent qualifiers...Singapore held mighty China to a goaless draw at home and was only beaten 1-0 by a controversial stoppage time penalty in China. In addition, they also managed to beat Iraq 2-0 (a middle-east pwr house).

In the past, we would never have been able to achieve such results. So, things are looking up for the moment... moreover ...when was the last time Singapore actually scored 11 goals (even with Fandi n Co, we did not achieve that)
