Hooray for the end of the long running saga of Chelsea & Ashley Cole. I agree that it is a good deal to get Gallas in exchange for Ashley. The Gunners really lack experienced defender in the central position & not forgetting that Flamini is a good deputy in the left back position and waiting for Clichy to return to full fitness. By the way, Gallas is getting the No. 3 Shirt while Julio Baptista is getting the No.9 shirt. :hello:

Materazzi reveals details of Zidane World Cup slur
MILAN, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Italy defender Marco Materazzi has revealed the content of the verbal exchange he had with Zinedine Zidane which led to the headbutt from the Frenchman and his sending off in July's World Cup final.
Materazzi said it was mention of Zidane's sister which prompted the butt from the France midfielder which left Italy's opponents down to 10 men before their defeat on penalties.
'I did not provoke him, I responded verbally to a provocation,' Materazzi told the daily Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday.
'We both spoke and I wasn't the first. I held his shirt but don't you think it is a provocation to say that 'if you want my shirt I will give it you afterwards'?
'I replied to Zidane that I would prefer his sister, that is true. I brought up his sister and that wasn't a nice thing, that is true,' said Materazzi.
'Thankfully there are tens of footballers who could confirm that much worse things are said on the field,' added the Inter Milan defender.
France host Italy in a European Championship qualifier on Wednesday but neither Zidane nor Materazzi will feature.
Zidane, who has retired as a player, was fined 7,500 Swiss francs ($6,014) and handed a three-match ban by FIFA's five-man disciplinary committee following the July 9 final.
As he is no longer a player, he offered to undertake three days of community service on FIFA's behalf as part of their humanitarian activities, which the committee accepted.
Materazzi was handed a two-match ban and fined 5,000 Swiss francs ($4,010). His sentence was fiercely criticised in Italy.
The Italy defender said that while he had told FIFA he was willing to make a gesture of reconciliation with Zidane, he was not going to apologise.
'He has not apologised to me and I certainly don't have to apologise to him. If anything, I owe apologies to his sister, although I swear, before all this mess I didn't even know Zidane had a sister,' he said.
Materazzi said that he thought the two could put the incident behind them.
'If peace can be made after terrible wars can Zidane and I not make peace? A peace between men, without much publicity, certainly yes.
'The door of my house will always be open to him and if he wants, Zidane knows how to find out my address,' said Materazzi.

Chelsea are liars, says ex-boss Ranieri
Sep 08, 2006
The Straits Times
LONDON - FORMER Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri has come to the defence of William Gallas. And the Italian has accused the English champions of lying.
Ranieri, who signed the French defender from Marseille in 2001, said that he could not believe what Chelsea said about the player earlier this week. The Premiership club had accused the central defender of threatening the Blues following his feud with manager Jose Mourinho.
They claimed he even threatened to score an own goal if he was not allowed to leave Stamford Bridge. 'I cannot believe these stories,' The Sun quoted Ranieri as saying on Wednesday. 'I signed William and he was always a good professional - on and off the pitch.
'Of course, I don't know what has happened in the last two years. But this is incredible and I don't believe it.' Gallas, 29, who moved to Arsenal just minutes before last week's transfer deadline, has denied Chelsea's claims and accused them of 'lacking class'.
The Telegraph, meanwhile, revealed that he was the only first-team player not to receive a pay increase after Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003. He was earning some £25,000 (S$75,000) a week.
The player's father, Simbert, has also spoken out to defend him. 'I know my son through and through - and he is totally incapable of doing any of the things Chelsea say,'' said Gallas senior.
'I am a father who likes to stay in the background and let William do his own talking when he has to. 'But, when it comes to an attack on his honour and that of the family, like this, I can talk of my belief in him. 'I have already spoken to William about what Chelsea are saying about him. But I am not worried for him. He is a man who can stand up for himself.'
The Football Association has decided not to intervene in the row between club and player. Meanwhile, former Arsenal boss Terry Neill believes Gallas' move to the Emirates Stadium will help the Gunners push for honours, reports The Sun. Said Neill, manager at Highbury from 1976 to 1983: 'Arsenal have done exceptionally well - at the 11th, 12th and maybe 13th hour - with their signings.'
Neill, 64, is still seen in and around Arsenal, and remains close to Arsene Wenger's assistant, Pat Rice. The Gunners' other last-minute transfer was Julio Baptista. He came in from Real Madrid on loan with Jose Antonio Reyes going the other way, while Pascal Cygan moved to Villarreal for £2 million.
Former Arsenal manager reacts to the current transfer dealings at the club
Former Arsenal manager Terry Neill brands the current transfer saga around William Gallas as "disrespectful to football".
Neill doesn't feel that the current talk in the newspaper and claims about this and that is good for the game.
Both players has now agreed terms with their new clubs and just forget it and go on with life.
Neill was in charge at Arsenal from 1976 to 1983 and during this time Arsenal played in three FA Cup finals and won the one in 1979 against Man Utd.
Arsenal could be sold tomorrow
With control of the Club resting with so few individuals, the Gunners could be ripe for a buyout
By Nigel Phillips of the Arsenal Supporters Trust
With the wall of overseas cash said to be coming to buy FAPL clubs it is worth asking the question, "Is Arsenal out of reach?" Obviously not as the Glazers paid £790m for ManUre even if about £580m of this was borrowed money secured against the club's future income.
Chavski were bought for £140m (£60m for the shares, of which Bates got £17m) and £80m to pay off the loan that they were said to be about to default on that summer. The £500m spent on players plus the huge operating losses take the overall supermarket sweep at the Club to over £750m.
The whole of Aston Villa has been valued at £62.5m although Randy still only has undertakings to buy 85.5% of the shares.
Could West Ham be bought for £80m or £90m? The same figure is being banded around for a controlling interest in Newcastle. Portsmouth was about £20m.
What about Arsenal? The current implied value of the Arsenal shares in issue is £285m. However if you want to buy someone's house the mortgage they might have is irrelevant to the buyer, they have to pay the market value. Arsenal have close to £300m of debt giving a total Club value of close to £600m. The Highbury Square development could net the Club £100m which will reduce the debt and should have an impact on the share price, assuming the overall value of the Club is to be maintained.
The increased revenue projected to be earned at the new stadium and the near 70% increase in the TV money for the three seasons from 07/08-09/10 are positives for the Club.
Are the Arsenal shareholders "sellers" at the right price? Who knows what the long-term intentions of the directors are? Danny Fiszman owns 25%, Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith 16%, and David Dein 15%. Together with family associates and the ITV 10% (which is up for sale) the 75% needed for overall control is in the hands of few. The Arsenal Supporters Trust is actively seeking to broaden the ownership of the Club to more supporters as well as trying to unite the current small shareholders.
Villa supporters have welcomed Lerner, Chavski appear to love Roman's cash but one can always have too much of a good thing! The verdict on Glazer is mixed at best. Time will tell on this one although it is hard to see how burdening a debt free club with so much borrowed money and the cash needed to service this can be a good thing.
Of course Arsenal is affordable. It does not have to be a mega rich individual, rather a consortium of loaded investors. The Middle East money will be able to see inside Arsenal given the 15 year Emirates (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) deal. All it needs is willing sellers and a willing buyer.
Tevez and Mascherano Was Free Transfer
If the Telegraph are to be believed (and I don't see any reason why not) then the details of West Ham's Tevez and Mascherano deal are as follows:
- The deal was a free transfer from Corinthians to West Ham, although West Ham paid around £5 million in agents' fees.
- A clause in the contract specifies that West Ham have to sell if a bid comes in at any time in the next five years.
- The transfer met Fifa regulations and the players are on normal West Ham salaries.
- Georgian billionaire Badri Patarkatsishvili 'owns' 100 per cent of Tevez and 50 per cent of Mascherano, the other half being 'owned' by Globo, the Brazilian television company.
- Patarkatsishvili has described the West Ham deal as "rental", though a five-year lease would be more accurate.
Seems the best hope of Tevez and Mascherano staying at West Ham is if the suggested takeover by Middle Eastern billionaires takes place, giving the club enough clout to purchase the players outright. Otherwise I don't see them sticking around too long.

'I'm not greedy' insists £80k-per-week Cole
Ashley Cole insists his controversial transfer from Arsenal to Chelsea was not motivated by personal greed. Cole fears his image has been damaged by the saga which finally ended on transfer deadline-day last week.
The England left-back has found himself portrayed as a money-grabber who turned his back on the club he supported as a boy in return for Chelsea's millions. He has signed a five-year deal, reported to be worth £80,000 a week, but claims money was not the reason for his move.
Cole, 25, said: 'I know full-well that I'm not a greedy person. I've not come here for money. 'I've come here because I want to win things and I have a good chance of winning things at Chelsea.
'It had nothing to do with money and greed and not being loyal.
'I know I can wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and know I'm not a bad person.'

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42068000/jpg/_42068368_gallas300.jpg
It's a game to be forgotten as Arsenal continues to look for that elusive premiership victory at the Emirates Stadium. A classy one-two move on 21 minutes put James Morrison through who toe curled past Lehmann (who otherwise had a quiet game). His counterpart Mark Schwarzer pulled off a string of excellent saves to keep Middlesborough in the game. Arsenal was not attacking as fast as they could. Someone should get Johan Djourou to train on his acceleration.
The visitors put five midfielders across and played with ten defenders at times, but did well to contain the lethargic gunners who kept up with their trademark fluent passing game yet failed in the final third. William Gallas looked lively and could fit right into his role with Arsenal.
Captain George Boateng's (64min) unnecessary trip on Ljungberg got him his second yellow and that's when Arsenal decided to take the initiative for attack. Eboue was fouled for a penalty which Henry converted. Wenger sent on Tomas Rosicky, Emmanuel Adebayor and Julio Baptista for the final moments but it was not to be. Just for the record - Arsenal had 24 attempts on goals (12 on target) as opposed to Middlesborough with 1 attempt which was converted :o
Next game on, Hamburg SV :yeah:

Riquelme retires from international football
BUENOS AIRES, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Argentina playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme announced his international retirement on Wednesday at the age of 28, citing family reasons.
Riquelme, an elegant midfielder whose performances have split critics down the middle, said he had taken the shock decision because of his mother, who has been suffering from health problems.
'Since the World Cup, my mother has been taken to hospital twice and my responsibility is to take care of her,' said Riquelme.
'It was an easy decision to make. My family comes before the football,' said Riquelme, who captained the team which lost 3-0 to Brazil in a friendly this month, their first under new coach Alfio Basile.
'It will hurt me deeply not to wear the Argentina shirt again but my mother's health comes first,' said Riquelme, who quit the team at an age when most players are at their peak.
Riquelme said he feared criticism of his Argentina performances may have worsened his mother's health.
'There's been a lot of bad blood and I don't want to make her suffer,' he said.
'My mother is my mother and I can't compare her with the Argentina shirt or anything else.'
Riquelme, who plays his club football in Spain for Villareal, won 37 caps in an international career which spanned nine years.
Riquelme's admirers say he can control the pace of a game and prize open tough defences with his incisive passing. Critics say he drifts out of games and has been found wanting on the big occasion.
He was left out of the 2002 World Cup by coach Marcelo Bielsa but, four years later, he was the central figure in Jose Pekerman's team which reached the quarter-finals in Germany before losing on penalties to the hosts.
Although he played majestically in the opening games against Ivory Coast and Serbia & Montenegro, against whom he was named man of the match after the 6-0 rout, he faded against Germany and was substituted.
Riquelme began his club career with Boca Juniors, before joining Barcelona in 2002. He failed to settle and moved to smaller Spanish club Villareal.
After winning the World Youth Cup with Argentina in 1997, he made his full international debut the same year.
However, he played intermittently until Pekerman took charge in October 2004.
Riquelme said he had told Basile of his decision. 'My duty was to tell him and thank him for picking me for the first game,' he said.
'It was a very short chat. I told him what I thought and he understood.'

Full time. Arsenal bring back the three points courtesy to a single goal four minutes from time, scored by Emmanuel Adebayor, so reminescence of the Silvane Wiltord title winning goal from 2002. From early on you could sense that an Old Trafford upset was on the cards as Tomasz Kuszczak gave away a penalty for a foul on Adebeyar with just 12 minutes into the game. The goalkeeper however, atoned by saving the spot kick by Arsenal Captain Gilberto Silva.
Hleb and Rosicky looked lively throughout the game with their energy running. It was a good match to watch as both teams played with open, attacking football with opportunities for both sides. Baby face Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might have equalised if not for Jens Lehmann's super save which deflected the ball just beyond the far post and it was rather amusing to see Lehmann with his usual antics, tugging at John O'Shea's shirt etc.
Julio Baptisa came on as substitute and had two chances not converted and he seemed to lack pace. Wayne Rooney had a quiet game. Based on the goal attempts, you might think United played the better game. Shots (on Goal) Manchester United - 19(9) / Arsenal - 14(7). I would think the men of the match goes to the Arsenal Midfield who controlled the pace and played very well collectively

What to expect from the 2 top teams competing with each other, entertainment to the last minute. Arsenal desperately needed this win after their worst start to the campaigne. Man United were riding on the perfect winning start so far. It's kinda ironic Arsenal halt Man united's streak when it was them who put a stop to Arsenal 49 game unbeaten record.
Truly happy for the gunners as this is a massive win for them, not only for the 3 points, but this will do a great deal to lift their confidence. For Man United, although they lose, they still lay in second place on 12 points.
Nothing much seperating the 2 teams, a number of miss chances with good goalkeeping from the 2 keepers. Football is the winner tonight.
after yesterday royal rumble, portsmouth are on the top of the table....:supz:
Yesterday, Arsenal played without Henry, I thought they will lose their main threat forward, but in fact they played better without him IMO, the gunners have other players they can pass to besides Henry, which makes the attack more unpredictable in a sense.

Given to leave hospital after horror injury
Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given is expected to leave hospital on Saturday as he continues his recovery from surgery to repair a tear in his bowel. The 30-year-old Irishman had an operation in London on Monday a day after being injured in a collision with West Ham striker Marlon Harewood.
Magpies boss Glenn Roeder has been in touch with Given, and today revealed he should be discharged from hospital tomorrow before heading back to the north-east.
Roeder said: 'Shay will be leaving hospital in the morning and be travelling back up to Newcastle.
'He has started to feel a lot better over the last couple of days. Even after the operation, he was in a fair amount of pain from surgery and needed to keep taking the pain-killers.
'I have spoken to him every day and he is feeling a lot better.'
Given will be out for around six weeks, but will begin his rehabilitation over the next few days.
Roeder said: 'Once we get him back up here at the weekend, then probably early next week, he can come back to the training ground.
'I know the surgeon and he said he had done a neat and tidy job, made the incision as small as possible so he can recover as quickly as possible.
'We are probably looking at around six weeks until Shay will be fit again.'

From Soccernet forums ...
There are three premiership teams stranded in a desert
- Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.
They have been there for one week when they finally come across a dead camel.
The Man United players say 'As we're ManCHESTer United, we'll have the chest.'
The Liverpool players say 'As we're LIVERpool, we'll have the liver.'
'We're not hungry,' say the Arsenal players.

So Arsenal finally won at the Emirates Stadium and despite the flattering scoreline, the Gunners did not played to their best tempo. Arsenal started brightly but as the game moved on, the feeling of "going-to-be-another-one" starts to sink in with United throwing many men behind the ball in defence.
William Gallas had a few chances and eventually broke the stalemate on the 65th minute after a weighted Henry chip into the box half controlled by Fabregas and then smashed in gleefully by him. Phil Jagielka did not have a good game and was even more unfortunate to turn Henry's cross into his own goal. Arsenal fans were soon rooting for a third. True enough Baptista flicked the ball to the right wing for the ever-energetic Eboue, whose pin-pointed cross found Thierry Henry for a smashing header past Ian Bennett.
Ljungberg played very well in the game with Hleb, Van Persie and Baptista being used substitutes for today and with the pending return of players like Senderos and Walcott, Arsenal will need to re-think about their strongest squad.

Charlton Athletic 1 Arsenal 2
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42148000/jpg/_42148738_rvan_pa.jpg
Robin van Persie. A name to remember for this game as it was his two superb goals that saw the Gunners came away with three points, but only just. Charlton took the lead as Darren Bent tapped-in from a direct Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's far post cross, having beaten the offside trap.
On the 32nd minute, Henry passed to Hleb in the box whose nifty, controlled footwork gave the ball to van Persie who found time to set himself, before delivering a low drive back into the bottom corner for the equaliser. Three minutes into the second half, again Alexander Hleb combined with Eboue with maximum effectiveness on the right, who crossed perfectly for van Persie to strike his unstoppable left-footed rocket past Scott Carson. Despite the two goals, Carson made some impressive saves.
Charlton was not going to let the fans down and came back with a few notable chances in the second half, with Hasselbaink (wasteful) and even had an legitimate penalty appeal after Kevin Lisbie's overhead kick was blocked by the raised arm of William Gallas but the referee said no. Van Persie missed out on his hat-trick side footing wide Henry's goal line cross. Henry also failed to convert from a dreadful mix-up between goalkeeper and Jonathan Fortune which allowed a free shot under six-yards.
Most of the Charlton attack came on the right, taking full advantage of the disappointing Justin Hoyte. Lehmann had made a couple of good saves to keep the visitors in the lead. Hasselbaink was remonstrating to the referee several times in the game and considering his inability to convert the chances supplied to him, he seems a striker past his prime.
van pesie is really getting better and better, i think he can replace henry place already...
