Ferguson 'flabbergasted' by Coventry defeat

Bitterly disappointed Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he was 'flabbergasted' by his side's stunning Carling Cup exit to Coventry at Old Trafford tonight.

Although he completely changed the team which beat Chelsea on Sunday, Ferguson still named six full internationals in his starting line-up, including £34million duo Nani and Anderson.

Yet the Red Devils totally failed to impose themselves on the contest and ultimately fell to a goal in each half from Coventry's Malta international 'mosquito' Michael Mifsud, whose bite certainly left Ferguson in pain.

'I was absolutely flabbergasted by that performance,' said Ferguson.

'I did not expect that at all. I am not interested in giving reasons or mitigating circumstances. It was just a very bad performance.'

After spending the last 18 months hailing his emerging talent, Ferguson could scarcely understand what went so badly wrong.

Aside from Nani and Anderson, both of whom were major disappointments, Chris Eagles was also poor, as was Dong Fangzhou, who came closest to scoring for the hosts with a header Coventry keeper Andy Marshall pushed wide just before Mifsud fired home his second.

'We have trumpeted these young lads a lot, so what has happened tonight was a big shock for us all,' admitted Ferguson.

'You want to give these boys a chance and we have not had the opportunity to do that.

'The number of Coventry fans who came made it a real cup-tie atmosphere and maybe that was an issue for some of our players because in the first half, we were second to every ball.'

The Sky Blues' 11,000-strong travelling army was a reminder of their Premier League past.

Yet Iain Dowie's side currently find themselves in the middle of the Championship, thereby becoming the first lower league side to beat United at Old Trafford since York City famously knocked three goals past them 12 years ago.

'This will go down as a great night for Coventry,' said Dowie.

'I have been here as a player and a manager and never done that well, so hopefully this result will give us all some belief because I felt we deserved it.'

Dowie was anxious not to spend too much time reflecting on the United players who were omitted by Ferguson, preferring instead to concentrate on the men Coventry beat.

Not even the introductions of Michael Carrick and Wes Brown could halt the Red Devils' slump, with Mifsud agonisingly close to becoming the first visiting player to score a hat-trick at Old Trafford since legendary Brazilian Ronaldo.

'The big credit for us was that we forced Manchester United to make their changes early,' said Dowie.

'They had all three substitutes on within 55 minutes, which tells you something in itself.

'You are bound to benefit when you are playing a team without Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Nemanja Vidic but Sir Alex still picked a team he felt was good enough to win.

'Arsenal picked a team full of youngsters last night and they still won, so you can't argue Manchester United were anything other than a great side.'

For Mifsud it was a special night. The 26-year-old has now scored twice against both Carlisle and United in this competition, yet he is still to start a league game for the Midlands outfit this term.

'Michael can be a real pest around the box,' said Dowie, referring to the former Lillestrom player's strange nickname.

'At times he is almost too quick but he is getting calmer all the time and his finishing is improving too.'

well ... expectations for the player naturally tends to be higher when they have a hefty transfer fee tied to them ..in this case ..Nani was bought for about 17 million pounds...and till now ..he has yet to justify that price tag

Lest we forget, the standard and tempo of football is very different between the EPL and PL, it does take time to settle. It's just like us changing jobs, we also need time to settle in a new working environment. Let's give them some time before we start :shooting: them down.

thats true ..EPL football though is a lot more fast paced ..its action a second ...hence many of the 'skillful' players find it easier to adapt to Spanish and Italian lg ..where there is more time to dwell on the ball ...rather than the EPL ...

Man Utd boss Ferguson has Anderson concerns
tribalfooball.com - September 27, 2007

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is concerned that £17 million signing Anderson is some way from being a first team regular.

The Guardian says Ferguson had angry words with the entire team after Wednesday's Carling Cup defeat at home to Coventry City, but he was particularly aggrieved about Anderson's ineffectual display and is concerned at how the new arrival is struggling to make a favourable impression.

Anderson suffered the ignominy of being substituted at half-time in his only Premier League appearance, the 1-0 victory over Sunderland on September 1, but Ferguson expected the attacking midfielder to play an important role in the experimental and youthful side he chose against Coventry. Instead, Anderson was one of the weaker players, often off the pace and, most disappointingly for his manager, showing little desire.

Ferguson has told his colleagues it may be a year before the player, a full Brazil international, is ready to seriously challenge for a first-team place, an astonishing admission given the amount of money it took to sign him from Porto.

Now even the boss is concern....

Perhaps he should follow Arsene's methods ..take youthful unknown players and then nurture them for a few years before unleashing them ... like that ..there is less pressure ..in terms of huge outlay ..both on the manager as well as the player himself

Really have to admit that Wenger and his scouts does have a eye for raw talents, look what magic he has done to the careers of Viera, Kanu, Henry, Cole etc... Fergie does have a eye for young talent too (think abt the young team of Beckham, Scholes and Giggs) but think that he wants to go out in a bang and not go thru the transition phase but was quite surprise that he let Rossi leave. He's definitely better than Dong Fang Zhou.

I think Rossi left prob because he was home sick too .. I remember Arsenal had a talented striker .. it boils down to timing then ..if he had stayed with Man U ...and looking at the striker crisis they had couple of weeks back ..Rossi would prob have been given the chance to start n perhaps shine n stake a claim for himself ...well anyway ..now that he is back on home soil and scoring gols ..it may be easier for him to break into the national team later on

Kaka named FIFPro world player of the year

MILAN, Oct 5 (Reuters) - AC Milan forward Kaka was named FIFPro World Player of the Year on Friday for inspiring his side to a seventh European Cup win in May.

More than 45,000 professional footballers throughout the world, members of the players' union FIFPro, were invited to vote in the annual awards which are in their third year.

The 25-year-old Brazilian was instrumental in Milan's Champions League triumph, ending up top scorer with 10 goals including three in the semi-final win over Manchester United.

Kaka, the subject of an unsuccessful bid from Real Madrid in the close season, was also a driving force in helping Milan to finish fourth in Serie A last term despite an eight-point deduction for match-fixing.

However, he missed Brazil's Copa America victory in July because he opted out of the tournament to rest.

Last year, Barcelona forward and fellow Brazil player Ronaldinho was named FIFPro World Player of the Year for the second time in succession.

'I am humbled to receive such an honour,' Kaka told reporters. 'To follow my good friend and such a great player as Ronaldinho makes this a very special award for me. To be recognised by my fellow professional players worldwide is amazing.'

FIFPro also announced their 2006/07 World XI on Friday:

Gianluigi Buffon (Italy/Juventus); Alessandro Nesta (Italy/AC Milan), Fabio Cannavaro (Italy/Real Madrid), John Terry (England/Chelsea), Carles Puyol (Spain/Barcelona); Steven Gerrard (England/Liverpool), Cristiano Ronaldo (England/Manchester United); Kaka (Brazil/AC Milan); Lionel Messi (Argentina/Barcelona), Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast/Chelsea), Ronaldinho (Brazil/Barcelona)

Struggling Bolton axe Lee after poor start

Bolton have parted company with manager Sammy Lee 'by mutual consent' after Wanderers' disappointing start to the season.

The Lancashire club have taken just five points from their first nine Barclays Premier League games, only goal difference keeping them off the bottom of the table.

Lee succeeded Sam Allardyce as manager at the Reebok Stadium towards the end of last season, with the latter later joining Newcastle.

General manager Frank McParland has also left the club.

Chairman Phil Gartside told the club's official website: 'This has been a difficult decision for all parties but we have agreed that the time is right.

'Sammy has played an important role in the club's recent history. We wish Sammy and Frank well for the future.

'Our efforts will now be to look for a replacement manager and to concentrate on the future.'

England like to do it the hard way... anyway, I'd never like McClaren, thot that he's a lousy manager juz by looking at his team selection... when he 1st came in, he appointed Terry as the team captain, big mistake coz Gerrard is by far a better candidate... don't think Gerrard is as motivated playing as a stand-in captain... the way McClaren chooses the players is like monkey see monkey do like dat... tho', I still hope to see him do well as a manager coz I prefer a British managing the England team...

Just finished watching the replay on cable.

I think when Slavia Prague sits back from the start playing a lone striker upfront is already a mistake, hence inviting the Gunners to attack. But Slavia was credited for trying to pass and score goals as well (Bought out 2 excellent saves from Alumnia) even though they were 6 goals down on 58th min.

Apart from the 3 yellow cards Arsenal players were awarded, It was a near perfect night for the Gunners, We had got players in form and depth in reserves. Most importantly, no new additions to the injury list.

Hopefully this is a Lucky Seven for the progressment to the UCL.

Go Gunners~

LONDON - Tottenham Hotspur have sacked their Dutch manager Martin Jol, the Premier League club said in a statement on Thursday.

"We can confirm that the board has this evening asked Martin Jol, the club manager, and Chris Hughton, the first team coach, to stand down from their positions with immediate effect," the statement read.

In a bizarre end to his three-year reign at the north London club, Jol was in the dugout for the 2-1 UEFA Cup defeat by Spanish side Getafe despite rumours circulating around the ground that he had already been sacked.

Fans sang the Dutchman's name in the closing stages as a stony-faced Jol stood largely in silence on the touchline.

Jol's departure has been widely tipped since Tottenham, regarded as potential top-four challengers this season after successive fifth-placed finishes, lost their opening league game against promoted Sunderland.

Tottenham officials were photographed meeting Seville's Juande Ramos in August, although chairman Daniel Levy publicly offered his backing to the beleaguered Jol.

The team's performances have not improved and a 3-1 defeat at Newcastle United on Monday left them third from bottom with just one win from their opening 10 games.

They have the second worst defensive record in the division.

"I can understand the position of the club in light of the results," Jol said on the club's Web site .

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Tottenham Hotspur is a special club and I want to thank the terrific staff and players. For me the fans were always amazing with their support so I would also like to say thank you -- I shall never forget them."

The club did not say who would replace Jol, although Ramos is expected to take over. Former Tottenham striker and current development coach Clive Allen will be in charge of the first team on Sunday at home to Blackburn Rovers.

PLAYING CAREER

Chairman Levy said sacking Jol and Hughton, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career with the club, had been regrettable.

"Our greatest wish was to see results turn in our favour and for there to be no need for change," Levy said.

"We feel honoured that Martin has been manager at our club, having seen us qualify twice for Europe.

"Chris has been with us since 1977, bar a three-year period, both as player and coach and he has been an excellent ambassador for the club.

"They have been professional, popular and respected members of the coaching staff and there will always be a warm welcome for them both at the Lane."

Jol originally joined Tottenham from Dutch side RKC Waalwijk in 2004 as assistant to Jacques Santini, but took over when the Frenchman left the club just three months into the season.

After years of mid-table mediocrity Jol revived Tottenham's fortunes in the league and they failed to make the Champions League qualifiers only on the final day of the 2005-06 season with a defeat at West Ham United.

He followed that with another fifth-place finish, raising hopes that Spurs could break the stranglehold of the established big-four teams in England, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.

I feel that clubs shldn't sack managers becoz of one poor season... moreover, the season is not over yet... the sacking of Jol is probably a good news for the top 4 clubs...

don't think it made much diffrence to the big 4 teams though ... a lot of the news about Spurs leapfrogging into the top 4 ..is I feel ..overplayed by the media ... frankly speaking ..compared to Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool and Chelsea ..there is still a big gap ...the only reason why Spurs were even any where close ..is because Arsenal were in transition the last few seasons when their star players departed.
Now finally having settled with a youthful team ..it will be back to norm ..Big 4 in the champs lg ..and the rest of the clubs fighting for crumps ..though Man C prob will beg to differ (having started so brightly under their new manager)
