over the weekend i was introduce to a dosage of another anime series: Gantz by a malay(what's with this, malays watching anime)

woah, the first episode already show boobies and suggested sex. the story is a bit qwerky. liked some people got transport to be contracted alien bounty hunter after near death. further watching the anime got me hook on the actions as well as sex.(two things that definitely sells anything.but the latter generating more interest). I have watch the anime till vol 2. along the way, i seen some graphic scene of voilence and more shagging(not that i haven't seen one). talk about voilent, i was quite taken aback when the bounty hunters are pitted against the Buddha statues. now that's something you don't see that often, exploding Buddha head.

now my question is does comics connection carry this title without the blackout mosiac censor. or any dinky stores selling the manga.or online source. i am sure the manga is more voilent that the anime version. and how the story goes along.

Gantz. The show itself has caused controversy on Japanese television for being over-the-top gory, violent, and sexual. Three episodes were spliced into two. I think that tells you just how shocking people found the show to be. The main controversy it’s stirring up in America, however, is its release schedule of two episodes a disc. The show is just too cool for words though, and after watching the disc once it’ll leave you mouth agape and frothing for more.

Gantz is a show about Kei and Kato, who have been hit, well, “torn to shreds” by a subway train while trying to save someone that had fallen on the tracks. What they didn’t expect is that they would appear in a room with other people who had also just died. In the room are six other guys and eventually one girl, who have nothing else in common with each other. All these people did die though with the intention that they would be recruited to become part of a game in the afterlife. In this first disc, they are assigned to hunt the Green Onion family and aren’t the slightest phased by the idea at all.

Playing the lead, Kei Kurono, is Chris Ayres. Kei is horny, quick to judge, and doesn’t care about more than himself. You could also say that for many of the people on the street. Those familiar with his deeper voice as heard in shows like Peacemaker, will be happy to know he has the range to play a high school student and play it very well. The show listens to a lot of the mental voice of Kurono, which shows the contrast of what he wants to say and what he actually does.

Masaru Kato, played by Illich Guardiola, is the guy who’s actually looking out for other people. He was a childhood friend of Kei, who was rather upset that Kato remembered him, but grew apart until they met each other again at the train station. He wants to rescue and save everyone, but with the type of people he’s around and that exist in this world, he’s in the minority. This is a different role of Guardiola’s for me: the hero without the smart-ass attitude and he’s doing a great job. I didn’t think his voice was a good fit when I first saw a picture of the character, but after hearing his first lines, I realized I was making a mistake.

Kei Kishimoto is played by newcomer Shannon Emerick, who doesn’t have many lines in this volume. The first lines we hear out of her are in a dazed state of waking up from death in the after life following with screams of terror. She’s the only girl of the group and in a show that goes to push the envelope, you can imagine she’ll be treated as an object more than once. Kei Kishimoto has all the questions we have and is appropriately freaked out asking them.

We’re briefly introduced to the group of people that Kurono, Kato, and Kishimoto appear before after they die. Masashi Yamada (Russell Freeman) is trying to keep together the group as a whole using a tone and speech he’s familiar with using on the grade school class he teaches. Goro Suzuki (Mike Kleinhenz) is an old politician thinking he’s going to be able to return to the real world and regain a seat in office. Joichiro Nishi (Chris Patton) is a young boy who knows more about what’s going on then he lets on. Imamori (Jay Hickman) is the pretty boy with a take no prisoners mindset and John Swasey and Rob Mungle play two yakuza members, Yoshioka and Hatanaka, respectively. John Swasey plays Yoshioka with a deep gruff voice that isn’t willing to answer any questions regarding the past. Hatanaka is another serious role for Rob Mungle, which have been a nice complement to his comedic roles. He has real talent and the more dramatic types have only been explored more within the past couple of years.

The script and language in the show is very crass and blunt. There’s more swearing being spoken than what is written in the subtitles, but I think it is much more fitting to the feel and tone of the show overall. The chemistry of the cast is very real feeling and you get the idea that these actors really did show up in a room after dying with a giant black egg in it.

Gantz is a cutting edge show that features an impressive dub from veterans and newcomers. There’s no doubt it’s controversial, but it’s a show that becomes as addictive to watch, as its opening song is to listen to. I kept getting the feeling watching this show that this wasn’t just a mindless gore-fest though. One of the extras on the disc is an interview with director Ichirou Itano where he says, “On the surface, it may appear to be just splatter and eroticism, but actually it deals a lot with the human essence.” I think he’s conveyed that nicely with the show thus far, and I’m glad to see not only is the directing of the show in capable hands, but the dub as well.

Gantz manga can be found in CC as well as Tian Di. Of course, some neighbourhood comic shops did brings in this title as well. Not sure about the anime though..

Well, anime is nothing comparing with the manga. Manga is more violence and u can sees all the bloody and brains/intestives parts etc.. :sweat:

Of course more nude scenes appeared in manga too... Manga is farly better than anime IMO..

PS * Those who r underage, better dun starts on renting or collecting this title. Else kenna caught by yr parents and lodged a complain again and causes banning of violence/sexually manga in future. I'll cursed u everynight and day :angry: Ok puts the joke aside now...

Gantz is a pretty dark and twisted story. something like battle royale story.

i find it interesting also because of how it's drawn. the team uses cg to design the background, leaving spaces for the artist to fill in the characters. so the art style of the building interiors have a very interesting 'precise' looks and it blends in welll with the hand-drawn art.

No benefits for them to helps u to brings the manga in. Somemore also quite inconvenient for them if u gets over 10 vols placing inside their luggage. Since they themselves also needs to get their own stuffs. There is a weight limits for individual luggage to holds if I'm not wrong.

Perhaps ask yr frens around whether they will be visiting TW and ask them to gets them for u.

So far the story didn't mention abt the existence of the sphere. But the objective, I believe, is to annihilate aliens. :supz:

Notice that 1 of the old players completed 100 pts and was given a revival? Then later he killed more pple and got himself killed so as to play the game 1 more time as well as bringing in more pple to play the game? :shooting:

Remembered them quoting that "Since this is an Adult Manga, thus the price is....". Seems to me that there's no discount or less discount if the mangas are M18 types.

I have also compared the Season 1 anime with the book. Season 1 ended in Book 5. So for Season 2.....Book 10??

Maybe the girl is an alien in disguised? After taking the costume out, no one can see them already? Just like the god statues in the temple. Everyone can see them until Gantz sends the team to wipe them out. Similarly to the Dinosaurs as well??

Er.....I dunno. Though I have the Season 1 anime (PC files), but very inconvenient to watch as the speed of sound does not match the video :bang: And I'm watching with a P3 laptop, that's even worst :cry:

That's why gave up watching the anime. Heard that Season 2 is out (for downloading) and there are DVDs of Season 1 available.

There are some rumours saying that the anime version might be censored. So.....censored abt violence/nudity, I dunno abt this :( But rumours are not stopping me from getting the DVD version of the anime ;)

Yap. Perhaps that why Gantz (The Black Sphere) deem these aliens as hostile. But whta's puzzling is that these aliens didn't do anything bad in the 1st place, why would Gantz wanna hunt them down?

Probably Gantz is from another planet and his planet is destroyed by these aliens he's back for a revenge?

Or maybe he's a alien-keeper and these aliens escaped. So either he had to catch them back or kill them. Remember that the team has 1 kinda weapon that can send the alien out to space?

Maybe the black sphere is the life support machine for that human instead ;)

yah, i liked this title alot. on top of the 20th century, this one is good. not to mention the incentives in seeing naked babe. it no wonder our censor stop them. most probably buy the entire series this coming sat and red it over the weekend. btw, what's the latest issue on sale at our local and at Taiwan? interested to know. As one of my friend is going up, i though of asking to get the issues not yet release in Singapore.

Because these aliens do exist in the real world. I mean the real world in the story. For my understanding these aliens might not have the intention to harm ordinary human, they are just living among them. It is just that when the gantz mission is activated, 玄野 and gang are sent to assassinate the aliens, the aliens feel offended thus they fight back.
Remember, when the mission is going on, the ordinary humans cannot see the aliens and gantz members with their naked eye, but they can feel their existence. This simply tells you that gantz mission is not a virtual reality game. It real. It do happens in the real world just that the humans can't see it when the mission is on.

juz re-read book 20. i tink there is a international gantz kind of 'competition' where each country sends it representatives over, as each country has a individual gantz or the black ball. thus when they r in their own country they try to score more pts to get better weapons 4 later purpose, which is i tink is v essential in e later part. then probably they'll be sent to some realm to fight some uber monster or sth.

This issue did slightly explained where the origin of the black sphere came from... And it is from German :thinking:

The anti-gantz(black suit) clan is really over exaggerate. Lots of members and also invicible with bullets :| Movements are fast and also able to transform to whatever creature to boost their abilities :bang:

Able to see the gantz members using their sun glasses when Gantz groups are invisible. The only weaknest are sunlight though...

Remember the scene where Xuan Ye using the torch like using a light sabre in star war :laugh: It made me laugh :laugh:

But I believed that he sure be back again in later parts where his buddy trying to score 100 pts to revive him :thinking:

its origin frm german meh? hmm.. but notice wad He Quan said to the guy who revived when they were on the train about proving himself as Japan's representative and the no. 1. If u read scans also u will realise its slowly revealing the story soon.

Actually I'm not too sure whether it is origin from German. But at least it did shows that there is a clan in German worship the black sphere and it shows the pic as evidence in the manga too :thinking:

She had a copy of herself in the real world. Then when she died fighting against the buddha monster Xuan Ye met the copy version of her. how come the others dun haf copies in real world?

According to the earlier part of the story, seems like the gal tried to commit suicide, but she ended up being saved instead. So the original person did not die. Maybe Gantz mis-calculated, thought that the real person will die, didn't predict that someone will actually save her from death.

For the rest, I believe they died without a chance of being saved. Eg. Like died from disease, or accident. That's instant death.

not really. got 2 of the vampire entered the gantz world by hugging the gantz member. they were then sent to a mission where they met another group of Gantz team. that team is damn strong with many of them getting 100 pts before n they chose more powerful weapons. they were supposed to kill the monsters which had a huge number n damn strong but the 2 vamps went to make a pact with the monsters to want to kill all the gantz. that's the overall guideline to it. its damn nice thou. waiting for the book 21 still..

no news on lead yet. but the new Gantz team is strong but they take drugs some more them then have some sort of twisted thinking that they are damn strong but a few got wiped out. they dun team up together, they just do it their way which they like.
