Did a personal website before 3 years back, now already shut it down, just extract this part on comics to share, hope everyone can share yours too :D Here goes the long story….. :director:
Since about 7-8 years old (early 80’s), I started to get in touch with comics. The most popular series among kids at that time was Lao Fu Zi / 老夫子 (aka Old Master Q) & Xiao Ding Dang / 小叮当 (aka Doraemon). Of course without money, most of them were borrowed from friends or smply read in any barber shops (familier isn't it?). Actually I can't understand much at that time, can only read and laugh.
Dragonball & Dragonquest saw me through the early secondary school days after it was introduced by one of my friend, where it became my favourite pastime and drawing them also adds some fun to it, although mostly I copied the original work as I have limited creativity.
1991, I discovered my 1st Hongkong comic, Dragonman / 龙神 by Khoo Fuk Lung. It was actually an advertisement in City Comics. At that time, there are 3 Singapore version of weekly compilations, City Comics/城市漫画 & Chuang Yi Comics/创艺漫画 by CY, and another Dong Fang Kuai Bao/东方快报 with all the HK titles (B/W and last for only 6 – 8 issues which I believe is not original). Bought my 1st Dragonman at Pearl's Centre in Chinatown, a small comic shop at level 1. That time comics shops were really rare, basically the market is just filled with Malaysia versions of HK comics, but the titles are really comprehensive, going for only $2 per book.
From than, I started my 'invasion' of HK comics till now, with a personal cap of 7 weekly titles maximum (basically drain all my money). My 1st weekly is Feng Yun/天下画集 #121 ( 风云死战最终回 ) at $2.20, SG version. Like it so much that I took on Black Panther/黑豹列传 the following week, 1st issue is #71 ( 黑太阳兵团 ) at $2, Msia Version. After a few issues, I ordered from 画一 ( SG publisher of 天下画集 ) the original HK version, and those were the maximum I can afford at that time.
Later got to know a few classmates (now already old friends exchanging comics) and start to poison the whole class (Technical stream, so all boys) until even the Malay friends also “read”. That time the most pass-around title is Street Fighter by Hui King Sum, also the most popular arcade game than. The time when I felt a boost is when Tony Wong came out of jail and started Jade Dynasty. They really gave a fresh look, being the 1st company to introduce white paper printing for comics at HK$10, the other companies were HK$8, so it was a really daring act.
The rest after that are already normal, just continue to buy, read and collect.
Too long may seem tiring, just some basic comic facts of myself, see if anyone similar
