We all know that HK, Japan and Western comics have a unique style that is more or less like that over the years, once you are shown a page, you know what country that comic is from.
Are SG artists still on the stage of finding their style? Or if there already exist a unique style, what kind of flavour is that and how are they able to make it interesting that people (local or overseas) will like it alot?
I did not read much local comic productions except for those 四格漫画, and more those local taste jokes will be what I usually like. Recently there is a red colour cover comic about $8+, cant remember who did it, but very cute, all on the local scene and really laugh at some of them. But I would prefer to see a comic with longer story, at least 2 - 3 books minimum. :sing:
comics style of a country rely / affected a lot by the culture...jap / american (ang moh) comic can easily differentiate coz they are fr totally diff background...further more their comic history already sooo many yrs....i think for sgp to build up our own style...it takes time loh....plus the comic reading culture here is not as hot as country like jap...we hv to go tru this phase first...HK comic used to be a banned material in HK too once....due to the violent and too many sex scene....but thats during tony wong era....now in sgp i think more and more ppl is getting involve in comic....but not all level of ppl....if our readers are like the ang moh or HKies or jap.....i'm sure by that time sgp comic oso got its own icon liao...or own style.... :hello:
I think "drawing skill" & "Creating & Telling story skill" is most important.
-- With good drawing skill & foundation, one can adapt to universal style and create solid drawings in the comic.
-- With good creating and telling story skill, and can create good story and present it to the readers in an interesting way.
For "STYLE" wise, my point of view is that, Style is something subjective. LIke it, you'll like it. Don't like it, no matter how, u won't like it. If we follow Hong Kong or America, limited our style to one, then we are like putting all the eggs in one basket. once the basket drop, all the egg will crack.
I think we should allow artists to develop multiple style, since we are a rojak society, we absort things from all places. If we develop into this direction well, it can be a very unique selling point for local comic. Yah. that is what I wanna say too. We are in lack of Unique Selling Point.
my 2 cents
hah...maybe the rojak style will be our unique style to the whole comic world  :hello:

Besides style, i guess funding, passion and commitment are the next most important thing.Unfortunately, Spore does not provide a good environment for comics line, not to talk about a comics industry in spore.Sad to say but i will definitely support local production :salute:

Even comics from other countries must be high standard before locals will support them, so it can also be a lack of support. If people don't eye too much on standards and are willing to support local production, like the previous Mr Kiasu, than at least there could be more motivation.

....i think the word is being 'Versatile'.... in style and to do that...u must have a strong foundation in your basic skill... :)
...ofcos...to make a comic bk sell...first...your drawing style must be appealing to the readers... the cover design is the frontline of the marketing of your bk... a attractive cover design will certainly helps to attract the consumer's attention. :)
...however...wat will make the consumer buy the product depends on wat are u actually selling... in comic case...the theme of your work... the selling point of your work... :)
... if your selling point is really strong to make consumers dig their pocket and buy your product....then how to make them continue their support for u will depend on wat kind of contents u have inside your product....
...in comic case... the story plot, your drawing style etc... :)
....presently right now...sg local comic artist...in my opinion stil bear the 'to draw watever they wanna draw' mindset.... which flankly unless your drawing style and story plot is damn powerful...orelse... its good luck to them if they wanna get publishers to invest in their work...
....i always recommend the practical approach....think business then think art if u wanna venture or make it out into the local comic market... we are different from HK, Japan, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Korea...interms of market environment, comic culture, business mentaility etc... thus, inorder to be successful... one cannot 随心所欲....
.... :drum: :sing: :supz:
uncle wing's point is definately true!!

In SG, everyting you do must be linked to commercial, if not its really hard to carry on with things.
