Saw in Chinese papers, fukan, today an article about building a popculture in sg, mainly on pop songs and singers. I thought most of what it says applies to building a vibrant comic popculture here too.
what do u guys think? What can be done to promote local comic scene? Gov? Sch? policy? media? activities?

I read that too, but like what those interviewed hope for, somebody should take the 1st step, and usually poeple will point towards the govt.
Actually the point about govt controlling things have already been loosened up alot over the years, just that most of us still have the concept of being pulled by them. It is just an excuse by people for not wanting to move and start doing things.
I think main issue is that nobody up there says you can't do this, (think SM Goh said before) so in actual fact, you can. But problem arises when the message is passed down, the various govt bodies will say NO to things, as the people running them have already instilled a fixed mindset on how things should be proceeded in SG.
I would look forward to a comic popculture, but a comics artist doesn't come by chance, they require years of learning and flare for it. I think one reason why many local artists did not take up this as their FT job is because of money, cant earn much. Govt may not be able to do much here, and some schools may resent comics. I would think more media and comics activities can help to promote, cultivate and give motivation to the rare number of artists here.
How long have zaobao fukan not cover comics? The most recent ones are those on Anime, since it is the next hotcake. Probably more coverage on comic interviews, introductions, the local comic shops, overview etc etc....one article bi-weekly would be good. People may start to notice and stop thinking about the negative side of comics.

....mmm...so far...in the market....the only horror artist who i really like is 伊藤润一... the jap artist who drew 旋涡... :)
....horror comic is kinda difficult to draw... becos one must be able to deliver the 'feel'... and to do that... not juz on the drawing styles and techniques alone, but also the story concept and plot.... :red:
....horror genre...its a theme thats widely accepted by all ages and sexes... its theme that never die or get faded... unless the market is spolit by lousy production of horror work lah... but luckily these few years... we have good productions not juz comic but from Movies, dramas etc....
... horror genre certainly has its market protential there and also...its less competitive....we have alot of horror writers who came out horror novels...but comic...the market its still young...and untapped yet....
....Hades, wolf thanks for the support.... :supz:

For movies its easy, they just have to make someone scream until your hair stand and when you leave the cinema, your critics will be "wah...good ah, so scary..". But for comics, without the sound effects, really a tough road. Good luck Joe for attacking the hard nut :salute: at least to me its not simple :)

...thats the thing abt comic lah...only thru drawings and story plot to deliver the 'feel'...hahhaha...thanks for the encouragement....me will defintely Gambette..!!! :D
 :drum: :sing:  :supz:
for comic to deliver the same level of horror feel in the movie...its very very difficult...so hv to approach differently...no music...no action....only by drawing...the artists must be very solid to be able to deliver the horror feel....wingfee....jiayou jiayou :salute:

agree with u guys abt horror being difficult to represent on print than in media, bcos by nature it rely heavily on the senses, esply sight and sound. but well, there's always exception :) eg the ring started from a lousy novel (the author wrote it for a competition, i've read the translated original novel and it s**ks). The director made an excellent adaptation. :) so uncle wing's success may come when some director became inspired after reading and made a movie out of it. To think that even "the Maid" was bought by brad pitt's movie company, so got chance leh :D
otherwise, uncle wing can have cd together with book, play eerie music while reading the comic, not bad hor? :D (there was a time when i liked the Ring so much i bought the movie CD and play all day :P ) pity my wife who had to listen to my ghost stories ideas all day and night :D

this is an interesting idea   The reading time of the comics must follow the playing CD.
CD: Page 1.....
Reader: Flips to page 1 and read....than wait.....
CD: Page 2.....
Reader: Flips to page 2 and read....than wait.....
CD: Page 3.....
Reader: Flips to page 3
CD: Screams!!!!
Reader wife: Can you stop doing that!
Reader: Off CD, closes book..go to sleep....grumble....

....wah..piazn....like that the cost of the comic will go up....who will wanna invest...?..... :(
....hahhaha....since i decided to take up horror genre....i have been looking into ways to create the 'feel'...and its not juz thru drawings but also stoy plot, story flow... actually reading comics is the same as reading novels... :)
Stephen King was known as a horror master...he delivered his horror feel by words... i think its even more diffificult cos reader gotta read and imagine/visualised then feel 'horrify'.... :red: ....
....we have adam lee and a few successful horror writer in sg too.... flankly if they can deliver horror thru words.... then we can deliver horror thru drawings...only one thing that's common to both presentations of horror...and thats the story plot...the story's flow.... it's a important element thats must go together with the words and drawings....
.... we do have a hugh amt of horror fans in sg...regardless of whether its movie, novels, or comics....thus...the market is there for horror genre... how successful is your horror work depend also on how u gonna market it... :red:
...if your work is good...but u dun know how to sell it....the sale will be bad at least at the begining stage when u launch your work, it'll be very slow for the sale to move up....and the publisher with the artist might lost patience and confidence... :red: ..
....i work with publisher be4... i know it take average a year to finally decide whether is the bk sellable.... if after 3-4 mths the sale is still not picking up...usually publisher will not take the risk and invest on the second bk...
...thus....the first bk is very important...marketing strategy need to be devise first be4 u decide wat u wanna do...then...how u gona do it.... u can't draw wat u wanna draw.... :red:
...i think the above applys to all genre of comics...and even business or different industry.....not juz comics :)
...sorri nagging again....bad habit....hahhaha......but...i always find fun to express my views by writing essays...kekekke.... :D
