hi, new guy here :)

saw in other thread that most people here read HK comics? me too :)

also saw that u guys feel nothing is happening in local comic scene, agree totally. quite boring huh? Make people feel that sg no comics...

As such, i am working to hope to change that by organising a national comics and CL seminar for all pri and sec CL teachers in sg, hoping to intro manga into schools. I feel that if we can get teachers to encourage comics for the sake of learning CL, then there will be a sustained impact and prolong influence on batches after batches of students :) and hopefully in the long term get more parents and top gov people to view comic seriously.

more details at http://GarygComicStudio.com/seminar.htm

大家加油!

hope to hear what you guys feel abt this :)

Great ah Gary, didnt know that there is somebody to introduce comics to the schools, bcos usually they are against it :)

My personal feel, comics can really encourage the learning or Chinese, I used to be just normal, than keep improving over my sec sch time bcos of contact with comics and novels. my ex-collegue once asked me how her son can improve CL, since he got no interest, I say read comcis, but she just tought I am joking...its true ah :salute:

Many are already giving up HK comics, but I think you can still find alot of us reading here

hope to see you often and the works you are doing, definately good news :hello: :hello:

Yeah I totally agrees with Rookie. At least I gets A1 for my chinese language during my 'O' level :D

I've been reading comics since I was about 7-8 yrs old. We could just learnt 繁體字 and 簡體字 at the same time through reading them :read: When times goes by, u could actually knows how to read them. Quite amazing sometimes that some words are unfamiliar to me but I did knows how to read them

wow thanks for the great support :D really nice to hear some positive feedback, after banging some walls in carrying out the thing :D

Fire: CL means chinese language lor :O yup, i left teaching 3 yrs ago and started drawing :D (sounds kind of crazy huh? :D ) btw now am 32, but look older :( thanks for volunteering, but paiseh to ask u lah, i just join this forum u know :D

rookiyong and hades: would really like to know more abt how comics helped u all, so that i can quote your testimonies next time, if u're ok with it :D i myself didnt have any problem with CL from young (unlike kids now) bcos i start reading comics at young age too :D longfumun, xiaodingdang etc. i totally agree that reading HK comics help u recognise 繁体字, which sch doesnt teach, so sad hor.

actually there's another CL teacher comic artist, weng tian bao, u all might have heard of him :) For a start, we are introducing manga first, which is milder and easier to accept for sg parents, teachers etc. many still equate comic with violence, no wonder sg so uncreative la. we hope to introduce over 10 selected series to sch, ease their fears, give them ideas how to use these comics to teach essay writing etc. once they are comfortable, they'll adopt comics and more and more comics will be put in sch libraries, reading prog, comic activities etc :D

i am really happy that a minister is able to attend and put his stamp on it. Knowing sg, everything top down, it will give teachers a big big OK to use comics, therefore boosting local comic scene. right now i am trying to publicise this event, spread the word, hopefully to overseas even, so that people will hear whats happening in sg comic scene (rather than "sg got comics meh?"). you guys have any suggestions how i can do it? zaobao and MAGE magazine already ok to publicise.

Hi Gary,

me same case as Lonewolf....
We were classmat then & I remember one of our classmate bring the HK comic & nearly the whole class of boys share it....
all of us got no problem with CL :D

HK comic maybe too voilence, but Jap comic has lot of title & they are very informative as well...
I had switch to Jap comic now & the TW translation is good...
School children will be able to pick up interest of CL from comic :supz:

I'm now a father of a 4 yrs old girl & still reading comic... probably will introduce this interest to my daughter as well

I'll definitely support your work...

cheers

wow, thanks for all your replies, very encouraging leh :D

from all your replies, i think we hit a keypoint, CL doesnt seem a problem to those who read comics, esply if they start young. and wow, so many got A1 siah o.O" (B3 not bad also, esply nowsday when our students' standard of CL so low) But i had a students once who read comics too, but her chinese still poor leh, how? was it more bcos of constant contact with CL thru comics that helped, or chinese-speaking family backgrd?

wow, rookiyong, i am beginning to recall the good old days like yours too :D i used to go to a bkshop at bras basah level 1 to dig longfumen, it's still there, facing the road. the owners very stern-looking, but i will dig thru all the scattered issues and carry 2 big red plastic bag take bus home :P

fire: sounds like a special proj u have siah...tell me/ us abt it lah (garyg@garygcomicstudio.com). i think sg comic scene is a small place, we shld combine effort and aim for the sea, not swim in a puddle of water, or fight among ourselves in the small pond as i have observe in some previous cases :) the least i can do is maybe give you some contacts, if u need? :)

I think those titles are alright, give them something mild 1st, fighting comics is only for people like us who are posioned.

Best is to introduce them those with:
Values: SG kids are lacking on this
Good language: some comics really don't emphasize on text
Artwork: So that it can draw them to be interested
Healthy: Sports are definately good

I cant think of much already. :salute:

柯南and金田一may be suitable for sec students :) i'll put that down in 2nd batch, hope there is one. But then, detective stories have graphic depiction of murder, ie all sorts of methods of dying, so teachers might be afraid to recommend. But i think 2nd batch shld be alright.

i've seen 孙子攻略, looks very wordy to me, and heavy too, and HK comics always quite violent in their depiction, this one got heads chop off etc...initially i put it in, but took it out :) i think got to wait for teachers slowly accept 1st batch first. 三国志 is good, anything abt 3kingdoms is more or less safe, but chuangyi dont have i think, shld kind of recommend titles they have :) 火凤燎原 chuangyi have or not huh?

u're are free to recommend any titles anytime u come across k? i'm also trying very hard to find one-off title, bcos easier to market to schs, only found 铁拳小子外传 and 孙中山vol1 good.

HK comics really too off, they will kick the team out before anything is done.

孙子攻略 is good, but you are right, they may not take it as students cant understand too much about what it is trying to say. I think chuangyi re-issue 三国志 before, and since its a good title, guess it will be acceptable.

gary, you doing this on a school by school basis or an invitation of all schools to a place you organise? got chance that we can go also?

Just a quick few words. What Garyg is doing by introducing comics into schools is VITAL to keep the future industry alive. In the UK those under 35 years of age have no idea of British comics in the past as the old comics for pre-school to 14 years old kids stopped. The industry is now virtually dead. The US is also finding its readers to be 35+.
Encouraging kids to read comics from an early age gives you a future comic fan/buyer base -it also helps kids or even illiterate adults to learn to read.
Well done Garyg!

Totally agreed, 1st of all, thats how s'pore is built over the pass 40years. Our local arts scene standard is still far away from countries with deep culture. Comics is an art but we must commercialise it 1st before we can even talk about what we wish to draw :| keep it up!!!!!!!!!!!

I disagree to certain point in a kids growing up to being a teenager then to adults like us. Kids (depending on age say below 10) should be reading comics of non-violence and definitely not LHM, etc. When they reach teens then they should go for more expressive romance, and those understanding of trust, disciplinery, and fact of life kind of comics...of coz we can put some good violence in them to help them understand the need to protect themselves and their interest when they face one in their teens life. At later stage when they are adults...then I can say we begin the read and collect what we have miss out in the real world of true comics of all kinds...since we as adults knows how to control and make decisions of what is the right thing to do. Anyway I started reading Lao fu Zhi when i was a boi...then move up to Marvels heros (spidy) in teens....on now at 39 then I read LFM even when I already know is bad for me to read when I was 12 yrs old....well i did take a peep once. :)

...i think abt encouraging kids to pick up comic reading....mmm...actually we should put it in another way.... 'encouraging parents to let their kids pick up comic reading...'...

...kids or teenage regardless of age are exposed to comics any where... nowadays popular comic series can be found in library...i came across a boy may be around 11yrs old or primary 5-6 level...paid $2 and sit inside a comic shop reading comic of violence genre....

...thus comic reading is becoming a hobby for alot of kids nowadays and they dun have to actually buy it to read.... :red:

...i think wat grayg doin is to encourage the parents and schools to let the kids to pick up comic reading... they are the ppl who disclipine the kids, controlling the buying power... and authorise wat the kid should read or shouldn't read....

...thus if the parents and school authority can loosen their grip a bit and let comic reading grows... we'll have a another big group of target comsumers for our comic market and thats is certainly good news for local comic scene... :)

...Gambette desu grayg san... :supz:

yes that I agree...but firstly I guess if the parents totally do not appreciate comics then I think this kid/teens will only find their own way from frens influence and that can be bad at the wrong end esp for comics that is too violence. So Gary's community/schools/institution could be the only good problem that quide kids to appreciate comics in the right mandate with careful selections according to age group. :salute:

I think Sky's method may work for our generation, but for the current batch, they basically can get whatever they want and even parents lose control over them, much less on what they read.

Gary's approach may be two-fold. One is that it will get more and more people to read comics, thus building up the industry. Once you get people to change their misconception over "comics are for bad kids", than you are one step up. Another reason, Gary is a Chinese teacher before, so he will know all the problems faced on getting them to be interested in Chinese. By using Chinese Comics as a springboard, it may inject some blood and generate interest in Chinese & Reading, which may cultivate a good habit. I accept this option rather than "you have to learn Chinese so that next time can work in China". :bang: anyway just my thoughts of the events...

In fact I tried this before, talked to my colleague whose son is not interested in Chinese, but probably they don't think it will help :) I believe we all go through the process of flipping dictionary for words when 1st starting to read comic right? actually quite fun what   maybe now they lose that kind of touch already, have computer and PDA's.

When someone in this forum mentioned about borrowing Western comics from the Library, I was so surprised that I went to verify. Even our government is not against it, so it now goes to how parents think. I always tell people, its better to have your kid at home, reading comics, playing computer games, even watch TV.....better than going out to mix with who you also don't know right?

Terry, does UK also have a history on comics? Any samples to see?

Joe, you from asiapac ah? Actually I got a favour to ask, dropped than a email but no replies....we are thinking of introducing educational comics here, but needs permission..can help? :D if ok, I can PM you some details.

thank you all for the encouragements for the seminar, really appreciate it :) special thanks to alvin who helped a lot on the day (BTW congrats on your ROM).

thanks terry, i'm just doing what i can and like to do. i think comics can help local students learn CL and CL can promote comics :) its a bit sad when we see local comic grps are not cooperating despite the "poor" state sg comic is in, so we try to pull resources and network to build things up :) we should look at big pic and put aside our petty prejudices i think. only when there's an industry, then can everybody win :) (oops, going into my teacher-nagging mode :P)

agree with joe abt 'encouraging parents to let their kids pick up comic reading...' many times it's the adults we have to convinice to let them not only to allow kids to read comics, but actually ENCOURAGE kids to do so. there's still a lot of work to do.

rookiyong i stand with u against "you have to learn Chinese so that next time can work in China". it is one of the many reasons to learn CL but overly emphasised. I'm esply against the term "CL elite" etc. like u said, reading comics cultivate a habit of reading which opens the way for constant contact with CL, otherwise nowsaday what else is our kids reading?
